As a kid in Maine I worked on a 65 foot fishing boat that had the exact same motor my boss would send me down to the engine room to start the pony motor and then throw the lever to start the main engine . at 14 I thought it was a greatest thing to do! lol

Squatch253 has videos up on how he rebuilt the injector pump for his D2. It was a 4 cyl pump but it theory, it would be same for a 6. He really goes in depth with his videos.

Back in 60s, early freeze in Joliet, il . Was mechanic . Had 3 customers bring busted motors . We put K& W block sealer in all 3 and it worked . One motor had busted cylinder wall . We installed according to instructions . Parts salesman said if it didn't work he would refund money. Saved customers lot of money . Good luck .

My hat is off to ya!
Always like to hear someone say I've got to research and learn something new.
This day and time most people want to take it to be fixed.

We had a model T and Macormick Deering tractor were crank to start .
To avoid having thumb broken cup thumb alongside the fingers ,on same side of the handle as the fingers are on .
This keeps a backfire from ripping the thumb off .
Glad to see you fixed the motor . good work .

It's a start , Jonathan . You'll get it figured out . I reckon as you go through it , all of the little leaks will get fixed . That way when she fires off , you will be free enough to see any other troubles . She rolled over easy enough , & had oil pressure . One piece at a time . If anyone can get it running , it's YOU Brother !

When I was a tractor driver at Caterpillar East Peoria building LL in the 1970's we built a batch of artic equipped D-9's for the trans -Siberian pipeline that the USSR was building and they were all equipped with pony motors that were almost identical except the pony's had electric starting motors and the bendix engagement lever was moved into the artic insulated cab. The bendix is designed so you have to hold it in like some of the old cars that had a mechanical starter pedal.

Its what my dad and others of his era worked with. Some still are on the islands in alaska where the government dropped them and we tried successfully to start. The machine itself had problems with frictions on the finals but it did move and then left after we were through playing with it at Thorne Bay, Prince of Wales Alaska. That was back in the seventies. One other was at a mine above marblemount washington.. at a mine called the silver queen mine. The pony motor started with a crank handle between the blade an radiator. It kicked back and broke my cousins arm four weeks I think before he went into the marines. I really hope it barks to life for you Jonathan. I know a persons hopes shouldn't be too high after so long but I feel like it should go.

Friend of mine got an old D6 from the late 40s that hadn't run for many years. Problem he had was the plungers in the injector pump we're stuck in the up position. Just had to spray them down good and give them a little gentle persuasion to get them to drop back down against the cam. The gears on the plungers were turning okay to meter the fuel so we don't pull them out and we made sure none of them became disengaged from the rack while we were working on them. We were able to get them unstuck and pumping again. Reminded me of loosening stuck valves in an old inline flathead engine. I noticed some injector pumps have a dipstick in that long rectangular cover so you're sure there's oil in there for the cam and plungers.

In the UK we mostly had Gardner diesel engines and Rolls Royce diesels in old big stuff, to get sticky inline injector pumps to free off when they've been stood for years just rotate the pump cam till the plunger is 'off cam' and a few seconds with a small blowtorch on the housing would usually work best. Then just oil it all up. Best of luck 👍

it's hard to beat old Indian head shellac, to please the crybabies, maybe we should call it, "native American head." it's not suitable for everything but it's been around for a very long time and it's pretty much my favorite. I like your idea using a drill to start that little engine, I used the same methods on those old Wisconsin's I had, I did have to make and adapter to fit the crank pins on the end of the shaft.

Those old cat injection pumps had a habit of the rack sticking if they set for long periods. It goes against everything I know, but I’ve seen numerous people get in there with a brass drift and a hammer and pound the rack back and forth till it free’d up. You’re obviously a intelligent man, so repair at your discretion, but the barrels need to rotate out of the no fuel position before they will pump. Keep on being you!

I have a D4 which doesn’t like to prime even with new filters and turning it over with pony. I’ve had to assist with pressurizing fuel tank and that does the trick. After it is primed it works fine. I’ve never worked on Cat injector pumps, have always worked even after 20 years. I think they are plunger type pumps. On Bosch plunger pump I’ve had plungers stuck in up position, you’ve probably checked if they are moving, just another suggestion.

Cat also made a D17000 from the same time period, that were used in generators, switcher locomotives where two engines were used and in bulldozers. The were massive V8 engines. There's some on CZcams that are running pony motor and all. I hope to see this one running!

Heat that pump up with a heat gun or a small blowtorch until it is too hot to touch. Then apply some gentle taps with a peening hammer to the case, rotate the cam and wiggle the hell out of the rack. Those plungers will come loose eventually. They usually just stick in the upper position because of varnished fuel. They very seldom rust together if the pump hadn't been stored for a long time without the plumbing/injector lines.
NEVER try to pry the plungers down with a screwdriver or a pry bar!!!!!
    They break very very easy!!

Worked on one a few years ago and the D7 the injectors were a pain to bleed there are screws on them to bleed them they wouldn't bleed at the line till we bled the body's the one on the D7 was a square head on the back ish of each body ? I believe ? once we did that then line it was good, also you haven't lived till you have push started a 25,000lb bulldozer with a sticky clutch 🙀☠️

That brazing will be fine. It's a time-honored activity to braze up tractor blocks. Any # of Cats have been brazed - main and pony engines. Rolled it over in low for a while then change up to high gear - looks good. A common issue with the fuel is that the rack gets stuck and / or the injector plungers get stuck up. Don't be tempted to tap the rack - instead gently work each plunger up and down until they free. The risk of tapping the rack is that the plungers lose their setting and Cat does not publish any information on how to recalibrate them

be sure there is always fresh oil in the pony motor.. they are not pressure lubed.. if the gasoline gets diluted from the main engine running and the fuel is still in the pony motor carb.. it will dilute the pony motor oil and destroy the bearings.. perhaps the block and crank journals.. the normal procedure is with the main engine running. shut off the fuel to the pony motor.. let it run out of gas so no fuel dilution in the pony motor oil can happen.
you may want to watch the video with this title.. Caterpillar D2 #5J1113 Diesel Engine Assembly Ep.31: Injection Pump Assembly & Setting The Fuel Rack
