Don’t clean the cage too much! They ALL (no matter the gender) scent Mark. So cleaning too much is actually counter intuitive as they will mark extra.
I’ve had to learn the same.
For litter training just make sure they have different litter in the litter box - and make it easy to access - rats are sorts lazy so they like easy access / often thus means multiple litter boxes. Use different litter than any main bedding so they can differentiate. Put any poop you find in the box. And get a PEE ROCK (a large / flat stone) rats love to pee on rocks. So tho they will always scent mark / this does help and cut down and the poop they’ll learn if you stay persistent. The rock can then be rinsed in water and vinegar when you do the litter box.
I spot clean daily and out any poop in the box which is rare now for mine.... but then I’ve cut deeper cleaning to every 10 days unless something is really bad or whatever.
I know it sounds crazy - but it does work and help.
All rats are different tho.
I see so much of me in you. My little boy talked me into rescuing 2. A pet I never imagined owning. I then fell in love and now we have a mischief of 7.

Ooooh Christina! So I’m not a rat momma but my guinea pigs are 8 years old and have lived on fleece their whole life and giirrrlll have I learned some things about rodent laundry. So adding an absorbent layer under the fleece is going to help reduce smell immensely. One of the best non expensive options is a U-haul furniture pad cut up (it’s recycled denim) to put under the fleece. The fleece will wick away moisture and keep them dry on top. BUT if you want to make cleaning a breeze I would recommend looking on Etsy for pre made pads that have uhaul pad and fleece sewn together so you can pick it up, dump it, and put it back. Cleaning is so much easier that way! You can even get waterproof canvas sewn as the bottom layer. If you can’t find any to fit your cage - message me and I can have you measure the cage, the openings for the ramps, etc. Learned to sew many years ago for my babies and can help ya out! As far as laundry goes. A free and clear detergent and vinegar will be your best friends. If you’re placing the laundry in the cage and it’s smelling in less than a day, there’s most likely a detergent build up in the laundry. When the detergent mixes with the ammonia in urine it stinksssss. So rinse rinse rinse after a wash with detergent until you see no bubbles during that wash and you’re good to go. If the laundry feels slimey you can add a penny sized amount of dawn dish detergent to cut the funk out. Good luck Rat Grandma 👵🏼. I feel your cage cleaning struggles!

Omg I’m so happy to see that you’re a rattie lover too and you have a proper enclosure! We have 5 girls in one enclose and 6 boys in 2 other enclosure. They’ve been very therapeutic for us and show us tremendous amounts of unconditional love.
