The last clip in this video is the moonwalk. Mike misspoke when asked the name of the backslide. Seriously, that’s LITERALLY the entire point of the short. In the 70s it premiered on Soul Train by a dance group called Eclipse and that move was known as the Glide.

I was doing the back slide when I was kid back in the 70s. I never understood why people were calling it the moonwalk.
He wasn't the first to do it but Michael made it iconic.

@@jmorrisey79 I have seen many movies with him including documentaries. Even videos of him and MJ practicing. I agree that the moonwalk was around before mj and boogaloo shrimp. But boogaloo shrimp inspired MJ to take it to the next level.

It was called the backslide and that's what is known as the moonwalk is with Michael Jackson's video was named after so a lot of the younger people call his dance the moonwalk as a result of that, but we never from the generation that grew up watching Michael Jackson ever called it the moonwalk
There's a video of Buggaloo at Michaels Crib in the dance studio and it's in his documentary.
VEEEEEERY TRUE ! Many of us OLDER dinosaurs remember long before Michael Jackson popularized what's now known as the "Moon Walk" - we called it the "Back slide" WaaaaaaaaaY back in the day - & yes, there were different variants of it.
And it was occasionally done mainly by only some very gifted black entertainers. Soul singer Stephanie Mills' husband, Jeffrey Daniels from the group Shalamar (with Jodey Watley) is actually the one who taught Michael Jackson to do the "Moon Walk". Though Michael gave him no credit for it.

Stephin Fletcher did the moonwalk in the 1930's too. And he was one of Hollywood's first black millionaires back then.🌹
It was Stepin Fetchit. He was my great grandmother’s uncle. She would tell me how her mom would take her to see his movies and tell her about him. She passed in 2022.

Thank you for this clarification of a piece of dance history. I've been aware of Bill Baily doing the tap slide" in the 1950s during his performances. I'll never forget MJ's introduction to a worldwide audiences during the MOTOWN finale tribute performance. Everyone loved it and loved him even more.
