Danny Devito is such an underrated performer. His role of Phil showed a great range of realism, comedy, musical talent, and even drama more towards the end of the film. He gave a character who could have easily turned into a stock Disney sidekick and gave him a lot of very serious depth. Hats off to Frank Reynolds!

It's mostly because it's not a good representation of greek mythology. For example, Hercules is a roman god; not a greek one. As a movie, I found it really enjoyable. As an historical representation, I found it dull and stupid. It depends on how you want to look at it.

What I think is interesting is that it's implied that Phil was the trainer to Achilles (in the mythology it's Chiron, of course, but I think Chiron was also the mentor of Hercules) and yet he complains that none of them have ever gone on to be great. When Achilles is arguably the single most important Greek heros there is.

What I think is interesting is that it's implied that Phil was the trainer to Achilles (in the mythology it's Chiron, of course, but I think Chiron was also the mentor of Hercules) and yet he complains that none of them have ever gone on to be great.
When Achilles is arguably the single most important Greek heros there is.
Achilles was arrogant and it cost him his life...not exactly a "Great hero"

In the real mythology it would be more surprising if Zeus WASN'T Hercules father. Since he basically fathered like 95% of all Greek heroes/demigods with various mortal and immortal women.
Even then it would still work. Just imagine how many wannabe "heroes" came to Phil for training, claiming to be the son/daughter of this god or that goddess. Until he gets struck by lightning he has no reason to believe that Hercules isn't just another schmuck claiming to be a deity's child

i would think the goddess of love aphritite (or however u spell it) would have the most demigod children. after all she sleeps with everyone. but if i remember right i think it was hermes and dionysus that had the most demigod children. after all didnt the big 3 (zeus, poisidon, and hades) eventually make a deal that they would have no more demigod children because they were too powerful or something?
