How Civet make World Most Expensive Coffee - Civet Coffee Farming - Coffee Harvest and Processing

  • Kopi luwak is a coffee that consists of partially digested coffee cherries, which have been eaten and defecated by the Asian palm civet . It is also called civet coffee. The cherries are fermented as they pass through a civet's intestines, and after being defecated with other fecal matter, they are collected. Producers of the coffee beans argue that the process may improve coffee through two mechanisms: selection - civets choosing to eat only certain cherries, and digestion - biological or chemical mechanisms in the animals' digestive tracts altering the composition of the coffee cherries.
    The traditional method of collecting feces from wild Asian palm civets has given way to an intensive farming method, in which the palm civets are kept in battery cages and are force-fed the cherries. This method of production has raised ethical concerns about the treatment of civets and the conditions they are made to live in, which include isolation, poor diet, small cages, and a high mortality rate.
    Although kopi luwak is a form of processing rather than a variety of coffee, it has been called one of the most expensive coffees in the world, with retail prices reaching US$100 per kilogram for farmed beans and US$1,300 per kilogram for wild-collected beans.

Stress can affect the quality of the product so if you want your coffee to be really good quality don't put the civets inside a small cage but let them be free and happy to roam around and eat coffee fruits as much as they want

      If you have a chance to visit Indonesia, you'll find out they're not too expensive to obtain, with some bargaining, you may get about $18/lb (about 30% civet coffee, which is pretty good for that price), and they use the beans from the kind they feed the animal with.
      You can already smell the difference between the bag with and without blending civet coffee.

    • @rossstrickland1722
      @rossstrickland1722 Před 9 měsíci

      This is the definition of mistreatment, it is a wild animal that is held in a much smaller enclosure while being incredibly malnourished. Civets regularly lose their fur to the stress and lack of nutrition. Its an animal whose natural instict is to climb and they are leaving them in filthy boxes. They frequently develop a neurosis from these conditions. In addition there is very little oversight so buying a 100% wild certified product is bs because they pretty much all cage them and lie

    What does the Civet cat do in the wild? I saw them grouped together on a coffee tree. Then at about the 4m mark we see a different farm(?) with an adult animal doing circles up and down the inside of a small slat box!! That kind of activity, like a domestic cat chasing it's tail endlessly, is neurotic behavior induced by stress! My heart is broken to see the way these animals are "farmed".
