- Disney Rides and Universal Studios Rides. We talk a lot about ride malfunctions and breakdowns but there are many theme park rides where they intentionally planted malfunctions and mishaps in the storylines. Across the Disney and Universal theme parks, fake-outs or intentional malfunctions and mishaps have been built into the storylines of various rides and attractions. These ride breakdowns and malfunctions include Disney rides like Expedition Everest and Kilimanjaro Safaris at Disney's Animal Kingdom, Universal Studios rides like the Backlot Studio Tour's Earthquake attraction or The Revenge of the Mummy roller coaster. There's even an animatronic malfunction in Ogas Cantina in Star Wars Galaxy's Edge. Integrating intentional malfunctions are a perfect way for show writers to raise the stakes and create suspenseful moments that will surely keep you entertained. Rides with intentional malfunctions are always favorites of mine. There's a surprising amount of work that goes in to some of these rides to make the malfunctions seem real!
I have been on the Kilimanjaro Safari ride about 15 times and only one time did a driver mention the road closed sign and the danger of the bridge although it didn't shake. One other time a driver did mention it looked unsafe and held together with ropes. I think the long time drivers who were trained with the bridge effect working try to keep it going along with a kind of story line. But most if not all newer drivers seem to have been trained under a totally different script with a different attitude. I don't care for the poaching storyline but the ride itself could use a bit more spice. The one driver that added suspense and anecdotal stories to their narration made the ride much more interesting and enhanced the experience.
Both of the replies are identical to what my girl sent me after I said “K”

Me too! I was anticipating it when I went with my family and nothing happened, I’m sad they removed it.
I got picked as an “extra” for Indians Jones Experience a few years ago. At the time I was studying stage combat myself and already had three years under my belt. I got to talk to the crew afterwards and they were so sweet and accommodating to my questions! Love them!
Oh my gosh I love that show there
Talk about lucky lol
The last time I rode Expedition Everest, at the other track switching part just before the picture, the ride hesitated longer than usual and I was genuinely worried something was wrong. Don’t know if the longer pause was intentional, but it definitely added to my experience

I like to imagine that Rex was canonically reprogrammed after crashing the first time, and he then had his memory wiped however due to the memory wipe not completely working he will say things from his last memories on Star Tours like the chime and his voice lines, without knowing where they came from.
@Plague I have and experienced the exact same feeling.

Even though the ride isn't around anymore, the "hijacking" on the Great Movie Ride at Hollywood Studios is one of my favorites.
Another good one is the pre-show on Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout, where Rocket Raccoon interrupts Tivan's monologue and takes over.

My first time on revenge of the mummy I was a small child. I remember being terrified, and insisting that I kept my eyes closed the whole time. Durning the little fake out scene I finally open my eyes cause I thought it was over. I was wrong. I am now emotionally scarred.
The exact sane thing happened to me, its very uncanny how exactly the same it is

When i went on expedition everest, the ride acctually broke down at the top. We were sat there for around 2 minutes, because the track was struggaling to switch. Luckily it was fixed and we went down!

The first people to go on expedition Everest must have been pretty spooked
It was amazing I remember being there on their first soft open of the ride. My mom and I had such a blast.
I just went on that ride for the first time this year and I genuinely was scared having never known what it was like- So i can confirm that

I have and will always be impressed by the layout of Expedition: Everest. I remember the first time I rode it, that fake out scared the heck out of me, and I was in awe of how we went backwards a different path then forwards. Lol I remember the part where she “punches” the guy.
Also I never thought Of the broken track as a malfunction
The broken track is just so well known that lots of people don’t think about it
Yeah in my opinion, I think the mummy should've come first, I do appreciate the work that went into Expedition Everest, but for malfunctions I think it shouldn't be 1st but 2nd
Me neither. But I remember my first time on it, I was legit freaked out
I almost cried watching that one. I worried what would have happened if that was someone from my family who volunteered.

