PNT Days 4-6

PNT Days 1-3

Here are the first 3 days of our trip in Glacier National Park. We did 7 days of the Continental Divide Trail as a prelude to the Pacific Northwest Trail. These are being edited on the go, so are more basic than my usual videos. They give a taste of what it’s like, so enjoy.

2500km, 30 hours, five states: we travel from Chicago, Illinois to Whitefish, Montana to prepare for the start of the Pacific Northwest Trail.
Houston
zhlédnutí 53Před měsícem
Those following along may wonder what we’re doing in Houston when we’re supposed to be walking the PNT. To get to the start of the trail in Glacier National Park, we originally planned to take the direct AirNZ flight to Chicago, spend a few days exploring the city, then jump on the Empire Builder train to East Glacier, a 30 hour ride. We’re still doing all that, but when AirNZ cut 5he direct fl...

On New Year’s Eve, we set off from Makarora with 9 days of food in our packs to explore the Young and Wilkin Valleys. The day before, we had driven two cars up the Matukituki Valley. We intended to head into Mt Aspiring National Park at Makarora, go up the Young Valley, over Gillespie Pass, visit Lake Crucible and then go up the South Branch of the Wilkin River. We had never been up the South B...
Shedding Pack Weight: Clothes
zhlédnutí 196Před 2 měsíci
Three years ago, we were hefting pretty heavy packs. The last straw for big packs was a five day trip on the Hollyford Track. Despite being a group of 12 (meaning food, cooking equipment and other communal gear was spread out), our packs were huge and heavy! We realised that we had to make changes or we were never going to be able to realise our dream of completing the 2000km Pacific Northwest ...
Paparoa
zhlédnutí 399Před 2 měsíci
We did the Paparoa Great Walk as part of our preparation for the 2000km Pacific Northwest Trail (PNT) in 2024. Great Walks make for good training trips because the surface is similar to what we'll often walk on in the USA. We struck the most fabulous weather for our 3 days/2 nights on the track. We started from Smoke-ho Carpark in Blackball and had our car relocated to the Punakaiki end while w...

Well this was ironic. When telling people about our Pacific Northwest Trail plans - a 2000km National Scenic Trail in the United States from Montana to Washington State - we are sometimes asked why not walk Te Araroa. One of our reasons was always that we had no desire to walk through Auckland or Hamilton. Yet, here we are, doing a spot of urban tramping on the Auckland section of Te Araroa fro...
Corner Peak

The corrected version! A day trip up Corner Peak overlooking Lake Hāwea, near Wānaka. Corner Peak on a bluebird day is absolutely stunning and (in my opinion) better than Roys Peak or Isthmus Peak. It's a more challenging walk but worth the steep ascent and descent. With the kids visiting for the weekend, we took the opportunity to take a walk in our own backyard.

    Good on you for turning around. Rabbit Pass is certainly not everyone's bag. I would be the same. The drop off into the Matukituki side is apparently just as bad. It is definitely not a walk of shame to turn back!! I used to live in Makarora and the Wilkin holds a special place. Top Forks is one of my favourite spots. Nice to see it again. Thanks. I have a few reasons. I enjoy creating movies of the fun we have in the outdoors four our own memories and record, especially with our kids and other family I finally got them to the point that I felt they were good enough to share with the wider world. We are also pretty experienced hikers and have done some cool tramps and wanted to share that knowledge with others. Finally, as we embark on our thru-hike of the Pacific Northwest Trail in the USA, we wanted a place to share this adventure with friends, family and other interested people. We've also created a website to go with it. (onefootinfrontoftheother.nz) The as-we-go videos will be different as we hike the PNT and travel in South America - edited on an iPad using iMovie instead of Final Cut Pro, but I'll do proper edited ones next year when we return home. Not a short answer, sorry but you asked!

    Good calls. Definitely reduce the undies to 2 pairs. Good to see you got a Montbell windshirt. I'm looking at getting one of those Macpac alpha tops as I've heard very good stuff about them. I did a 6 day winter trip recently into Mungo Hut (with 2 days track work en route) and carried 11kg all up. My base weight was 7kg and I added 3kg of food and a gas canister, a 400g DCF tarp and PLB as party gear plus I had the secateurs for the track work. I carried my ice-axe in my hand.

    It would be interesting to see your lighter pack spreadsheet, and see what your overall gear weight is. Like you I love Cactus stuff and would like to support NZ brands as I have done for years (I'm from Dunedin), but I get the impression we are very behind in the development of the ultralight philosophy in NZ. I am getting older and my body isn't as limber as 20 years ago, but I still want to go tramping, so over the last few years I have gradually forked out quite a bit of money to swop out my tent, sleeping bag and sleeping mat to lighter and more modern versions. I have also pared down the clothing and cooking kit. I took the plunge and bought a Hyperlite Mountain Gear pack a few months ago, and it is a dream to carry! Some gear is a really expensive outlay, but if you think of the money you are spending travelling to the USA and walking for several weeks, I personally think its worth it to spend the money on quality light gear that you will hopefully use for years to come. Check out Lauren Roerick's channel- she is a Canadian woman who has done multiple thru hikes including the Te Araroa and seems to manage with a fairly minimal amount of gear. Thanks for your content, and good luck with your trip!

    • @onefootinfrontoftheothernz
      @onefootinfrontoftheothernz Před 2 měsíci

      Totally agree that lightweight is behind here. We have done the same with gear over the last couple of years. We went from a 3kg tent to 1.3kg and now to 550g. I put a post on our website about our pack/sleep/tent choices which I can't link on the FB page. Thanks, I''ll check out that channel too. I will share the lighterpack pies but I have had to redo them as I mucked things up and have to start again.

      @@onefootinfrontoftheothernz Aha I had a look at your website and you have obviously been through a similar process of gear research and lightening the load to me! I love my old Macpac Ascent pack from the year 2000 (although terrible for water bottles) and Minaret tent and used to carry it solo with a digital SLR camera!! I hope the Durston dyneema tent and all the rest of the gear works out well for you. Love the videos, thanks.

    Another fantastic vid. Thanks so much for sharing. Heading off the do the Paparoa this coming weekend so this is particularly timely! Can I ask about the carry method for the Canon camera on the hip belt (sorry I don't know your names). In fact, a gear review video would be great from you guys as your kit looks very dialled. Cheers, Scott

    • @onefootinfrontoftheothernz
      @onefootinfrontoftheothernz Před 2 měsíci

      Hi - we both use Capture Clips and it just differs where we mount them. Matt put his on the hip belt - by cutting a slit to get it through - because his shoulder strap was too wide to get it around. Capture clips are really the way to go. I did worry about the camera on his hip when it got a bit scambly though! If the weather's good, don't miss Croseus Knob. We wanted to do the Pike sidetrip too but the track wasn't open when we did it last year.

    Yes. It was mid-summer and the track had been newly marked with plastic snow poles . I’m not sure how they will stand up in the winter. On the whole, it’s a decent track through the bush sections.

  • @gjcoop5625
    @gjcoop5625 Před 5 měsíci

    That is more straightforward than some accounts I have read. Some of those snow poles may be new. It's probably harder when visibility is poor or you are doing it in the off-season, with limited light and real time pressure, but it's useful to know to sidle across to that ridge. Great views.
