Joao Borralho I understand your thoughts. The speaking test is for both students - academic and GT. Because it is such a large test, IELTS need to vary the topics and question considerably. These types of questions are testing a language function which is to compare two time periods so for that reason they are used. It's the same with other types of questions, such as future speculations. This is another IELTS question: "How do you think sport will develop in the future?". It's an awful question but it serves to test the ability to talk using future forms on the given topic. It's a shame that the answers require some imagination - I completely agree. "Do you think people read more today than they did in the past?"
What kind of question is that?? How do we know?
Joao Borralho This is a really common question in IELTS speaking part 1 and part 3. Comparing past and present situations. You must decide your opinion. Personally I would say that less people read today because more people find entertainment through technology whereas in the past reading was the most common form of relaxation. That's just my opinion. You need to decide your own.
This type of question can appear in most topics. "Do you think people are healthier today than in the past?" or "Do you think more people travel abroad than in the past?" or "Do you think more people do exercise today than they did in the past?".

IELTS Liz Well, I noticed that forcing the examinee to be... 'creative' is quite common in IELTS and not just on the speaking module. Those who lack this 'ability' are definetely in trouble I'm affraid. Frankly I don't see the reason for this as being creative in our social interactions is way beyond from what is being assessed in this exam. I would understand if the examples involve practical and useful situations, like going to a bank to open an account or calling a landlord to make a tenancy arrangement, in fact, the IELTS is pretty much realted with immigration so practical situations would be rather suitable, however the criteria seems to be otherwise.
But thanks for your help anyway!
But I don't see a way to avoid it if language is to be fully tested. The key is being aware of these types of questions and preparing for them with ideas and language.
Luckily you are not assessed on your ideas. You are only assessed on your ability to use language well. That at least is one plus :)
Good luck with your studies. Let me know if you have any other concerns.
