  • Fixing my GM Passlock Problem Once and For All (2004 Chevrolet Impala)
The PassLock system was designed to prevent vehicle theft by disabling fuel to the engine if attempts are made to start the vehicle without the correct bitted key. PASSLock increased the level of security while retaining the ease of service and costs offered by standard ignition lock systems. Unlike the General Motors PASSKey I/II, VATS, PASSKey III, or keyless, the security of the PassLock system is built into the lock and is not dependent on a specialized key or separate device.
No programming is required for the PASSLock-equipped vehicle to accept additional keys. Any key blank with the proper profile cut to the correct depths can be used to operate the ignition lock.
For the 1995-1/2 model year, General Motors introduced PASSLock, the first ignition lock equipped with a magnet mounted into the ignition lock cylinder and a corresponding Hall-effect sensor mounted into the housing assembly. When the correctly cut key is inserted into the lock cylinder and rotated, the magnet registers on the sensor’s three switch points. The sensor electronically signals the vehicle’s on-board computer, and the fuel supply remains on if the electronic value matches the code stored in the computer.
If the values do not match, the fuel supply is shut off. After three consecutive failed attempts, PASSLock will enter Long Tamper Mode, disabling the engine for 10 minutes while the Theft System indicator on the instrument panel flashes.
The PASSLock system is designed such that forced rotation normally damages the electronics, immobilizing the vehicle. According to General Motors, should the ignition lock be force rotated, the lock must be replaced in order to operate the vehicle.
Note: The theft deterrent function of the PASSLock System locks out the fuel injectors after the engine is started. However, before a tamper mode engages, the car may run for a few seconds. The engine will then stall.
Depending upon the year and the model, replacing the ignition lock can result in the need to disassemble the dashboard. Early vehicles equipped with the modular PASSLock ignition locks had a long wire that went from the ignition switch to a connector behind the instrument panel. The modular in-dash ignition locks and the CSS ignition lock cylinders do not have wiring that must be plugged in.
When replacing a PASSLock ignition lock, there is a one in 10 chance the Hall effect sensor is the same value as the lock being replaced. Replacement locks do not have an identified sensor value. When the starter is engaged for the first time and the engine starts but stalls, the instrument panel security light will flash, indicating the vehicle is in the secure mode (it will not start) and must be programmed to accept the new lock.
Note: To avoid programming when the ignition lock needs to be replaced, use the housing of the ignition lock, which contains the Hall-effect switch. Replace only the plug. The Hall-effect switch determines the magnetic value.
To reprogram PASSLock I ignition lock:
Step 1. After replacing the lock, try to start the vehicle with a correctly cut key. There is a one in 10 chance that the car will start.
Step 2. If the new lock does not match the electronic value in the vehicle’s computer, an indicator light on the instrument panel will begin flashing and the car will be disabled.
Step 3. Leave ignition in the ON or RUN position.
Step 4. After approximately 10 minutes, the light will stop flashing and remain ON. The onboard computer has then been programmed to accept the new lock’s signal. The car can be started.
If the indicator light turns off, the vehicle is probably equipped with a PASSLock II system. Continue with the following programming procedure.
Occasionally, a PASSLock-equipped vehicle will have problems starting. The following information can help to determine the cause of the problem.
The PASSLock system does not disable the starter; it only disables the fuel after the engine has started. If the vehicle will not crank, PASSLock cannot cause this condition. If the vehicle starts, but stalls quickly, this condition can possibly be related to PASSLock.
Most PASSLock-equipped vehicles have a telltale indicator in the instrument panel. When a PASSLock-equipped vehicle is being started, the instrument panel warning light for PASSLock remains on until the engine starts. For this reason a “No Start” condition should not be confused with PASSLock System fault.

There's nothing rare about these new cars they're all dumpster fires. Look at the s***** engineering that goes into them they even lock the owners out from starting them up that should be a recall in the lawsuit against General Motors. Go online and Google this problem the endless pages of complaints and problems with this exact system and issue. This isn't brake pads on an alternator this is something that could walk you out from starting when your life is on the line, it's planned obsolescence or if stupidity of engineering. Either way GM has to recall every one of his vehicles and make it right with a re-engineered system or just delete the system altogether.

Thank you, Randomland ! Working great so far. I did one thing differently. I added a one foot length of yellow wire & a one foot length of black wire to the yellow & black wires that go to BCM. So i can connect the yellow to the black wire together, below the dash. Where it's easier to work on. Plus, if i find the right transistor to use . I can try one without taking dash apart .
    Thanks again ! 🙂

Thanks for the video im gonna try this. I was iffy about putting in a resistor. I bought some but id rather do what you did. I seen this work as well on tahoes and suburbans.
I got stranded at a gas pump i usually just use my car to get my kid from school or for groceries. But when im somewhere like a gas pump or i need the car to get somewhere important it will act up. I tried starting it by jumping the starter solenoid but the fuel was cut. It would prime and run for second or 2. I would grab the throttle to try and keep going but no dice.
The most shitty problem on my car i love the car its big gets good mileage but passlock shoulda been recalled 30 years ag

I cut all three wires, the yellow, the white and the black. installed a 2200 ohm resistor, between, the yellow and the black wire. Then erase the security codes off the body control module to do a relearn of security system. Now do the 10 minute relearn procedure three times (when doing the relearn procedure the starter does not crank the engine) When doing the relearn procedure, the security light will flash OFF and ON for about 10 minutes then it stays ON. Then you turn the key OFF wait five seconds, turn the key to CRANK and back to ON do that three times. When the key is cycle three times the fourth time the starter will turn engine over and will start and run and the security light will go out. All doors have to be shut to relearn the security system.

My understanding of this is that all you really have to do is cut the yellow wire. make sure that you insulate the cut areas with tape or something to avoid a short.

I cut the yellow and black and connected them together on the BCM side, now the engine won't crank. Is this because I need to still do the relearn or is this another problem? I resorted to cutting the wires because I was unable to do the relearn after replacing the ignition switch despite trying for 3 hours.

Okay you have the yellow and black...
After you rewire the yellow and black together the only wire left to the cylinder that should be connected near the computer is the white one uncut correct it should then bypass .... Shutting the anti-system down telling that when you get done relearning it's okay to start the engine..
So essentially the only wires connected to that new cylinder and its housing of those three wires is the white one, correct...
Now I kept the door closed but my battery light along with the security system light keep flashing during the learning process even though I have did the bypass

The service manual says you have to do the relearn 3 times, 10 minutes each. You turn the ignition on, try to start the car, if no start, leave the key on for 10 minutes or until the security light goes out. Then turn off ignition for 5 seconds, turn on and try to start the car. No start, leave the ignition on for another 10 minutes or until security light goes out. Turn off for 5 seconds, try to start. Leave key on. Repeat this one more time, leaving in for 10 minutes or until the light is out, turning off for 5 seconds. After 3 cycles of this, on the fourth try to start, the bcm should have relearned the code, and engine should start. If not, repeat the procedure for 3 cycles. I'd do it how he said, with door shut and lean in to turn the key
