Drill press comment here: There is an optimum drill bit rotation speed based on the thickness of the metal, the type of metal, and the size of the drill bit. I don't have that chart memorized either, but generally slower is better (it prevents heating and blunting of the drill bit.) The cut material should come off in a long thin spiral, like we saw. The other factor is the amount of pressure; a sharp drill bit should only require enough pressure to maintain the spiral cut material. Oh, starting with smaller bit and continuing with multiple passes with increasingly larger bits up to the desired size is the best way to preventing dull bit and increased frustration. Once you dull a bit, it is useless until it is sharpened. Too much pressure on a dull bit will heat it beyond the temper of the bit and ruin the bit. Apologies if you know all this but perhaps someone may find it useful.

    • @TinyShinyHome
      @TinyShinyHome  Před 24 dny +4

Yep, all good info for sure :) We didn't really get into that in the video, but we did have to adjust the speed based on the material type and thickness. Also cutting oil makes it smoke like something's wrong but helps a lot!

Living on earth as humanoids is 24/7 education. In US what's called "education " is mostly indoctrination into capitalism, where you sell your labor to others for cut rates and pay taxes for the privilege.
I look at every chore as a unique learning experience...and assess its real labor value to make it seem like I made money.
In the aviation industry, I never made over $35hr, but my labor was charged at over $165hr.
So when I do something on my rv or vehicles, I can value it at $165hr

    Obviously
A little late but, if you drill a pilot hole first it will make the larger drill bit last much longer...maybe .25" pilot.
If you look at the tip of the largest bit you will notice a flat tip with different cutting angles. Thats the part of the bit that works the hardest...having to cut thru metal with more force.
I learned this doing 3 decades of aviation fabrication.
Both Boeing and Northrup Grumman told me, I had an analytical mind...it's a blessing and curse all rolled into one.
My dad was a machinist at RXR and he raised me to approach everything from several perspectives. It's served me well. But nagged me occasionally.

Would it be easier, faster, and better drainage if you overlap the rafters resting on top of the shipping container? You also wouldn’t have to have the brackets and welding. Just a thought. Everything y’all do has amazing results so i’m not trying to be critical, but would hate to see you go through all that extra trouble. Maybe, I’m confused!😂

Make sure to watch the first video in the roof process to understand why we're building it this way :) czcams.com/video/UnUFdC5YvOA/video.html

Will you be putting a heap of solar panels on that awning? It faces south, right?

It shall be covered in panels!

Would it have been easier to cut a horizontal cut when notching the posts? Less chiselling?

Strong enough not to fall and squish the goats.
Wonder about the ancient Japanese guy who discovered that external burning creates longer lasting wood. How did he find out?
Did he have to use scorched wood because that's all he had, and then discovered, "Hey that lasted a long time?"
    It's a puzzlement. 🤔

Sorry for the off topic. Did you try work in your surface plaster a guzey fabric soaked in runy clay (or runy cement)? It would prevent cracking. Also the leen seed oil shoud be aplied steeming hot and it woks better in clay heavy mix. I can link videos if you like. I am not the expert but I am interested in the topic.

In the winter you may want the sun to hit that southern wall in the summer you may want to block the sun. That's how earthships work. I don't know how you could do that but maybe a moveable structure

In this case we'd rather have additional shade and shelter year round that will protect all the windows and doors on the south side. Also the solar panels need to be tilted towards the south.
