  • Care-O-bot® is the product vision of a mobile robot assistant to actively support humans in domestic environments. The meanwhile fourth generation of this successful development series is more agile and modular than its predecessors and offers various ways of interaction. It also stands out through the use of cost-reducing construction principles. Individual robot platforms can be configured for a wide range of applications.
The way of how Care-O-bot® 4 was designed to make it a unique concept is now explained in an entertaining video.

This type of robot would be useful in helping the elderly in assisted living areas. Children would also enjoy interacting with this type of robot. The TV show "Lost In Space" with the robot that helped out a lot comes to mind.

Nice, but we all know today that the real battle is in software not hardware. From Google, to CZcams, to Facebook to Uber to Twitter to Microsoft Windows to Apple(hardware+software; huge profits margins) vs Samsung (no software, tiny profit margins). We see on every level it is about software if you want to lead. And if there is anything that requires incredible software it is a human like robot intended to perform a 1000+ tasks. So before some American companies will lead in robotics completely, this team needs to massively start focusing on large software teams, an independent software program that is patented and can be used in other robots, like Windows can be used in all sorts of computers and like Android can be used in all sorts of smartphones and tablets. We need to see Care-o-Bot have a software program with many researchers, companies, universities in Germany or the entire EU working on the SOFTWARE. Get it to talk, map it`s environment, perform a 1000+ different tasks and do it quickly with great software. It`s 80% Software, 20% hardware. Before you know it everyone will be able to build the hardware including China and everyone else. Independent software is what will lead the robotic revolution. And Google and Apple thus already have a dangerous and huge advantage even if they are currently not using it YET for human like robots.

Any update on this? 3 years on, how has this developed?

      Dear Bridget Leathley,
Thank you for your inquiry and your interest in Care-O-Bot 4.
Since November 2017, the Fraunhofer IPA spin-off "Mojin Robotics" is working on the commercialization of the Care-O-bot 4: If you are a user and want to rent or buy the robot to use it for the interaction with and guidance of people in public buildings (without arms and grippers), or if you want to purchase it as a research platform (individual hardware configuration), please visit mojin-robotics.de/
Further development of the robot is taking place at Fraunhofer IPA. In particular, functions are developed for 3D environment detection and object recognition as well as for the handling of objects and mobile manipulation. We also focus on the application-specific development of robot hardware, e.g. for the automated distribution of snacks and beverages. One application is the day-to-day support of elderly people and use of the robots in residential care facilities. The robot is used in various research projects, but not as a product in health applications. If you are interested in joint research and development projects in this application context, please visit www.ipa.fraunhofer.de/assistiverobots
