Stan and Jim did an outstanding job of hiding this memo from Joe , Sana and C.B .30+ years later and they STILL haven't found it .
God I miss the old days of Marvel. The Bullpen. Stan's Soapbox. Ads to sell Grit. Hostess Fruit Pie ads with the Fantastic Four. Too much to list here.
I liked the ad where the nerd gets sand kicked on him, then trains to kick the bully's ass and steal his girl.
@@nervclax7458 and An Atlas Body? In Seven Days
I miss good stories and characters.
...the Merry Marvel Marching Society, opening splash pages, Stan's alliteration in the credits... good times, good times.
@@OmegaWarGreymon That also of course.
Stan Lee was a professional. Today, we just have a bunch of amateurs with a lot of ego.
Armatures would suggest that they are at least partially interested in the job. What we have are a bunch of parasites that are abusing the PC and SJW culture takeover of anything fun to get an "easy" job. And the lack of skill shows.
I was at Target. They have lots of plus-sized female mannequins, but not a single plus-sized male mannequin.
Women are ruining what has traditionally been a male driven medium. What do you think would happen if we demanded romance novels replace Fabio with Seth Rogen?
Welcome to the new, gyno-centric millennium, bud. Its only further downhill from here.
@infinityrose92 you're assuming the people actively raising their children are a majority.
In my early twenties, i worked in afterschool care and the amount of children with parents who were either too taxed from a long work week to follow up with unfinished homework or simply didnt care was amazing.
I could count on one hand how many children between the two grades i took care of who had a parental figure at home whose sole job was to make sure the person they were raising was happy and healthy.
Originally, i thought i was only there to help with homework and make sure they played nice with one another but with each passing year, i started realizing id become ad hoc parent.
It screwed me up enough that i quit.
Replace Fabio with Beetlejuice from the Howard Stern show.
HUEH HUEH HEH HUEH
I think Stan was saying not enough effort went into making the women's faces attractive. Because their figures were shapely enough IMO.
when manspreading was MANDATORY
The Burning Sensation Depends on where you’re sitting :)
I could read an entire book of Stan Lee critiquing Marvel. Fascinating!
Back when adults who were professional ran a successful comic industry. Makes one nostalgic.
Who would have thought that not alienating your readers would be the secret to success?
Um, ask the Hollywood gang who are copying this self destruction business.
One reason I enjoy this channel is the old comic talk. I miss the days of comic debates.
Kulls stance reminds me of Shaggy from Scooby Doo.
Respect the characters. Make a good story and don't be a punk. Easy money.
I goddam LOVE Jim Shooter and his work, even as a teenager he could run with the big dogs of comics, as time goes by it's all the more evident what a true prodigy and mainstream wheelhouse talent he is, his craftsmanship has never wavered, he has set the gold standard repeatedly, a proper and genuine comics man
Geez I wish I would of met Stan he created one of my heroes spider man the Toby magurie series helped me a lot during school
Zack, Stan Lee was right about making comics appeal to the people who buy their books. They are the ones putting money into your pockets. Good job Zack. Keep up the good work!!!
Zack:
OMG did you just say a man looking effeminate means he's weak?!
.
.
YES!!!!
Me:
You know, I haven't gotten around to hitting the "like" button yet. Time to take care of that.
Wolverine depicted as helpless in the ground, instead of being in the front, taking down the enemy by himself? Good times before people misunderstood “healing factor” for “we can throw a plane at him and he’ll survive”.
You should do a mini review of Miraculous Ladybug (It’s on Netflix), it’s a popular kids superhero show with a female protagonist that does what the SJW types refuse to do in their comics such as have her be interested in boys and not be best friends with all the female characters and guess what? Kids of both genders love the show.
Does it have the main character trying to make sure people know she is female most of the time?
Zack, speaking of Jim Shooter the following is from his wikipedia entry. I thought it was pertinent insofar as Clown Show Marvel editorial being clearly oblivious to this stuff:
"While Marvel editor-in-chief in 1982, Shooter detailed what he considered the necessary qualities for a good comic book story:
The characters must be introduced.
Their situation must be established.
The conflict must be introduced.
Suspense must be built.
A climax must be reached.
A resolution must be achieved.
... When I evaluate a story, should one of the essential elements listed above be missing - say, the characters are not introduced properly when they are brought onstage - I immediately suspect that the author of the "story" knoweth not what he ith [sic] doing.
Second, I look for how well the story is told. Is the conflict worthwhile? Is the climax exciting? Is the resolution satisfying? Is the plot good? Are there interesting twists and turns? Is there a theme? Is there character development? Is it dramatic? Is it entertaining? This is the really important stuff. It should go without saying that a writer or a prospective writer should know enough to meet the fundamental requirements of a story. It's the power and the passion and drama and characterization that I really look for."
