  • Mark Richardson did me (Alec Gill) a great honour when he asked if he could make a short documentary film about my B&W Photography Exhibition called "The Hessle Roaders".
I was delighted and had no hesitation to agree straight away. During 2017, when my hometown Hull was UK's City of Culture 2017-2021, this exhibition toured three top venues in the port at its Hull History Centre (May-June); St John's St John the Baptist, Newington, Hull (in the heart of the former fishing community August-September) and the well-known Hull Truck Theatre (October-November).
I have never received funding during my forty-plus years of documenting the people of Hull's Hessle Road Fishing Community; but Smith & Nephew agreed to sponsorship the production of the initial 100 photographs.
In total, I took 6,636 negatives during the 1971-1986 period. During 2016, I digitized 1,300 images. From these came the 100 in the initial exhibition. Many, many more exhibitions are planned with Curator and Producer Paul Berriff OBE and myself. We want to show these images to a world-wide audience in top galleries around the planet.
