Been watching u for years Curtis We've been running parelell situations. In 2015 to 18 I had a GAHT system greenhouse in Boulder, CO, ( built by Ceres) with a huge garden, just feeding myself, a couple clients, and the neighborhood, then found some property in northern Idaho, and am doing pretty much the same as u, on a much smaller scale, just for me, a 70 year old single woman. I''m off grid in a tiny house, water from rain catchment, wood stove, and right down to pooping in a bucket. This is my first winter on my ten acre property. Just wanted to tell ya, this video was very informative for me. Thanks for all the wisdom and info u've imparted along the way.
If you know it is going to snow, buy some tarps and secure them around the panels. When it's done snowing just pull the tarps off. You could probably even put like a pool cover thing on a spool at the top or bottom and it would save you so much time. You could even put heat trace wire on the face to deter the condensation from icing.
I grew up in Kelowna.
My uncle had a cabin up in Joe Rich off of Philpott road.
I can remember one November when we got snowed in for three days, it snowed over three feet in a day or two, we had to put a rope to each snowmobile so we could find them later to dig them out. I imagine the snow you are dealing with there is similar, dry and fluffy, not the heavy wet snow they get on the coast.

At the same time, makes me be tankfull by living in 10a!
Just the amount of money, work, materials, you need to survive that winters one would live for 5 years for free in my area. Less insulation, less wood for heating, simple inside boilers, smaller solar and batterie bank, simple greenhouses, all year round growing season...
This always makes me think that northmen dominate the world just because of the need to work harder!
Where do you live? There's pros and cons to everywhere... winter can be difficult but it helps to kill pests and diseases, in a lot of the western world there is relatively more political stability in the colder countries, less population and still high standard of living and technology, less problems from water scarcity and drought... in Europe now almost everywhere is suffering heat waves in summers leading to increased air conditioning need due to poor insulation so insulation isn't just good for cold.
It’s a good thing you’re still young that amount of work on a daily basis is going to get harder the older you get
they will be able to do this into their 70s or 80s easy. lazy city people wouldnt be able to at that age tho
38deg Lat: 20,640W PV home and 13,300W PV for shop. Battery: LFP 143kWh and 12kWh. 8.25 tons of high eff heat pumps 16-33SEER for primary heat. All but one system ran at 50F indoor setpoint. All heat kits disabled. 80 gal hot water heater. 10kW LP Gen and two wood burners for backup. Loving it off-grid. You are correct about 1000-2000kW pv output on these dark cloudy days. Sometimes 500 if it’s really dark. My pv angles are 45 (180 deg azimuth and 66 deg (225 deg azimuth)
I consume about 20-30kWh at night right now (from 4:00PM to 9:30AM).
We were getting like 3 years of autumn....then bam...it's cold and snowy in North Ontario. My PTO blower lives on tractor until spring.

Thanks for sharing your great info! You & your family are great influences for us all. I was raised in the 50’s & 60’s on the Alberta prairie & we certainly had huge snowfalls & many days of -40 C. Now my brother is farming there & they get Chinook winds blow through quite often. Our forever changing climate keeps us in awe of nature! Many blessings to your family 🤗💕

I live on a small island in the Mediterranean. Usually this time of year I've had the fireplace going since Halloween. I'm sitting here typing this in swim shorts and went for a morning swim with a sea temp of 23C. Funny to see you talking about snow.
Thank you for providing this life changing information. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to use much of it, but it certainly helps me understand possibilities as well unlikely successes. The info in reassuring at a minimum. And this is speaking for myself. Surely others are valuing this information like gold.

We also live on a hill with a similar long lane. My husband can maintain it with his small equipment except when we get a BIG snow. That's when we hire a guy and he charged us $40 and they are not so careful about the gravel underground. We lost a lot of gravel because they are careless in that regard. My husband will be getting some better equipment so he can do it himself in the future since he will retire and have more time to do that stuff.