"Girls, when Jim has to be drawn..." XD
I totally want to know what Stan Lee would have made out of that sentence.
I can't believe they got away with giving Jean Grey a landing strip on that cover
So that's why Ive been buying so much 70s Marvel lately
How is magneto surviving that cover!?
He's getting blasted in the head by both cyclops and colossus. I don't see a magnetic shield or anything up. He's just getting his brains liquefied.
"Hey kid, you want the Kull comic or the LSD?" The 70's truly were a different time Zach.
Damn, Stan is ROASTING Byrne! And he's not wrong..this is early Byrne, so yeah,
This memo shows how battered Stan Lee was towards the end as these creeps systematically destroyed what he built.
Emsnews Supkis no it doesnt, this is the late 70s comics were about to get better than ever in the 80/eary 90:
@@cursedfakenewscfn967 You make no sense at all. This 'death of comics' isn't like the 1970's. That was a slow down, this is annihilation.
Summary of Stan Lee's letter
"Assign the job to someone that can do it well, thanks"
This is probably the greatest video you ever made and man Stan told it like it is back in the day respect.
I didn't think Kull looked effeminate, just like he really had to pee. 🤷♂️
Kull was another Robert E. Howard creation. In fact, he's almost literally the prototype for Conan, with his first Conan story being recycled from an unfinished Kull story. In-universe, Kull lived several thousand years before Conan, in the pre-cataclismic Thurian (Atlantean) age
Marvel was certainly just trying to capitalize on the success of their 1970 Conan adaptation and the rise in popularity of the sword-and-sorcery genre. Red Sonja (not a Howard creation, but inspired by his work) was another Conan spin-off from the same era.
And he's saying to Thulsa Doom "I can't go with you watching."
@@cthulhutoad Well, Doom is wearing a DRESS!!! :)
He looks scared and uncertain, like he's never held an axe before. Not exactly confidant and bold.
@@MrDevious88 yes, his stance and posture are weak, timid, not even a good defense.
Zack can do Top 5 EASY.
ALSO. I bought God-King at the $50 tier so I could get another copy of Lost Souls, and see if I can get it into my local library by donating it with a bunch of other books I’m planning on donating. Just because. I can make a statement too. 👍🏼👍🏼
The SJW's are now in a lose-lose situation in which they can't deny that it's hypocritical for them to criticise you and not Stan Lee. And if they did criticise Stan Lee, they'd be condemned, just as they should be. GO get em Zack! Great video man
Dude, where’s the Jawbreakers link. You’re slippin’, Zack. Are we trying to beat DC or what? Handle biz, son!
What foul sorcery is this?!
Wanting to actually sell comics?
Gawd!!! I love the look of that xmen #113 cover art. I remember reading that now I have to look for it lol.
I think it's funny that no matter how much time goes by the song remains the same.
Cool art, interesting stories, colors that pop and people who look like the very best of their genders will always sell and Stan knew the business no doubt.
Too bad today's "editors" think putting the worst visual representations of both the art and the people as well as the writing will sell books.
I was watching a video The Fourth Age put out today about awful comics (surprising how much time I spend watching those) are and why.
He thought the new currency for Marvel was shame and blame which I guess kind of makes sense.
There is no fixing our real nature though and that seems like what they're trying to accomplish I guess.
Sweet! Remember all of Stan's advice and don't compromise.
Stan tearing up JOHN BYRNE AND BOB LAYTON?
WOW
Bob Layton inked that cover? That explains it. Bob Layton was still pretty weak back then. Byrne gave him a tightly penciled cover, with lots of fine line work (fine lines that would not have turned to squiggles due to the printing plates on the cover printing), but Bob just took lots of short cuts. Look at the lines in the floor: he drew parallel lines, then tried to break them up with some white out slashes.
Loved this video. Stuff like this is way more interesting than current year Iron Dad.
I just realized how much Stan was on the ball! He gave Shooter 2 examples of extremes in covers angles with the X-Men and the HULK. X-men cover camera angle was too far away, with small figures, leading to Byrne skimping on the women's faces, and the Hulk cover camera angle being so close, you can't see what the "Murder Module" actually looks like.
Pretty good Art Direction there, Stan! RIP
The spirit of Sten Lee will live on in people like you who have a passion to create cool comics
If you want to sell more shirts, Zack, put more shirt designs on Teespring. I’d love a shirt with the JawBreakers on it. I don’t need it through IndieGoGo.
Point-of-Order: Snake-Eye's ding-a-ling supersedes all other ding-a-lings.
