- My car was stolen by a scammer who hacked a legitimate Turo account, and used stolen credit card information to rent my car on Turo.

Great story. I don’t wait on Turo, I’m in DC. I’m a former cop too. I don’t wait. I give the renter 6 hours after the return time. If they don’t return it within the 6 hours after, I go get my car! I 😂 at the messages that say somebody stole my car. Nah champ, I took my car back because you didn’t return it on time, and you didn’t communicate that you needed an extension. The car is always trashed too. Turo calls me and ask me all the time why did you get your car, and I tell them, it’s my car. Belongs to my company. It’s not Turo’s car. Great story tho. I would recommend don’t wait on Turo to make decisions about your car. BTW I’ve never had any issues with renting out the same car after I got it back. I have Turo check the guest out and I move on. They don’t like it, but if the renter isn’t communicating that they’ll be late or need an extension, I consider it theft. Not abiding by the reservation that the guest made themselves sounds like a scam to me. I don’t wait for Turo.

Damn this was a wild story. I just had one of my cars stolen too. The renter left the key in my car and an enterprising youth grabbed it. Its been two months. Never recovered the car or caught the thief. Turo paid out the claim and I basically broke even after everything was said and done. I've got a 30 car fleet and this was my first stolen car after 1000 trips. It can happen any time. But you are so right about the scammers and their routine. Same day bookings, preferring not to meet, and always late with a bunch of excuses. Glad you got your shit back!

Oweeeee what a Story! I stopped running BMW's years ago as they were thief magnets. Turo trust and safety is weak, smart on you taking initiative. BRILLIANT on having 2 GPS units in the vehicle. I have had cars get jacked and I always got em back because of GPS.
Yes, I was very underwhelmed with TURO’s Trust & Safety Team in this instance. I’m with you on no more BMW’s, my biggest pet peeve w/ those cars is not the scammers, but all the wannabe NASCAR drivers that go 125 mph plus, and all the hard braking and rough driving they do. It also attracts a lot of party people that like to smoke and trash the inside. 🙄

My strategy to avoid this scenario is to video record the pickup with a separate vehicle. I park another car in such a way that the dash camera records the renter during the pickup process. This evidence is golden.
You are hella smart, Im in Seattle and just got a BMW X5 to start Turo GO...I dont want to deal with the foolery I have 1000 monthly payment....I cant sit for months while my shits took... Crazy Turo knowing what you communicated to them wanted you to wait 24 hours... I gotta not get happy of every rental and really look at them suspect... might lose some folks over asking for ID to hold up but better in the long run... Good lookin out!
Thank you for sharing your story. Do you know how many people like myself who are either on the platform already as a host or thinking about getting into it worry about these things? And having the wisdom on how to navigate a situation like is priceless. Someone like myself who is new on a platform, I am a very naïve person I could see myself waiting on T&S to do their job and that could be after 24 hours 48 hours or 72 hours and by then a lot of damage could be done to your vehicle. Your video is truly a gift please keep making more of these type of videos or whatever just any type of knowledge you have just on your experience on the platform whether good or bad we want to know all of it.

Hey Tera, thanks for subscribing! I should do more videos on Turo (I have a little over 500 trips as of now). I personally do not offer unlimited mileage. I'm on the east coast and a renter drove to Las Vegas in one of my cars. She rented the car for 10 days, so she was allotted 2,000 miles for her trip. She drove a total of 5,036 miles which means she drove an additional 3,036 miles on her trip. While trips like these are extremely rare, keep in mind that it can happen, and if you do decide to offer unlimited mileage just make sure you are charging enough for the daily mileage to cover all the depreciation and wear and tear on your car. I'd probably only offer unlimited mileage if I had an older car (that definitely wasn't a luxury or premium car) that was not worth that much, or possibly if it was super slow and I needed income, but I would have to REALLY REALLY need the money to offer unlimited mileage on my newer cars. A good tip is to send a message to the guest when the trip is booked and say he take a picture of your id and then another picture of yourself holding up your drivers license. I never had any problems from people doing it. If had people cancel which is good because those were probably scammers.
What stops the host from then asking for an SSN card or birth certificate? Since we're adding verification steps outside of turo's approved workflow... (Serious question).

I agree. If your car is stolen it’s pretty much on you to do most of the work retrieving it. A GPS is a must in this business.

I had a similar situation with my Mazda! And same thing wait 24 hours, turo is awful when it comes to investigating, they are very Robotic… alot of guest when they start acting weird you are not gaining access… turo is very careless… Turo roadside service is also is horrible!! Turo wants us to be the ones to verify license like we are experience verifiers.. turo you have to protect your cars all turo want is 25% of your profits!! They dont want pay out for accidents … deductible is so high…

Smart you had that backup GPS... what it hardwired in the car? I need to consider that. Then again, I don't have high end cars on Turo.
I had to go retrieve my Hyundai Sonata from a guest that went MIA. The guest wasn’t responding to calls or texts. So a GPS is a must no matter what kind of car. Just get the plug-in GPS, doesn’t have to be hardwired.

I never wait, I go get my car. They tried to tell me to wait 24hrs. So im supposed to sit and wait? Yes right! If you’re late and you haven’t contacted me, I’m giving you about 2-3 hrs and I’m in route.

