  • Change the brakes on your E-Bike by yourself. Brake pads are a wearable item and stopping power is essential. Pads are inexpensive and it's really easy to change them out. Here is the link to the pads I used here, the Semi-Metallic. amzn.to/2KIqFzY The bike is a Juiced Bikes RipCurrent S, Fat Tire electric bike.

      UPDATE: changed the brake pads. Not too difficult. However, i get a nasty grinding sound when I brake. And the the brakes see to stick, which caused me to change the pads on the first place. What do you think could be causing this and what should I do to try and fix it? Thanks in advance

    • @evolutionaryTom

      @@dv64villa The composition of the pads might be the issue. I initially changed mine for the same reason. Some have to be bedded in and take some time. Check out this article. www.merlincycles.com/blog/buyers-guide-to-disc-brake-pads/

      @@evolutionaryTom thanks for the link to that article. I'm getting my education on brake pads. Lol. The brake pads that I got are the semi-metallic ones, which according to the article, are supposed to be the quieter ones. Are there any other adjustments I need to be making like tightening the caliper bolts or loosening something else that I may be missing?

  • @donmack3059
    @donmack3059 Před 3 lety +6

    Thanks for the concise video, Tom. Initially my RCS brakes were quiet. I followed someone's online bedding-in procedure -- which turned out to be ALL WRONG -- and my quiet world turned into a horrible grinding noise. So, I ordered new resin pads from Amazon, watched your video, and spent a whole 10 minutes changing out the stock pads. I put the bike on the stand, removed the calipers (instead of removing the wheels), popped out the screw (mine has a screw retainer instead of the cotter pin), and replaced the pads (I just used the old spring pad retainer because it was already bent to fit and was only a month old.) Tomorrow I'll follow the CORRECT bedding-in procedure and see if my quiet world will return.

      @evolutionaryTom  Před 3 lety

      Thank you for the nice comment, Don. Please let me know if you get back to disc brake utopia! Did you get the same pads as I have in the video or different ones? If different, would you share which ones? Sorry for all the homework. -Tom

    • @donmack3059
      @donmack3059 Před 3 lety

      Tom, these are the pads I bought:
      smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07Z3KBMYT?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title
      I spent about 15 minutes bedding-in the new pads, following the procedure recommended by Park Tool. The front brake sounded like a sick goose from the first, and continued throughout the process. The rear was pretty quiet. After cooling down, they were both quieter during mild-to-moderate braking pressure.
      After a few rides, I’ll report back on the results.

    • @mikeemery9947
      @mikeemery9947 Před 3 lety +1

      Wow, this sounds exactly like I'm running into! I also did a brake bedding procedure and now my front brake is making a god awful sound. Can I ask what the faulty bedding procedure is (vs. the correct one)? And guess I also need to do a brake replace, but now wondering which pads I should go with. Just received my RCS about a month ago.

    • @donmack3059
      @donmack3059 Před 3 lety

      Michael Emery, I erroneously thought that to bed-in the brakes meant to do a series of hard braking stops. Wrong.
      I watched several videos that showed how to properly bed-in the brakes - get up some speed, then slowly apply the bray(one at a time) to build up heat and, thus, transfer brake pad material to the discs. It takes some time, irritating your neighbors in the process. 😉
      Now, after several miles, it’s better. Hard braking still results in noise, but routine braking is mostly silent. Still not sure that I did it right, but it’s better.
      Hope that helps. Search the CZcams archives for the procedure.

      I think 500 to 1000 miles seems to be what people are getting on their brake pads. It all depends on the terrain. It's very flat where I live. I should get more life out of mine than someone in San Francisco would, etc. Good thing is that pads are relatively inexpensive. Hope that helps, Sammy. -Tom

  • @steightofthehart7899
    @steightofthehart7899 Před 3 lety +2

    thanks for sharing Tom - my ebike is a Scott and new pads can only be inserted in the opposite direction to the way you show - anyone replacing pads for the first time needs to know that not all brake pads are the same, so take an old one to the shop to get the right pads and make sure to get the retaining spring too - you need to fit the spring between the two new pads as you fit them carefully into the brake caliper and you might need to lever apart each of the brake cups with a piece of wood to make enough space to slide the pads and spring into - the original cotter pins can be reused many times

    • @evolutionaryTom
      @evolutionaryTom  Před 3 lety +1

      @@evolutionaryTom The front pads have been dead quiet from the moment I installed them, but the rear was super squealy from the git-go. I immediately removed them then reinstalled using the original separator/spring from the OEM kevlar pads, and they've been dead quiet ever since. I guess the replacement spring just didn't hold the pad properly or maybe tight enough. And who knows, it may have quieted down after break-in, but it was so loud it would have been so annoying. Anyway, the ceramic pads stop with amazing confidence and no fade, and I've made at least 3 real hard stops since the install.

    Thanks for the Video Tom. I have 196 miles on my RCS bought new in Dec 2020 and just recently got the grinding, rough braking sound and feel. I'm wondering if I burned through the pads so quickly (all pretty easy road miles so far). I thought I'd do a search on your channel first and then inspect the pads to see if they were worn or the rotors were somehow damaged. I'm happy to see the replacement and inspection job is not that tough to do. It sounds like the pads may have changed from 2018 to 2020, any suggestion on a definitive source for the Pads on a 2020 model? Do you think I can keep using the rough sounding and feeling pads and they will wear through this sticky spot or do I risk damaging the rotors if I keep using these? Is the use of sand paper to do the same thing as continuing to just use the brakes with their noise and vibration, grinding off a rough patch of brake pad? Do you know what grit sand paper to use? What is the recommended break in procedure for the new brakes? Thanks again Tom!

      Tim, I apologize for missing your post. Just saw it as someone left a comment and I received an alert. My sincere apologies. As for the pads, I would just replace them. They are inexpensive and I wouldn't waste my time with the sandpaper. I can't help on the 2020 model but If you go to one of the JB RCS groups on Facebook, you'll find a definitive answer. I try to wear in a new pair of pads just like they do on cars, with a few sudden stops from a good speed. That's about all I know. Actually, I'm just getting ready to put another set on my RCS. -Tom

    Why are we putting up with breaks so tiny ? They don't have nearly enough stopping power for people of average to heavy IMO. and wear out so fast that it cost a lot of money and time. I believe many people are dying because the industry is obsessed with miniature size breaks ! We need scooter, motor cycle size brakes on bicycles ! Especially for street bikes . An extra pound of break hardware doesn't matter unless you doing specialized racing.

Even as a guy who has to carry sh*t tons of heavy books and notebooks to school (since we used them daily) I have to use a lot more bike power to get to school on time and brakes to stop at an oncoming intersection after school. And truly, I do question why they are small and why they couldn't be similar to a regular caliper on a car.

    But that is not all that is involved. Both brakes need to be adjusted. Note that only one side moves when the brake is applied. The other "fixed" side is adjustable in and out for wear. If only the moving side is adjusted at the handlebar or cable, the brake disc will eventually come into contact with the caliper housing rather than the pad reducing braking by 50%. So.... adjust the fixed side in first, then loosen the slotted caliper to frame bolts, apply the brake, then tighten the same bolts. This will centralize the caliper on the disc. Lastly, adjust the moving calipers by shortening the cable after closing up the adjustment on the handlebar. Note that it is not necessary to remove the wheels to do this adjustment. Simply remove the two caliper to frame bolts. Much simpler!
