    Thanks! I just got a silver toast rack at a thrift shop for $3 but after polishing it up and looking up the marks, I find that it's solid sterling. Hadn't known about the lion passant, but that's what it has on the bottom.

      That's awesome Kevin! There are spurious marks out there, but often times English hallmarks are overlooked at thrift stores.

    • @morobrany
      @morobrany Před rokem +2

      I doubt it's spurious because it polished up perfectly. Looking up the hallmark and dates, it's James Dixon and Sons made in Sheffield in 1897.

    Great information but would be much more helpful if you would add clear close-ups of the marks themselves? Thanks!

  • @sparkleeverafterwithgina5540

    Hi Jason. Thanks for all the info! Just a comment about showing details on your items. If you hold them in front of your face, sometimes with your hand behind the piece, it will focus on the piece. Otherwise, the camera is trying to focus on your face, especially if you're holding the piece to the side. Just my 2 cents, (from the daughter of a photographer) :) Thanks, again, for sharing your knowledge!

      Halls is a local to Kansas City retailer that has carried nice inventory for decades. Since they are marked SILVERPLATE, they are definitely silver plate.

    I’m brand new to collecting. This was very interesting with regards to trying to spot real stuff. I’ve been switching to silver plate wine glasses from glass. I don’t care about matching, I care that they don’t break and are safe to use for drinking wine. I love the engraved wedding cups with couples names on them the most. My favorite right now is a long goblet with “Chris & Vickie 1976 engraved on it. I didn’t know replating was a thing. That sounds great. These things have turned out to be fun, easy to find in thrift stores and antique stores and they’re not expensive to collect.

      Hi Shirley, I'm not sure what the NSO means, but the EPNS stands for Electro-Plated Nickel Silver meaning that your pieces are silver plate. The value that they would have is based solely on the popularity of the maker and pattern.

    I can feel with my fingers whether its plate or not even through tarnish. Ive picked up silver items in thrift shops that way because often the staff cant tell.
    Before the modern era in the uk a piece of silver would actually have a tiny bit scraped off for testing,gold and silver. So that can be something to look for in an inconspicuous area.
