Does anyone know what sludge actually is? My late bro had a late 60z ford 3/4ton for hauling trailers. It had grey sludge level between valves. After a cleaning, the valves were not hanging up.
I'm no expert but I think it's a combination of things. Mostly oil breakdown from combustion blow-by past the rings, fuel dilution, moisture, lack of timely OCIs, short trips,.etc. I remember the older engines from the '60s through '80s used to always be slugged up. I took a few apart back then and the sludge was so thick under the valve covers you could scrape it with a putty knife. 5K oil change intervals with a synthetic oil and it doesn't seem to happen these days. I'll pin your question so that it sits on top.
It's comforting to open an Oil Filter box & see the Filter wrapped in plastic👍🤠🏜
Everything about Fleetguard is quality. I’ve also used Fleetguard fuel filters which are built just like their oil filters…like a tank.
Not a fair fight. The STP comes from the Fram school of cheap filters with cardboard endcaps and the Fleetguard has metal endcaps, my preference of a coil spring and synthetic media. The only question on the Fleetguard is why the media has those indents.
That fleet guard look like my moms cleaning towels🤭
Good video between these two filters. I would have to agree with others that this STP blue filter is an older version. I don't see this filter here at Autozone anymore. It does look like a rebadged Fram. To be honest I still have one that I never used because it did not look very good to me. Seems like these companies choose multiple companies to make their filters. The Filterguard looks like a very good filter. The little holes you see in the filter media are actually small heat weld points to join different layers of filter media together. Where I used to work we made our own filters for emulsion that consisted of four layers of synthetic material. We used a heated die on a roller that joined the different layers together. If you have an exacto knife you can actually separate the different layers on the piece you cut out for the thickness measurement. Just pick at the cut end to separate the layers.
Hi David,
Thanks for Sharing👍
How nice of that viewer to send it to You! Great review! 👍
Thanks, Ella👍

The STP goes for about $2 for most commercial customers, you also get it for about $2 or $3 with most oil bundles. Makes sense why the construction is so cheap
Great video Whip! The Fleetguard has stratpore technology, the best filter media imo, it is very strong and not restrictive, it also filters down to very small contaminants. I use Fleetguard for oil and fuel filters and they are extremely well made. The only downside is they are hard to find locally so I order them online. STP makes decent filters but this comparison wasn't even close! Fleetguard for the 🏆
Thanks, Cody👍
Great job Pete as usual 👍
Thanks, Dwayne👍
The STP oil filter was actually better than I thought it would be. I was honestly expecting the STP filter to have a thin section of media and a huge spring. It's a blue Fram filter. I've used Fram plenty of times and no problems. Machinery doesn't know the difference between oil Brands; the consumer does and has the pocket full of money.
Great Video Whip, always excited to see the new videos
Thanks Wrenching👍
After decades of changing my own oil I have had an oil filter failure. A Wix made in USA filter leaked like a sieve at the crimp. Only OEM Toyota filters for now on.
Sorry to hear that, Thanks for Sharing👍
STP is crap. Good video Pete.
The fleet guard doesn't need a metal mesh with a core like that.
Thanks, John👍
Having worked for AutoZone I find it hard to believe that there was an S2 that old sitting on the shelf. Maybe it was my area of Delaware but we couldn’t keep them on the shelf.
Hi whip great info have a great weekend 👍
Thanks, Christina
Have a Great Weekend also.👍
I always had good luck with fleet guard filters when I had my F350 with the Navistar engine. I have to say this one really wasn’t a fair fight the STP looks like it fell on the floor at the fram assembly plant.
Stp looking good on filter material...then I saw cardboard end caps... I am a napa gold guy but that fleet guard looks really good
No Boing-Boing...😭😭
😂😁😁
Lol. Yea I missed it too
LOL
Another great video Pete!! Thanks as always for your insight!!
Wishing everyone a Safe Memorial Day weekend!! Let us not forget.. Some gave all, all gave some!!! From a Very Proud Army 🇺🇸🫡Veteran, Take Care and Stay Safe!!
Hi Steven,
Thanks and Thank You for Serving👍👍
Have a Great Weekend👍
I think that with the Fleetguard's filtering media, those "holes" are actually points where they heated the element so it doesn't separate from itself. I question if fluid could flow through there regardless of the thickness.
Since Fleetguards are mostly made for diesel engines, them holes might be there for soot purposes.
Exactly, the holes are that attachment points for the screen backing points
A good review comparison, Pete! Between the two, I would prefer the Fleetguard. Always learning from your channel. 👍 TFS Beautiful day today, enjoy! Merri :)
Thank Merri,
Have a Great Weekend👍
I'm going with the Fleetguard
Better filter media, metal end caps, better overall build quality and design. Just seems like a better filter all around.
Nice review 👍
...missed the ADBV flip test and the boing 👍
Thanks, drum👍
I use the STP filters quite often. I've noticed that with STP different models of filters are made by various different companies. Most of them look like Champ filters with the plastic core. That S2 looks like a stinkin' Fram. And sometimes they sneak a chinese filter in on you. I bought a couple S16 STP filters and they were the chinese variety. I guess that's part of the excitement of an STP oil change, the suspense of finding out which cheapo filter they snuck inside your box.

