The Michelangelo of Microsoft Excel

- When Tatsuo Horiuchi retired, he decided to try his hand at art. But instead of spending money on paints and brushes, Horiuchi used what he already had pre-installed on his computer-Microsoft Excel. Now, the 77-year-old artist is creating remarkably intricate digital masterpieces of the Japanese landscape, all on the free graphing software.

Yep. A true master uses whatever means necessary to achieve their goals. And when it’s done under unconventional methods, i would consider them a genius
Absolutely correct, an artist experiments and innovates and this gentleman is a master in his craft 🖌️

isnt excel mostly vectors or something? so technically he can upscale his art to very large frames without much quality loss at all
We were all thinking the same thing
I hadn’t even considered that. +1 for unintended benefits
He could switch to a vector editor program like inkscape and he would still keep most of his skills
The only quality loss is in the small unalignment of elements normally invisible to the naked eye of the artist. Vectors are infinitely scalable. They are mathematical.
0 quality loss
The coolest thing about this to me is that he decided that he wanted to make something good in 10 years, (which as a college student) it feels so wildly far into the future for me that I could not imagine knowing I can dedicate 10 years to something like that. It's really awesome to see that this guy is confident in his position and knows that he'll have the time to work on this.
It's a quite realistic goal if you're a newbie. I started studying photography in 2011 and the first exhibition I was actually proud of was in 2018. Five years later I'm still figuring out how to mix in what I've learned as a photographer with drawing and fiction writing. It's a very slow progress but so rewarding once a work feels "complete" and there's only excitement to share instead of insecurities or fear no one will like it.
Japanese modesty and commitment
@AlexeyFilippenkoPlummet Plus, as a retired Japanese, he knows he has about 30 years of life to fill with art.

20 years of practice are "talent"? People think they are being nice when they call someone "talented", in reality it's just rude, you're turning down their achievements, all their hard work under a single word, just to make yourselves feel better, "there's no way I could have done that, I don't have the talent!" Yeah, sure
(Sorry if the comment turned out a bit agressive, that wasn't my intention)
@@geli95us yeah, chill. You clearly missed my point. I specyfically said (to put it simple) that talent is what one DOES not what HAVE.
@@aliceinclockworks that's not the meaning of the word "talent" though, the definition of talent is: "a natural ability to be good at something, especially without being taught"
I do get your point now, though, sorry for jumping on the offensive too fast
@@geli95us Well, I did not define it that way. I think proficiency is part of it, but more vital seems to me what people decide to do with it. Makes talent something of will and not fortuity. Although being "gifted" seems like fortuitious, I belive it is rather born of our love and choice.
@@aliceinclockworks yeah, I agree with you completely, it's just that "talent" is not a good way of describing what you mean, in fact, I don't think there's a word to describe what you mean, "skilled" or "proficient" doesn't quite cut it
This is creativity, which is what art is. Its so sad to see that today, the most unimaginative, dull "artwork" is more recognised than true talent and creativity. K2_SLAYER_ yeah..!.
K2_SLAYER_ I'm just sharing the gospel. First of all, the gospel begins with God. God created us in his image, for his glory and to have a loving relationship with Him. God loves us, he gives us free will to follow him, or to not follow him. All of us have sinned against God, we have all like sheep, gone our own way. We have chose something else meaningful to us, in our life to replace God. God is holy, he must punish sin otherwise he's not a holy God. It's no different than a judge, sentencing someone to prison. Even if the person being judged, would bring up all the good deeds he has done. It still doesn't pay for his crimes. So if God were to judge us, we would all be guilty. But God is rich in mercy, he sent his only begotten Son Jesus. To die on the cross for our sins, Jesus took the punishment you and I deserve. All you have to do, to receive salvation is by repenting of your sins. And believe in the gospel, that Jesus died on the cross for you. And God rose Him on the third day, I encourage you to read the gospel of Matthew God bless you!

@@letmesummarize1176 well tbh I think travelling is the best utilisation of your retirement. You have worked so hard in your life, now you should enjoy the rest of your life without a single worry.
Great example of art for art's sake. Kudos!
Excel is King and this guy is a boss. I've done countless thing, even created dynamic presentation that will adjust the whole deck off of a single update. I've used it as a word-processing database, and project planner as well. All that and I never imagined the artistic potentials. If the world ended and I could only have one production software, it would be excel hands down.
