Why Are My Balloon Eyes SOOO Big?- Warning: Math Ahead! (Balloon Vlog #17)

- How often does this happen to you? You make a balloon animal and just need to add the eyes. You take your white round and inflate it to double the size you want for one of the eyes. But when you twist the balloon in half, the eyes are not half the size of the original like you think they should be - they are way bigger! How is half not half? Here is the math that shows you why this happens, and how much you should actually blow up your balloons to get the correct sized eyes.

That was a succinct way to explain the outcome of making balloon eyes. I was able to follow along.
You are awesome, you have no idea how much you've helped me and I promise you that as soon as I start making money out of my balloon twisting I will give some back to you !
+Balloon Trickster Wow, thanks!
Thank you Mr. Boma! It is so refreshing to not have a dumbed down answer! I've learned from experience to start out with a smaller amount of air in my 5" round, but I never really knew why before. In fact I made a Flounder from your tutorial and it turned out great except for my eyes where a bit too big. Now I know why!
+Tony Hendren I had the same problem when I started out.
Tony Hendren I had the same thing happen. nobody realized it, but me. Flounder was awesome though. I made it for my granddaughter's first birthday. I also made Nemo. Mr. Boma that was one of the most important balloons I ever made in my life. At least it felt it. I made it for a baby's funeral. It meant a lot to the family, because the called him little nemo from before he was born.
A fascinating original video! So eloquently explained.
+Balloon Sage - Fascinating and eloquent, huh?
+Balloon Sage - I love that you always find something nice to say. Thanks.
You have my sincerity. It's great to see you back making many vids again. I was looking at your lineup and I didn't even see the Koala in your "uploads" queue, although I see it in your "videos" queue. Strange.
I uploaded the koala and had it set to hidden for awhile. That way I could give early access to my supporters on Patreon before making it public. I assumed CZcams would notify my subscribers once I made it public, but it did not. So, next time I know to re-upload the video instead of just changing it from hidden to public.
Ooooh I see, okay. I don't know anything about patreon. I need to read about it. I need to get one for myself as I need the extra money. You will be the first (and probably only) person I will become a patron of as soon as I set it up.
I love it!! Finally, math I care about, great job.
Isn't the easy answer, "you blew it up too much! " Mr. Boma is showing off! :)
+pastorsteve1964 - correct. But knowing the "80% rule," you can now better estimate how much to blow it up.
Oh my god... you're my favorite. You win all the internets.
Me thinks you jest.
One of the things students love to ask is, "When will I ever use this in the real world?" For volume of a sphere, the answer is, "When making balloon animals, that's when."
I think I was watching a lot of Numberphile videos when I came up with this one.
Haha, no, I'm dead serious. I'm terrible with math. I wish I understood it better and could apply it to things like this. So using a complicated mathematical formula to explain why my balloon eyes are always too big is one of the best things I've ever seen. 100% serious :)
And did it make sense?
Loved the explanation and the math sample. New to your channel, are you a math teacher by trade?
Science teacher, actually.
Let me guess... you're a math teacher? Who else knows this stuff? Thanks for sharing!
+Knoxville Party Magic - science teacher, actually.
You haven't been on CZcams for a while
Are you okay
I'm teaching high school science full time this year. So I'm just too busy to make videos. Thanks for your concern.
Ok have fun
I have that planned, but it won't be for another month or so. I am busy with end of the school year stuff. And then have a busy few weeks after that.
You lost me at the 3's cross each other out. Sorry - failed math.
That's called cross-cancelling. The 3 on top means "multiply times 3" and the 3 on the bottom means "divide by 3." If you do each of those things, you are right back where you started - they are exact opposites. So to save ourselves some steps, we can just cross them out. And even if you didn't quite get why, you can still benefit from knowing that the eyes are about 80% the size of the originals, not 50%.
+Mr. Boma's Balloons Thank you for your personal response. I totally understand the "mechanics" of it but the formula is eons from me! I wish I had had a teacher like you when I was in high school! Thank you again!
