  • We did the Paparoa Great Walk as part of our preparation for the 2000km Pacific Northwest Trail (PNT) in 2024. Great Walks make for good training trips because the surface is similar to what we'll often walk on in the USA. We struck the most fabulous weather for our 3 days/2 nights on the track. We started from Smoke-ho Carpark in Blackball and had our car relocated to the Punakaiki end while we walked. A highlight was the side trip up Croseus Knob - stunning views as far as Aoraki/Mt Cook
Day 1: Smoke-ho to Moonlight Tops Hut via Ces Clark Hut
Day 2: Moonlight Tops Hut to Pororari Hut
Day 3: Pororari Hut to Punakaiki Road End
We got out at lunchtime, headed to Hokitika to resupply, then headed up the less groomed Styx Valley for another adventure.

Another fantastic vid. Thanks so much for sharing. Heading off the do the Paparoa this coming weekend so this is particularly timely! Can I ask about the carry method for the Canon camera on the hip belt (sorry I don't know your names). In fact, a gear review video would be great from you guys as your kit looks very dialled. Cheers, Scott

Hi - we both use Capture Clips and it just differs where we mount them. Matt put his on the hip belt - by cutting a slit to get it through - because his shoulder strap was too wide to get it around. Capture clips are really the way to go. I did worry about the camera on his hip when it got a bit scambly though! If the weather's good, don't miss Croseus Knob. We wanted to do the Pike sidetrip too but the track wasn't open when we did it last year.
