  • Rough 5 minute outline of the Triple Trawler Tragedy in Hull, 1968, and the subsequent women's campaign for safer working conditions at sea. Their campaign led to the government introducing new safety laws. The women became known as 'The Headscarf Revolutionaries'. Many thanks to The Watersons / Merlin for permission to use their song 'Three Day Millionaire'.

Half way through reading the book. Wow, what those trawlermen had to battle at sea was incomprehensible. Lil, Yvonne, Christine and Mary are heroes and make me proud of being a Hullensian. I'd love to see a fitting tribute installed somewhere prominent in Hull. This would also make a great tv series and deservedly increase the profile of their selfless achievements.

Really sad. I’m reading the Headscarf Revolutionaries book too, So many young lads died. Ship owners were scumbags and as this video clip shows life was cheap to them. My grandfather was born in Hull and used to swim in the docks as a kid. If people on strike today think they have it hard they ought to read this book, jeez, we don’t know we are born nowadays.

0:28 shows the real problem. The side of the trawler was barely six feet above water level while the ship was leaving harbour.
Only a small wave from the side would dump vast quantities of water aboard.

Rose White as side trawlers though the freeboard on the sides of the vessel had to be low to allow the nets to be easily cast and then hoisted back aboard. The hull sides had scuppers built into them too so any water taken aboard would drain off again as the ship rolled. Side trawlers were later replaced by stern trawlers which were more efficient and more seaworthy. The M.T. Gaul from Hull which was later lost was a stern trawler.

      @finnplanb3 Před 2 lety +1

that's not the issue. the trawlers sank from ice build up on the super structure. a low freeboard doesn't mean much

@@finnplanb3 last radio calls said the trawlers were overwhelmed by waves coming from all sides and swamping them.
      Obviously ice buildup is bad.

The women and girls off Hessle Road were the toughest there ever was. Biggest hearts too.
It was the ice from the sea spray that caused the little ships to roll over.. turn turtle they called it. If they could not break it off fast than it piled up they were lost.

Two very good documentaries on utube:
    Triple Trawler Tragedy
    Hull Headscarf Heroes
    The three trawlers were:
    Peridot
    St Romanus
    Ross Cleveland
Only one person survived the Ross Cleveland in 1968, his name was Harry Eddom - I sing the song Harry Eddom which tells the story. Linda Kelly wrote a song about her husband who decided not to sail on the Peridot and he escaped the diaster of all men on board dying - the song is called The Luckiest Sailor.

One of the captains James Wheeldon of the St Romanus, was a relative of mine. Think he’s my great great uncle not 💯 sure, I’ve been told many stories about this over the years & each time the story changes. Very very sad indeed. My other uncle Victor Wheeldon was supposed to be on the St Romanus that day but he wasn’t very well. I just don’t understand why this happened, 3 trawlers in a matter of weeks very strange 😊

You're right, of course, Will. Well spotted. Fake news indeed, or maybe dramatic licence. This piece was originally made as reference material for people involved in potential project of mine - and still is - so was concentrating more on flavour than accuracy.