I'm a Turo host and I've had cars not returned (aka stolen) 4 times. I finally decided to get a tracker. I got a Bouncie tracker, you just put it into the OBD port. I only have one tracker for my 8 cars. How I use the tracker; if a guest has a short rental and is a local, I put the tracker in the car. In my experience, the people who take your car are local drug addicts or just sketchy. They PLAN on stealing your car, it's not a mistake. So they book really short trips. It's true, they could notice tracker in OBD port and toss it. But the tracker isn't that obvious, on most cars you have to poke around under the dash with a flash-light to find it. I'm betting these junkies aren't that smart. Bouncie is $77 and then $8/month. Well worth it in my book.
One thing I notice with scammers is there is a sense of urgency........ apply this to all scammers. And they also fit requirements for narcissistic behavior ......

Had nearly same experience my first day. Except Turo called me ahead of time and said for me to not give me keys to the renter. Name on Turo was Trap; next day name changed to Eli P. Now it’s something else completely different.

This why each car get 2 to 3 trackers and kill switchs I would of chopped the car off soon he turn the gps off

I am a host and I require a DL and a selfie of them with the car. I wont delay in chasing someone that has taken my car if I think it would be stolen. Then when they park it, I would jump in and drive it straight to the PD. So far I have had no problems.
Wait 24 hours then they commit a crime within 24 hours and police come knocking at your door and now you have some explaining to do. I give them 30 minutes per Turo guidelines. If there’s no communication and 30 minutes late thats an automatic police report for me no exceptions. Thankfully I’ve been on the platform for close to 2 years and haven’t had a theft yet. I consistently ask for the licenses and selfie of them holding the licenses which is also written in Turo’s guidelines.
…umm i would sent him turo’s number thats between the renter and turo. I never pick up guest calls either its always through text or the app just in case some guest try to be slick and take advantage.
I just posted one my cars on turo I think I just take it off I don’t want to worry about tickets violations or damage to the suv for get it
You’ll be reimbursed for the tickets and tolls as long as you upload photo proof of them. As for damage, that may very well happen sooner or later but As long as you file a claim within the given time frame and took clear before and after photos of the damage you’ll be okay.

GPS Tracker locate the car Kill switch turn it off report to police and TURO. Reimbursement for anything that's damage or stolen.

@@KarelleDIY they asked for touch less pick up. They drove an extra 300+ miles , trashed the car and dropped it off very late and in a random location. I had to use my tracker to find car.
A month later I get a text from the person I thought rented it. She was caught off guard when she viewed her Turo account and noticed she wasn’t able to book.
Insurance companies are fine with all this? I’m having trouble seeing this as a risk worthy profitable venture.
The insurance companies Turo use seem to be fine with it. There is a huge demand for car sharing and I’m assuming the insurance companies are willing to take the risk because the profits must be there? And in a situation like mine hopefully Turo has improved on their web and app security since then. But then again im not an insurance analyst…idk 🤷🏽
Something similar happened to me and I was actually kind of rewarded for what happened. What u share the compensation part of this from turo to you pls.
Turo did compensate me. I believe they gave me $500 extra for what happened. I have to go back and check. But my car was gone for 2 weeks, and that rental was only for 2 days. The towing company Turo hired to bring my car back was horrible and took a long time to bring it back. The interior of the car was such a mess as well. Weed and ashes everywhere as well as trash. I also had a flat completely flat tire so I had to buy a new run flat which Turo paid for, but that $500 really wasn’t worth it for me, not for the entire 2 weeks my car was out of commission, I will admit it did help with the mental anguish though lol.
@@KarelleDIY yeah I guess 500 was not worth it for the time wasted and also the whole stress that you went through on my end the car was at 2022 Honda Civic I had gotten it only 2 weeks prior to the theft.
But I got close to $1,000 because I reported cleaning also smoking replacement for a key replacement for a tire which I had the tire and wheel protection so I was compensated for it but I did not pay for it, on my end my guest left the car on while she was at Walgreens and when she came out the car wasn't there the car was found next day in the middle of the road with a flat tire no gas super 30 and was in the tow yard for those 20 days and 20 days later it was when I got notice from the tow yard to pay almost $800 to bring it out. Which tour paid for aside from the $1,000 that I got for everyone else
@@hiskyusa Ahhh yes, I did receive a cleaning fee and smoking fee as well, but I didn’t include that in the extra $500 they gave me. The grand total I received from the scammer’s trip was over $1000. I think of the $500 Turo compensated me for was for pain and suffering lol, and that sucks about your brand new Civic. You should get a GPS if you’re going to rent it on Turo a lot. It will save you so many headaches.

@@KarelleDIY If you never meet/met the person then you have no information to give to law enforcement. But if you meet them face to face you now have a description of the person you handed your car over to.
@@ms.peewee504 Descriptions don’t matter if they have a fake license. You don’t have a name. You have a general description of someone, and many other people will most likely Have the same physical characteristics. I never saw the person that took my car and yet he still got arrested.
When you get to the point where you have 5 or more cars being rented out on Turo (especially if you have some in different locations) then maybe you’ll understand why you can’t meet everyone face-to-face.