The tour guide going "raise your hand if you fell off" totally went over everyone's head. 🤣🤣🤣
So I have a crazy and kinda creepy malfunction story. I have been on Haunted Mansion two times and the first time I was five years old. I was definitely already terrified, and I had sat down and gotten pretty far-about to the ballroom scene- and the ride stopped. That creepy voice came over the intercom and said the "sorry malfunction" bit, and after a few minutes of sitting in terrified silence (for me at least) the ride continued. I was honestly so scared. Anyways, some years later (I was about 11) I went on it again. Not scared at all. As we made our way through I just prayed "please don't get stuck please don't get stuck" and lo and behold, we got stuck. And you'll never guess where. In the ballroom scene. Almost the exact same spot too! So, yeah! Pretty weird.
(In case you are wondering, I have not been to the Disney parks since- for unrelated reasons btw)
Oh I remember the poacher story. I went when that was still going. The story line was really cool and it sucks that they took it out. I thought it was real as a kid and freaked out.
Wait, am I the only one who heard him say “and I oop”? I was laughing so hard.

So what about Hagrid's and the "Looks like you've lost power" spike and the drop??
Coaster Labs That was so cool!!!! Took me totally by surprise.
Yeah except when I went on it it actually stopped we were turning a corner right as we left the small cave with Hagrid and that work thing in it then we were turning the corner as it stopped and we slowly fell backwards it took forever for it to go again it also stopped at the part where you see the dogs IT ALSO broke hagrids voice lines there was no music and no hagrid
It did go again tho
I even watched POVs before I went on it and didn’t pick up on the sudden drop! Totally caught me by surprise!
I remember going on the mummy ride back in 2009, I got stuck sitting on the edge next to one of the scary props. I remember being very surprised with that little scene and the ceiling full of flames before jetting is off into the darkness again.
I remember once in Everest, the broken track (the one that is bent) was missing. I was genuinely concerned because I though that stopped the vehicle, so I panicked a little.
Yeah it doesn’t, but I would be concerned too lol. But I doubt they would let you on the ride if it was broken. Then again, I don’t even know if they check the ride or not.
@@scarlett.yuhhhh it's a little foolish to think they don't check the ride, this is Disney we are talking about, not some county fair hahah
I know i'm incredibly late but I only just remembered my favourite intentional malfunction in a disney theme park. I haven't been to a lot of different disney location but I have been to a few. But my favourite intentional malfunction is at the disney theme park closest to me. Disneyland Paris. On a ride (I forget the name of it) you are taken around a small mountain with electricity poles and flammable tanks. right before this intentional malfunction happens, something will be said along the lines of "Those electricity poles shouldn't fall over and we are perfectly safe." A few seconds later the poles fall over, knocking the flammable barrels down the mountain into a fire which leads to a big explosion. this explosion also knocks over a water tank seeing as there is now fire EVERYWHERE and it puts it out whilst also making all of the riders quite wet. And then the barrels roll back up the small mountain and go right back into place. I still don't understand what the ride was about to this day but I still love the intentional malfunction.
One time I was on Harry Potter and the Escape From Gringotts and it broke down so we went through most of the ride with the lights on! It was really cool!
This is my name| same!
Just curious if you have a video? That would be awesome!
AppleandMeep sadly I don’t
I was on Escape from Gringotts when it broke down too. The ride was going fine until all the screens went dark, but the audio kept going. Then, when the audio for the scene we were in stopped, the screens came on and did the scene, but with no audio, and the ride vehicles began to spin in place in slow circles. It was weird. When the ride finally resumed after about ten minutes of spinning and stopping and spinning and stopping, the audio was like 5-10 seconds behind the visuals. But hey, at least we got a free fast pass out of it and got to experience the Spinning Teacups of Gringotts!!!
Brenna W. What happed to me was the ride stopped and the lights turned on and the audio and screens were playing. That meant when the cars spin the show a screen ours didn’t. That was funny because the water effect caught us off guard because we were facing forward and the screen was beside us so the water hit us on our sides. Also during the launch section when you see Voldemort when we were suppose to launch nothing happened. The screen played again and that time we launched. It was a fun and strange experience but luckily we got fast passes and went straight back onto the ride!
What if rex’s “malfunction” is him having Vietnam flashbacks?

As a former Studio Tour worker, the amount of times Earthquake wasn't functioning properly was crazy. We were lucky if we had a full day where it didn't break down XD
Can I fix my tv by hitting it with a hammer just like the guy hitting the generator to fix Rex?

