In this video, I will discuss how to effectively wire mismatched solar panels. This guide is ideal for those who have solar panels with different wattage and are seeking the most efficient wiring method.
We begin with an essential overview of series and parallel wiring configurations. In series wiring, the voltages of the solar panels are combined while maintaining a constant current. For instance, connecting two 20V, 5-amp panels in series results in an output of 40 volts at 5 amps. On the other hand, parallel wiring focuses on adding the current from each panel, keeping the voltage unchanged. For example, the same 20V, 5-amp panels, when wired in parallel, produce 20 volts at 10 amps.
The choice between series and parallel wiring depends significantly on whether the panels have similar voltages or currents. Panels with the same current but differing voltages are best wired in series, where the combined voltage increases while the current remains consistent. Conversely, panels sharing the same voltage but with varying currents should be wired in parallel, resulting in a higher cumulative current.
To illustrate these concepts, I will walk you through examples involving 100W and 200W solar panels, showing how their combined power output varies based on the wiring method. We will also simulate a scenario with three solar panels of different ratings - 100W, 88W, and 108W - and calculate their total power output in both series and parallel configurations. Our calculations will reveal that parallel wiring is often more advantageous, especially when considering wire thickness for higher currents.
Furthermore, for those with a variety of panels looking to connect to a single charge controller, this video offers practical advice and calculations to determine the best wiring method. In cases where voltage and current differences are significant, using multiple charge controllers may be the optimal solution.
We will also delve into hybrid connections, using an example with two 50W panels and one 100W panel. This section demonstrates how combining panels in series and then in parallel can achieve a balanced output, aligning with the panels' total wattage.

I have 2 panels just for the cloudy days. Is the voltage difference to big? Should I use bypass diode between the panels? I have MBR2545 schottky 45V, 2x15A diode.

@@cleversolarpower I need to drop my voltage input to charge my portable battery and connecting my panels in series first gives me a total voltage that exceeds my input voltage requirement for the battery.
For whatever reason there is not much info on connecting parallel first, but from what I've read, 2 panels in parallel provided better energy output if one panel is partially shaded compared to 2 panels in series and one of them being partially shaded.

It depends if your battery gets empty. So your load decides if it's underpowered or not. That's why we start with a load analysis first before sizing solar panels, batteries, etc...

As you are the best teacher I am going to ask you a simple question , or better I explain to you what I am doing and tell me if it`s good ?
I have 3 solar panels each gives 18V / 1.6A that I put in parallel to have the max current out of them to charge a lead battery .
So as lead batteries should be charge at 14 .5 V max , Then if add a solar panel that gives 15V / some .5 A ( I really don`t its amperage ) cause I don`t have ma meter to check the amps out of it and also nothing written on it .
Adding that panel to the others will drop the voltage to 15 and add let say 0.5A which will normally gives me 15 V /5.3A .
Will this be ok to charge a battery without damaging it , if I don`t use any solar charge controller .I have a switch to cut the solar power on the battery when not in use for the moment .
Will use a 1,000W inverter for experience on a computer with the monitor + a fan + a led lamp of 20 w at night .
the battery is 12V/ 74AHR .I will change that battery to one of 90 AHR as soon as possible .
Will this work and for how many hrs all this will run before it run out of power ?
Thanks in advance dear teacher 😊

    • @cleversolarpower
      @cleversolarpower  Před 5 měsíci

Don't put the panels in parallel if you have an MPPT. It's the same power rating if you place them in series or parallel. You need to use a charge controller. The charge needs to stop if the battery is full. Check out my video about how many batteries for a 1,000W inverter.