Curtis , in the early fall I use a rubber or poly. Cutting edge on my plow in the east Kootenay. Kubota Makes a rubber one, it floats over the rocks, plow doesn’t trip so much

Really cool video. So detailed and really inspiring , thanks for sharing. I am curious, what are for you the main pros and cons of off grid in a cooler climate compared to a warmer one?
If you run PEX around the back side of your solar with an air line attached also...you could circulate hot water from the boiler to melt off snow and ice. Afterward you could then blow the water back out into the main system so no frozen lines...or something similar...just an idea I have had for a while now but haven't tried yet myself...
Ideas are a dime a dozen friend. Cost, time and effort will most likely make that idea a waste of time.
Do you think it would be worth it to develop some kind of passive heating for the solar panels? It would be interesting if they were able to de ice themselves.
Perhaps something like a small air gap between the panels and a layer of insulation, and pushing geothermally heated air through that gap?

Your landscape from just a few videos back changed so drastically with winter. Here in South Africa it's not something that we know. How does it affect your solar?
Is tgere a silicon spray that can help keep snow off the panels?
Just wondering what the life span of the solar arrays are, and when done, what happens to them? Can they be recycled or will all of these end up in landfills years down the road?

Literally talking about protocol for big snow, cold storms, and how it will be in the dead of winter. He's giving information to share SOP's for storms like the one that hit. Big snow in November or December, who cares the calendar date, what's your point in criticizing semantics?
Point is the title is misleading. You know this but are still defending it. And for all you know the SOPs will change once he gets 9 feet of snow and -40*C.

Hey Curtis, do you source a lot of your components (I.e boilers, wood stoves, etc.) in Canada? I just wonder how many things you have to source from US based companies. I say this just cause I’m curious if you have to do even more research cause you have to source your stuff out of country. Appreciate the content as always. I am slowly prepping my house for a solar system. We just converted our heating to NG. One step closer to independence from the grid.

hi curtis, im wondering if you're burning all evergreen and soft woods in your stoves, i know you can have problems with creosote burning that type of wood in a fireplace. is that not a problem with wood burning stoves?
Of course we burn softwood. That's what we have. No creosote issues as our stoves burn the smoke too. Otherwise cleaning a stove twice a year isn't difficult.

Hey Curtis you know I love all your stuff. Too bad you didn't get a high track skid steer would it be too expensive to trade it in. I ran heavy equipment all my life and a wheeled skid steer was my least favorite and hurt me the most. Good luck my man.
A track machine wouldn't work up here. Too rocky. I'd be blowing through tracks like crazy.
@@offgridcurtisstone I ran the same machine you have for 3 years (then it was stolen) replaced with a track unit. There are alot of pro's to the tracked machine but for snow removal I would take the wheeled unit any day. In -30 the tracked machine (65 hp the same) will use almost twice the fuel moving that cold track, on your driveway a tracked machine would act like a bobslead down that hill, you would have to put bolts, cleats or track bars on it, screw in studs walk out and just give you flat tires the following summer.

Put an automatic retracting pool cover at the base of each array. When it snows, they cover the panels, then roll down after, dumping the snow at the bottom. Pool covers ride on tracks on each side.
I’m surprised you use that snow shovel. They are large but very difficult to use and I’m stronger than most.
A wise man once recommended a cheap plastic scoop shovel half that size and he was right. 10x easier, and it’s still holding up a decade later. Just a basic plastic snow shovel on a wood stick. No blades, maybe 16-20 inches. Transformed my world for the better…as far as shoveling snow goes.
I’ve got all kinds of shovels.

@@offgridcurtisstone yes for sure when it snow. Hopefully in the future there is a way to either eclectically adjust the panel in an upright position to prevent snow collection on the panel while its snowing.
If you're going to live off-grid and out of the way, you have to enjoy the work. I love it.

I don't think you have a right to vote in my country. So, why should I listen to what you have to say about it? You pay taxes in the US? Well, that's a different story. But as I doubt you do ... what business is this of yours? And if you're not paying for it, then I don't think you have a vote in it. You can live off the grid someplace in Canada. I like seeing what you do and how you do it. But I don't think my country has anything to do with yours. I know a lot of folks who are not US citizens who have an opinion. But if you don't pay the bill then you don't get to count.

@@offgridcurtisstone I've heard from lots of people who live in other countries. Just saying that if you don't pay the bill then why does your opinion count? Easy to say what someone else should pay for. When you have to stroke the check, then your opinion might change. And it's not an insignificant sum.
Everyone is entitled to have and express opinions. I worked in Banff for years and our least favourite tourists were from the US because of their overinflated egos and grand opinions. Just sayin.
