      I am not sure Lord Acton would disagree with your statement, though I would think what he means to convey is that power tends to bring the worst out of people. This is, in my opinion, regardless of whether or not said "corruption" springs from nature or nurture. Thank you for taking the time to watch, and even respond; I hope the video was enjoyable!

    are there stages of education for philosopher kings?

    • @LetsTalkPhilosophy
      @LetsTalkPhilosophy  Před 3 lety +3

      Let me see if I can remember what Plato said in The Republic about the education of a philosopher king. First he/she (I say she as well, even though it is stated as king, because there are not barriers of sex in his Utopia) is to start with 10 years of physical education mixed with music (this starts from the age of 10 I believe). At the age of 20 there shall be a great elimination wherein some are weeded out with a test of sorts). Following this 10 more years of education shall be given, then at the age of 30 the second, more vigorous test, or great elimination shall be administered). Those who are left after these 2 eliminations shall begin to study philosophy for 5 years. At the age of 35 those who have proven themselves will now be sent into the world to study from the book of life itself for 15 years. Finally at the age of 50, for those who have proven themselves, they will automatically be given the title guardian of the state (or philosopher king/kings). Hope this rough rendition helps a bit haha.

      @@LetsTalkPhilosophy I was young too when he passed. They did a swear campaign against him implying he was raciest since he was against civil right provisions, but he was against the provisions because he wanted everyone to be equal under the law and was against groups of people having their own law sets. We can see this issue today when it comes to hate crimes and other areas, such as college.

      I suppose one could define philosopher king in whichever way they prefer. But to answer your question I am quite certain that he does not come remotely close to the Platonic Philosopher King. He would be more akin to Caligula, or perhaps Tiberius.

    • @Killgore-ip2yq
      @Killgore-ip2yq Před 2 lety

      No.
      Ideology is not Philosophy.
      Philosophy is understanding truths of the world, Nazism is reaffirming beliefs of the state, usually by force.
      Considering that Plato mentor Socrates was executed by the state for his beliefs, Plato would likely hate Hitler for his abuse of power.
