Join me as I go over the different enlisted rates (jobs) in the Coast Guard in a 3 part series. Special guests fellow Coastie F-ET Petty Officer Paul Stafford and the one the only Jtsuits.
Chris, like your show, just need to elaborate more about BM's. BM is the only enlisted rate were you can be a commanding officer on a cutter and or a station(every small boat station). One of the most important job that a BM performs(if he/she has the opportunity) is to be SAR boat coxswain, especially at a heavy weather SAR station. Taking a motorlife boat through crashing 15' waves, at night with 35' knot winds, over the bar, to save a fishing trawler(& crew) taking on water, what a rush. Possibly the most satisfying and compete experience one could have in the CG. Aloha, from a CG vet. BM2, 76-80, CG Station Oregon Inlet. Semper Paratus....
I was in the Coast Guard from 72 to 76. I was an ET at that time. My last billet was at Humboldt Bay SAR before the Group moved in and the Aviation Group. I was responsible for all cutters and mlbs in the area. If that wasn't enough, I also was one of the few that were volunteered for Drug Enforcement by the DEA. At that time, Humboldt County was the largest producer of weed. While at the SAR, I also went out on the 44s as a rescue diver with no special training and I controlled the RDFs. We didn't get the ERDFs until my last month. Most equipment, other than our Trident Radios were 20-30 years old. Constant upkeep. I went to ET and Loran C school in New York at Governors Island. I am glad to see that the USCG is getting the credit and equipment needed to do the multi-faceted and complex jobs assigned to them "We have to go out, But we don't have to come back". Semper Peratus, God Bless

Thanks for the info. Im not doing that non-rate shit, nice MEPS lets me thru I want to do OS, they give a fat bonus and I got a 70 on my ASVAB test so I qualify for it.
Patrick Johnson Congrats man. Good luck and God speed. MK is a hard working rate but they get a lot of respect and a lot of Law Enforcement opportunities if you desire
Coast Guard Chris yeah, I would have never considered it, but I ran into a cousin I didn't know I had until my grandma's funeral, I toured his boat and shadowed him on his 87 for a day and seemed like the fit for me, thanks man

Blossomet Go for it and do your own research- be careful as some information is outdated. But once you have a good idea, talk to a recruiter. I'm going to boot camp on July 9th. Good luck!
@@CoastGuardChris Any tips for a kid going through boot camp? I'm extremely motivated, very fit, and eager to start my career. But I have to make it through basic first 😬
Yeah I know... But are they at sea as long? or are do they go on shifts? Example: Lets say you are to be stationed in San Fran , are you going to be on The boat all day everyday ?
sandrae gunter Typically CG ships and crew are out to sea 3 to 5 months and come back to dock for as long as they were out. This goes on the whole time you're attached to a ship. I was on a ship for three 1/2 years and was out at sea for half that time in 3 month increments. Navy you can be gone 6 to 9 months, sometimes even longer from what Ive heard. When the ships are in port then the crew works on the ship until whats called trop hours, meaning you're done around 1pm and can go home for the day.
@@CoastGuardChris Who goes out more than 3 months other than Ice Breakers? Longest out for me was 3 month patrol, but had one where we were underway 58 days straight (1991 during Desert Storm) But when we hit ports breaks we hit 3 back to back before going back on patrol. Ship was based out of Alameda CA, Stopped in Panama on the 58th day, Off loaded our Helo by crane, since it was broken(Crashed on Deck). Then went through the Canal and went to Gitmo, Jamaica, and Aruba, the back through the Canal and back on Patrol.
I got a question I might get married to someone in my future but my question is if I'm in the military can I get married while in service I know some people is married in the military but I was wondering if you have to do something or can you do that while in service?
Short answer is yes it is hard to become a PA in the CG. It's one of the smaller rates in the CG, as a result the A school wait list is pretty long so if you don't mind being a non-rate for a few years then go for it.
Chris can you tell me what I should expect regarding obtaining job for the CG? My recruiter told me everyone goes in as a non rate and then puts in for A School after 6 months. I saw another video where you and JT said some jobs you have to get right out of MEPS. Will my recruiter tell me what jobs I can apply for before I go? I'm confused on this as my recruiter is not very communicative. Thanks man.
Zatch SMP Hey man. It's been my experience that there are always a few guaranteed A schools "jobs" you can sign up for and therefore never have to be a non rate. FS or cook A school is almost always an option. Now that being said guaranteed A school is always dependent by the needs of the CG. He could be telling the truth. However, some recruiters are shady and will lie to people so they could fill their quotas. If I were you I would call out to talk to a different recruiter and see if what he/ she says matches what your current recruiter is telling you.
So if I am in the Navy, get a coxswain pin but then I want to join the Coast Guard later...I have heard that a Boatswain mate in the Coast Guard would be the closest equivalent to a Navy Sailor who is in a Riverine command with a coxswain pin. Is this true ? Also, does the Coast Guard hire civilians to be coxswains on their boats as contractors?
Yes to the first question and no to the second. Depending on the port we pull into I believe they'll bring on a contractor who is familiar with navigating the port to verbally help whom ever is driving the ship but that's usually for very specific places. No civilian has ever been hired as a coxswain on a CG vessel to my knowledge.
CSG So if I leave the Navy when my PRD is up, and want to join the Coast Guard with my coxswain training from the Navy would a Coast Guard recruiter be able to help me transfer my skills to an equivalent job and even paygrade ?
@@whosthat6837 The short answer is yes. However, it really depends on what kind of recruiter you get. Since the Coast Guard is a smaller branch their quotas are much smaller so depending on the needs of the CG you might get a recruiter that is not as motivated. For prior service they should try and match you with a similar rate but only one way to know for sure and that's to contact your closest CG recruiting station and set up an appointment. Good luck.
Hey I'm joining the coast guard and I am going ET. Do all ET's have to go to Petaluma for A School because my recruiter told me I would be in VA for it but everywhere else it seems like it's saying it's only in CA.
Patty Buckets Yes the primary A school is in California. C schools which are extended training are in Virginia but you only get training there only after A school in California
