    When I worked for Lon I was exposed to a lot of different amp and speaker combinations, especially when I worked with your studio set up, Tim. I recently purchased IK Multimedia's Amplitube 5 Max for my computer and I can track nearly any combination of amps, speakers, effects, rooms, mics, the whole nine yards. And since I have a job where I travel the country regularly, the convenience is invaluable. I suspected that my next step would be the Tonex, and this video really drove that home! Thanks for the info, Tim!

    Love the blind test! I personally liked 'sound 1' more but I love how I made that choice on what it sounded like and not what it looked like. I'd probably still buy a tone x over a plexi for the versatility anyway. I'd love to hear a capture of your actual amp. I beleive the speakers would make a huge difference in the overall sound. Thanks Tim! :)

    Looks really interesting. Even as an engineer, with hands on DSP software development experience, I've been resistant to these boxes for a long time, due to the UI, the menu-under-menu thing that all the 80's era synths had. The test for me, is if I haven't played it in a year, can I still remember how to navigate the controls and get the sound I want, without breaking out a manual.

      The ToneX couldn't be simpler. Just pick a profile you like. Most amps have a sweet spot, and most profiles are in the sweet spot. The EQ is post, so you can boost or cut bass mids or treble if you want, but it doesn't actually change the knobs on the amp.

    • @chipsawdust5816
      @chipsawdust5816 Před 21 dnem

      @@JacksonAxe I'm gonna be 66 next year and have some gear that timed out 10-15 years ago but damn some of this new stuff is good. And keeps getting better. Too bad when my lead guitarist died the band fell apart but I'm slowly getting back into it and although I can't scratch $400 tougher for this pedal, there's a ton of software out there that won't age out on me as fast as some of the digital boxes I've bought in the past.
      The thing about the ToneX as opposed to some others is it has a really involved community of support. Not like M-Audio or Genesis and so on. So it might be a good investment.

    I am amazed how close the ToneX gets at a fraction of the price of a Kemper or QC. Obviously it does not have all the other effects those others systems do, but if all you want is great amp captures in a small foot pedal, and don’t need the extra effects, it’s a no brainer at $1500 less.

    I think the Tone X sounded slightly more brittle/spikey when playing rhythm on the bridge pickup, but overall, completely useable and it sounds really good to my ear. The MArshall sounded a little bit warmer and pleasing, but but I'd still buy the Tone X, no doubt. I only own one amp, a Vox, so this would give me many other alternatives, which is cool and worth a lot. It sounds like they did a great job with their captures.

    Wonderful honest video Tim. I've been eyeing this pedal for a while now. Also, great to see TSR Matchless tone sitting at number one in the list. They are great guys too ! @TheStudioRats

    Great video Tim. With the ToneX, were you using an IR loader plugin?

    Sounds fantastic. I did guess the blind test, but I just picked the one I liked best - had a bit more weight to it. Some of the others I preferred the ToneX. Amazing pedal. Great video. Cheers Tim!

    It's absolutely crazy the functionality you can get these days for a few hundred bucks. I had a Rockman when I started playing in the '80's. Paid $99 for it and had clean, distortion, and reverb I believe, and I thought it was great.

      Me too, that little blue first edition Rockman pedal just was different and i thought it was the greatest thing ever lol.The distortion sounded mean too 😊

    The Plexi vs digital was very obvious. Not that one sounds "better", but the highs sound very digitized on the latter
