    The most heartbreaking thing is the fact that he's not singing about memories and rubbish dreams that he had with his father; he's singing about the ones he wished he had, and never will have. He must have missed him so much...

    Buckley spent six years working in a hotel and playing guitar in various struggling bands playing in styles from jazz, reggae, and roots rock to heavy metal... He made his public singing debut at a tribute concert for his father called "Greetings from Tim Buckley." Buckley rejected the idea of the concert as a springboard to his career, instead citing personal reasons regarding his decision to sing at the tribute. Buckley performed "I Never Asked To Be Your Mountain", a song Tim Buckley wrote about an infant Jeff Buckley and his mother... he concluded the concert with "Once I Was" performed acoustically with an impromptu a capella ending, due to a snapped guitar string. Buckley's performance at the concert was counter-intuitive to his desire to distance himself musically from his father. Buckley later explained his reasoning: "It wasn't my work, it wasn't my life. But it bothered me that I hadn't been to his funeral, that I'd never been able to tell him anything. I used that show to pay my last respects." The concert proved to be his first step into the music industry that had eluded him for years

    it's so strange to think that this song was written by Tim Buckley because this is the song that catapult Jeff into his career and lyrically, at least in the end, it's almost as if Jeff wrote this about his father. "Do you remember me?"...it's haunting the brokenness Jeff projects and the coincidentally fitting words that he sings.

      @soysaucehairdye7869 Před 9 lety +2

      Yeah to be fair though Jeff Buckley's mom had every bit as much to do with his voice as well. Tim Buckley was more or less a spinto tenor with a huge range while Jeff Buckley was a leggiero tenor with a higher voice than his father although his father could sing the same high notes as Jeff, but at a heavier timbre.

If that weren't dramatic enough, his voice spiralled up on the last word -'me'- like a thin plume of smoke, holding on for a moment before drifting up to the ceiling. He took a quick bow, said, 'Thanks,' and trotted offstage, and the concert ended. It would not have been a more perfect finale if he had planned it."-DreamBrother

    the two sayings are essentially the same. taste refers to a person's taste of music or "liking" of certain things, so basically an opinion.

    He was a coward. What man isn't afraid of the responsibility of raising a child? It seems he was more interested in his career, then to sacrifice his dreams and be a dad.

    No, that's not even remotely in the vicinity of being true. Look around... YOU are the minority here. I am clearly not the only one who loves this. You seem to be the only one who doesn't. Jeff's performance at his dad's tribute concert was what launched his professional career. So apparently even the "important" people who know amazing talent when they see it were blown away by him. He played this as a tribute to his late father. He wasn't trying to cover it and make it his own.

    A lot of people liked Michael Jackson too, so what. You have your opinion, I have mine. Yet again I'm listening to it as I type and find nothing to change my opinion. He sings flat and can't carry a tune in a bucket. Remember me, lord I'll try to forget it. Nuff said.

      lol obviously the song is interpreted differently. but for me jeff's version is more touching, because while tim's was dedicated to his wife. Jeff's was to a father he never spent time with. which makes the shaky voice, and imperfections vocally speaking more touching