Everyone in the industry may have hate Jim Shooter when he was Marvel editor in chief but boy oh boy he push some of the standards that almost rival to this day most editors. If He have gotten away with his ideas he should have being Marvel owners before he created Valiant comics from the beginning.
Boy do i miss Solar and Magnus under his wing.
The great thing about all these reprints of old comics is they include the letters pages. It gives you a real sense of how Marvel treated customers and the emphasis they put on sales in the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, etc.
use the controller menu to turn off your ps4 it won't have the orange light and it should pick up right where you left off
Mr. Shooter, come back. We need you!
Memo leak from Splatto Del Gato.
1. Listen to customers, hear what they want.
2. Put out quality comics with awesome art and story.
3. Coughs are optional
4. Review current comics from other companies. Let the customer know they aren’t missing anything.
5. Explain your anxieties to customers, as well as Gemini mailing boxes and hairlines.
Remember when going to the comic store was fun and you'd come home with a bag of books you couldn't wait to read?
Reminds me of an old, published feature about creating the cover to Batman vs the Incredible Hulk in the 80s. Marvel editorial kicked on Garcia-Lopez' original version because he made the Hulk's feet look dainty. The published version was much better.
This is a GREAT video. It totally vindicates your takes on modern comics and lack of editor oversight. Of course we’ve known that a long time. That’s why we’re here.
Also Shooters time at Valiant is a favorite period of comics for me personally.
I always thought John Byrne drew both Jean Grey and Storm really sexy. Not sure what Stan Lee was talking about.
Really love the impressions, Zack. Please don't stop doing them.
This is something that I've been saying for a while and I know a lot of others have to but details are very important. I would say they are the most important. Because even the best products fall apart if the details aren't there.
I keep thinking you are saying Karen Gillan, and I keep wondering when Nebula started writing comics
@@uphilliceskater highly overrated and very self impressed
I seem to remember Jim Shooter also changed Marvel stories from long multiple issues stories to single-issue DC style format. In the end, it started the trend towards upending Lee's esteem continuity in the books and thusly opening the doors to continuous reboots and one-shots diluting the universe.
Hold on a sec, why hasn't Jim Shooter made another company yet? he's alive, he's an industry expert and he still has a legion of fans, if he did a Kickstarter or IndieGoGo he could easily reach jawbreaker levels.
I didn't know about your new comic, but I'm gonna help launch it to #1! You absolutely will get there, I have no doubt. :3 I think we're (almost) past the sadness of Marvel's passing, and something goes here about how you basically came out of nowhere to overthrow the comics industry by doing nothing more sophisticated than giving your customers what they want. Amazing.
If the glare is driving Zack crazy, imagine what a laser pointer might do...
Anyways, Zack, push Splatto more. I watch you everyday and honestly forgot that channel existed.
Every time Zach complains about foreshortening or line thickness, I remember that he also is a fan of Rob Liefeld.
Frankly, I was rather shocked at just how badly Kull was drawn. The figure work is horrible.
Lessons from the master, thanks.
"...typical human situations, such as appearing on the tv shows." Guessing that means as is seen on the Hulk tv show with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno, like busting through a wall or turning over a car.
Mike's Amazing World doesn't list anyone separate for the cover, however, Penciller (for the book) was listed as John Byrne and Inker was Terry Austin. Incidentally, the Letterer was Annette Kawecki and the Colorist was Glynis Wein (Oliver).
Stan Lee and Jim Shooter where not the only editors that used to work very hard with cover artist. If you get Spider-man vs Superman and Batman VS The Hulk 1970's crossovers, you can read what the editor asked who the manage to get to the cover on the front of the book. In Superman vs Spider-man the editor was trying to make the heroes be seen as equals in power. For Batman VS The Hulk, the idea was to make the Hulk as cool and powerful as it can be.
Rest In Peace smiling Stan you were loved by many
Stan Lee: Our original boi, Zack. If only he could have been roasting these covers on CZcams in '78 rather than just in a memo to Shooter.
So happy for your success zack! That's pretty impressive to be honest.
You know, it's almost like Stan Lee knew what he was doing...
Just watch pretty much ANY video of Stan talking about comics. His enthusiasm is infectious.
Any time im feelin low or not in the mood to draw, i look up Stan videos.
This was fantastic. I finally turned in again for quite a gem.
Cecil's livestream was a five hour free-for-all. But, I enjoyed every minute of it.
Oh, and that Hulk cover looks like it was drawn by Herb Trimpe.
Zack, 101,000 people need their Luna fix!
As an off and on fan of comics where I would poke my head in and see what's happening and maybe read one of the books that featured a character or concept I liked one of them was marvel zombies.