Can you explain to us what 100% 24 microns means or 95% 20 microns thanks
A google search can explain it a lot better than I can or try this link. Thanks www.onallcylinders.com/2015/05/29/ask-away-with-jeff-smith-micron-ratings-and-what-they-mean-for-your-oil-filter/
Another great video. Thank you. The STP doesn't look too well made and reminds me of the Fram filters with the felt end caps.
Thank You👍
Not felt.
Not paper or cardboard either. If this filter is truly made by Fram, as some here have speculated, it’s an engineered fiber. All it has to do is stay glued to the ends of the pleats to seal them so the oil must pass through the filter media.
I agree, it’s not a good looking filter.
Those little holes 🕳 are where it's pressed onto the backside of the screen, they are usually blocked 🚫 by the screen strand it contacts .....
Great video
STP is manufactured by champion Laboratories. While fleet-guard is manufactured by Cummings filtration.
Thanks👍
I should send you a Subaru OEM filter and a Wix-XP for the Subaru 2.5L engine
@@wildmanofthewynooch7028 I'm working on a Subaru filter as we speak.👍
@@WhipCityWrencher okay 👍 just so you know it’s made by Honeywell who makes Fram
@@wildmanofthewynooch7028 Hi Wildman,
As far as I know, Honeywell used to make them a while back but Trico owns them now check out this website. Thanks. www.rvandplaya.com/who-makes-fram-oil-filters-synthetic/
When it comes down to brass tacks the fleetgaurd would be the better filter in my combined 44 years being a fleet mechanic for 2 different companies never had an issue with FG filters which also luber finer ! not really a fan of either filter after seeing the autopsy ! have a great memorial day weekend "whip" 👍
Hi Scotty, Thanks!
Have a Great Memorial day weekend also👍
Curious about the logic behind the holes on Fleetguard.
Not exactly an apples to apples comparison, imo. STP is basically the WM Super Tech ST series filter that can be purchased off the shelf for ~$3.50. The Fleetguard shows most places ~$23, perhaps somewhat less elsewhere. First Brands chose Fram to make this STP, most blue cans same as ST are ecores made by Champ. This Fleetguard a good filter. Some you've posted have been made by M&H Purolator. Cost being no object with heavy duty use, Fleetguard the choice. Thanks for vid
You're Welcome faxmen09👍
.dang stp,i was rootin 4 ya.fleetgaurd wins..thanks 4 this video..
You're Welcome Ivan👍
The STP comes from the "anything to save a buck" school of thought. I will never knowingly use a filter with fiber end caps.
Fluid tend to flow where there are less restricted area/path, those hole seems has less restricted material, wonder what the reason those holes to be there...
Those holes 🕳 are restricted by the mounting points to the screen backing,,probably pressed on against the screen using sonic welding points ,probably nothing getting passed thru those holes
good 2 know
Thanks, Jay👍

Just slapped a stp s2 filter on my 03' taurus wagon (3.0l 24v DOHC duratec v6) first oil change since i got it, less than 3k miles ago. It had a valvoline v0-88 on it, and i had bought an stp filter # s(cant remeber the numbers, but can write em here later) when i first got the car, after looking up what filter SHOULD fit, but the threads were FAR too small to fit. Does anyone know of any filters that i could use that arent the stp s2, or the v0-88? Also great vid!
Thanks,
Just go to Rockauto they show you a list of filters that fit your vehicle.www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/ford,2003,taurus,3.0l+v6+dohc,1415203,engine,oil+filter,5340
@@WhipCityWrencher thx!
You car could have a 3/4 thread. The S2 is a 22mm thread. Try a PH3600/ PO241.
The STP is surprisingly cheap looking. And now their gold version has a nitrile rubber anti drainback valve. Which isn’t good bc of it’s high price.

No way is that cellulose media on the Fleetguard. It's synthetic.
What's the deal with Fleetguard and those dimples on the filter media? Reminds of toilet paper.😂
Same here 😂
Looks like Champ Labs ordered a cheap Orange can of death FRAM & had it painted blue 😁..⚠️ "AvoidtheorangecanAvoidtheFRAM !" even if its blue ....I'll stick with the Fleetguard
Not really. First Brands, parent of Champ and Fram makes the call on who makes which filter. In this specific case, the STP S2 is made by Fram, thus the fiber endcaps. Most other STP blue cans are Champ made ecore filters, most using metal caps. Basically, same as SuperTech ST line.
@@faxmen09 the new FRAM endurance filter is definitely a Champ Labs built filter, the rolls are reversed with the STP S2 it's definitely a FRAM, First Brands is mixing them up on both brands, AC Delco had issues & complaints when the FRAM guts ended up in there filters a few years ago & made them go back to the original E Core with metal endcaps & revised the part #'s
@@daewooparts No argument on Champ Labs made Fram FE, but not the point of the previous reply. Fram make topic STP S2, most like Super Tech ST made by Champ, ecore. The metal caps on Champ ecore including ACDelco were polyester caps. Just changed to metal not long ago realtively. However, ACDelco for GM vehicles with filter bypass never used a combo valve, always separate dome bypass. Personally, never see a Fram made ACDelco with fiber caps.
@@faxmen09 seen plenty of the FRAM type Delco filters, won't install or use them on my vehicles or customers vehicles either, GM got quite pissed when they changed it without their consent as it didn't meet their specs ,didn't even match the diagram on the box & they also had issues with them as well
@@daewooparts Followed ACD filter contruction for a long time on you tube and other filters site, never seen a Fram made ACDelco anecdote posted. One seen would be a first for me. Be that as it may, Champ Labs not getting Fram "OCOD" design as you posited. All First Brands Fram as correctly noted.
My employer went with NAPA oil filters at work. They suck due to being way shorter and making for less oil capacity for my dump truck engine. Also, when we used the FleetGuard oil filters they were longer and far easier to install. NAPA sucks b***s compared to FleetGuard filters.
Thanks for Sharing👍
Cardboard end caps. Cheap
Do you know the fleetgaurd number for a Pontiac G8/Chevy caprice ppv
You'll probably have to do a cross-reference Google check, and even then recheck the specs to make sure your good to go. What size and filter are you using now?
Thumbs down on both
I like the Fleetguard