“Now is a good time to say goodbye to your loved ones, just in case.”
Idk why I had to point that out but yeah.
I've been to the Studio Tour before for my 9nth birthday, and I FREAKED out on the earthquake part
12:38 yes and it scared the living- thing- out of me because I was forced on the ride and I already hated fast rides so-
I rode the Mummy the first time the year it opened. I can't remember if it had had it's official grand opening yet or not. I loved the fake-out part. I ended up riding it so many times cause my friends and I could almost walk on to it going through the single rider line. I got to go ride it again this past year and still love it even if it was crowded enough that I couldn't get through the line as quickly (being Christmas might have had something to do with it).

The mummy is for sure on my top three rides of all time. The first time I rode it I was definitely convinced it was done. The effects and thrill on that ride is amazing!
7:23 the tour guide did reallllyy well to capture the effect, because other tour guides would just be like AHHHHHH and that would just sound fake 😂
Finally! Someone mentioned the bird on Expedition Everest! I thought I was going crazy.
Strudle Strudle that’s how i feel about the bridge on the safari. i remembered it happening once and every other time i went on it it didn’t happen. i know it was real!
That Revenge of the Mummy scene is so amazing, especially since you basically get thrown into a room of fire right afterwards.
7:18 never been on this ride but that looks incredible also super impressive scene 👏
I remember I was on the mummy ride with my dad and oh boi was I scared. I thought ride was really short when it happened and was a little disappointed when it stopped, then the mummy crashed and I screamed"F*** OFF" and was swatting the air. That was the first time my dad heard me cuss. And everyone was laughing at my reaction. And I was laughing to. All in all 10/10
When my mom and I rode Hagrids when it opened (we waited like 45 minutes because it was cloudy so almost everyone left because they thought it would rain. Nope. Just cloudy weather.) and the part with the short drop got me and my mom and probably everyone on the bikes/passenger cars lol
It's amazing when that happens. I just grin to myself while people leave knowing that it's Florida. It'll maybe drizzle for 5 minutes and go back to sunshine.

first time and only time on mummy was last year and i knew there was a fake out before i rode because when i got into that room i was like wow this is really hot.....this must be the fire room but i loved it
I remember going on the Mummy ride and remember feeling disappointed that the ride was already over when I got to that part. Everyone on the vehicle was laughing and talking about how much fun they had. I was actually prepared to stand up to get off when I realized that the ride wasn't over yet. I wasn't the only one on the ride vehicle that did that. The fire on the ceiling was really cool though. It got pretty hot in there. Overall, it was a really fun ride and I'd definitely go on it again.

If something is intentional, it's not a malfunction. It's intended to be like this, which means it's not a malfunction.
I don’t think “Top 7 Fake Mess-ups” has the same ring to it

Omg the mummy ride was TERRIFYING the first time 😂😂I had no idea what was going on
First time I rode Expedition Everest, it legitimately broke down at the track switch. we were there for a solid two minutes, but they got us going again. Didn't realize it had broken down until I rode it a few minutes later (single rider line is awesome BTW) and we were at the switch for just a few seconds.

I remember my first time on the Mummy. It was last spring break, and I invited my friend. My friend had already went, so she told me about the fake-out. I went on the ride, and noticed it right away! But she didn’t come, she was watching the parade outside of the Jimmy Fallon ride.
The Star Wars one reminds me about the time I messed with stormtroopers and they were like “bruh”
Hearing that intro made me realize how long it’s been since I’ve watched a TPM video.
The mummy has a special place in my heart. When I was a young one, my school got a back stage tour of the mummy with the lights on. I was so in awe! It’s been my favorite coaster since.
I remember when I was like 11 or something I was terrified of going backward on roller coasters, to the point where this was very well known with my family. So when we got to the top of Expedition Everest, after a few seconds of realizing what's going to happen my brother turns around says "I'm so sorry" and we zoom back. I haven't ridden that ride since out of pure spite.
12:42 when I first went on this ride i thought it was over so I went to stand up and i panicked because my restraint wouldn’t go up.
The last one was the one I was thinking olt and The sounds effect.
I can't believe they took out the poachers!! That was one of my favorite parts!
Awwww
I remember my first time on expedition Everest and while we were going up I was in tears bc I hated tall rides and I knew it was gonna go backwards but the worst thing at the time was I was in the front so when we were at the top I was crying when I saw the rails and I didn’t know when we would go back so I kept crying but after the ride it wasn’t that bad and now when I look back at that time I laugh and I love tall rides now
One time on the new Star Wars Rise Of The Resistance i was in line and the ride stopped and me and my family waited there for sOooooooo long