I've been hearing rumors of modern day marvel wanting to bring back marvel zombies and all I can think about is how anti modern marvel the orginal world and storyline was. It was dark, cold and depressing filled with death and despair where nobody was safe on the play of pain and suffering they presented to the reader it was a disturbing nightmare that you couldn't just look away from. In the world of marvel zombies magneto died a hero trying to atone for his crimes by saving a group of civilians and the ultimate universes reed Richard's by facing down and fighting a zombified avengers team including people like a zombified hulk and letting the civilians and ult!reed escape to the ultimate universe and destroying the portal from the side of his dieing world daming himself while giving salvation to others. Now that is a tale with heart and soul in it and I don't think the current writing style of comics could do it justice.
What get`s me more than the pose: Kull uses an axe... but has a sord scabbard strapped to his hip.
Stan Lee and Jim Shooter....that makes me happy and sad at the same time.
Kull looks like hes trying to not shit his pants
To me looking at the Kull cover I figure Kull is in mid-movement. Like he is turning to face the villain, hence the awkward stance. Atleast that's what I'd think as a viewer.
Dang it!! I was going to start a comic called Wimps&Backfat. Thanks alot. Ya dream crucher!
Your channel was suggested by comic artist pro. I must say, what a excellent suggestion it was!
The thought that someone had to sit there, drawing folds of fat, drawing cellulite. It's like...what world am I living in? The comics I read as a kid had only TWO fat deposits on the heroine's bodies, and they typically looked like they were gonna tip over.
God that man knew what he was doing. And now Marvel is full of clowns inacapable of selling books.
I really Miss Stan the Man Lee
The Robert E. Howard Conan stories are amazing. The Sprague DeCamp ones are a little hit and miss for me. Glad you're smoking the competition with God King.
Shit, Zack, you're gonna _love_ Robert E. Howard's original Conan books. I started reading them a while back, and the man can write like a demon. In two short sentences he can describe a setting and establish a clear atmosphere.
There's a great video of Stan Lee where he talks about including social issues in stories, but never making it too overt and never at the expense of good story-telling. I wish every Marvel SJW would watch that and take it to heart.
Ya Boi feels his roast game renewed as he drinks deep of the font of the original Roast-God, Stan the Man.
I'm going to order G0D K1NG on Tuesday. Looking forward to it.
Congratulations!
Great video ,Zack !!!
Devil Dog is tougher, ruggeder, and dangerouser than any villain!
Great example as to why Stan Lee's way of thinking was successful. Marvel nowadays feels like they've already made it, they're already successful so they think they don't have to put in any effort anymore and it shows. Even back then when Marvel was already successful, Stan was still striving for above and beyond - just good wasn't good enough.
Wow, to think the legends of the past actually had a plan instead of just saying, "so, I did a thing."
24:55 "And it literally says "enjoy the game without challenging combat" hahaha." Got 'em.... Got yourself? need a good ring to it. "Ha, Got me!"
Kull would have looked tougher with a one-handed grip on the ax, right hand forward, left hand and foot back. Have the left hand cocked back as if he were going to throw a punch if the ax swing misses.
A livestream with EVS would be helpful to push those numbers up, just an idea.
Never doubt Zack (unless it's about movies).
Zak has a murder module. He's playing dumb, pretending not to know what it is
35 cents in today's money would be $1.38. Back then, we complained about
- the cheap, pulpy newsprint paper,
- the switch from metal printing plates to plastic or rubber ones that could not hold a fine thin black line after being used to print 100,000 copies of an issue
- the limitations of the Comics Code Authority
- and having to wait an entire month for a new installment of Claremont and Byrne's X-men run.
Well, eventually we got comics printed on the same stock as the covers. When a successful book sells 50,000 copies instead of 250,000 a month, the printing plates are not an issue. The Comics Code Authority is gone. When Marvel was giving us an X-men book every week, the material sucked. And while I would have gladly have paid $1.38 back in 1978 for that run of X-men, I would feel ripped off by paying $1.38 for most the dreck that passes for an X-men book nowadays.
Speaking of "rugged and masculine gay men", Shore Leave from the Venture Bros is a really good example of that too. He is FLAMINGLY gay, but he also kicks an enormous amount of ass. He's the most masculine gay character I've ever seen in pretty much any show.
Stan will forever be the Man.
Ya boi!! GREAT video!
Zacks take on kids in the 70's
"Should I buy comics or should I buy acid?"
Lmao! Man I was born I the wrong era.
Jokes aside, awesome video.
Duke had command over Flint. Flint was 2nd for the longest time.
Where the hell is Jim Shooter in all this? If he were still around in the comic industry, I fell like he wouldn't be taking any of this shit. I know a lot of people dislike him, but he was a great leader. Would love for him to start his own company or be given an imprint
