Yes, you can apply for benefits over the phone or using the mail, but applying for unemployment online is so much easier.

Here's what you'll need to apply for unemployment insurance in California:
- Last employer information including company name, supervisor’s name, address (mailing and physical location) and phone number
- Last date worked and the reason you are no longer working
- Gross earnings in the last week you worked, beginning with Sunday and ending with your last day of work
- Information on all employers you worked for during the past 18 months, including name, address (mailing and physical location), the dates of employment, gross wages earned, hours worked per week, hourly rate of pay, and the reason you are no longer working.
- Notice to Federal Employees About Unemployment Insurance, Standard Form 8 (former federal employees only)
- DD 214 Member 4 copy (ex-military only)
- Citizenship status, and, if you are not a U.S. citizen, information from your employment authorization document

First of all thank you thank you!!! this is the best and most organized explanation video I've come across hands down.. So I don't do well with brevity.but within this too much information are 3 basic questions. The first having to do with WHICH STATE I file for unemployment in since I've only worked/and now use an address in California... but officially...as I haven't yet changed my residency... am still a resident of Vermont. Any and all taxable documented work I've had for the last 18 months has been these last six months in California as prior to that... For the last two years had been put on disability about $700 a month for a chronic illness injury I am slowly recovering from. Come this last October now finally able and wantin to get back to work... and frankly HAVING to supplement...the help from disability my pride kept me from taking for many many years and which my pride now motivates me to hopefully NOT have to take ... If I can completely recover. Regardless I began weekly part-time work this last October with a steady ongoing gig thou.month to month as a 1099 independent contractor.
The plan of course was to both continue to work for this company as needed AND take on more work as both the teacher I once was and the gig work with Uber and caretaking and dog walking that I had been doing before getting too sick to work a few years ago. Like so many ...Work abruptly ended for me as of March 13th..as did the pre-planned and arranged gig work I had set up for my impending permanent move down to the San Diego area... I had been working up in Monterey California... I don't know if that makes a difference in terms of county.
Now I'm in a situation like everybody else ...as I definitely am living hand to mouth....where I'm finding it impossible to get even temporary work.....thou I'm really working hard to find anything anywhere..I still am not a permanent resident of California as I was just about to officially begin to change my residency when all this hit....
Having never before filed for unemployment. I have no records as such in Vermont and I haven't filed local for federal taxesI for a while now having neither made enough to do so ....and then being on disability. I do have a tax form with the gross amount from all the work in last five or six months from this one California employer but I had not gone ahead yet and filed my 1099.
So firstly of course is which state I should file. my second question is should I go ahead now and fill out that 1099 and send in 2019 tax forms. And my third question comes down to an ethical question more than anything.
I've always been a hard worker and don't like to take any more than I need and I'll be very lucky and grateful if I receive the $1,200 stimulus check so sorely needed. .however I can't pretend that I'm now in a very hard place with no savings and in between moves...so no home of my own.
ever since I saw the writing on the wall I have been urgently trying to get any and all work as a fruit picker a grocery stocker I'm not picky and so far have not been able to secure...
so I can't pretend that I've not been digging myself out of a very deep black hole full of debt and debilitating illness...And that I don't need or want any and all help I can find..
That said... If I can find work it would have to be full-time at this point in California where I know I will be living does one then let unemployment know immediately that I am receiving some kind of money each week although right now that's just desire not a reality.

By delegation I mean division of responsibility. Take for instance, I’m a 9-5 but I’m not getting enough inflow like I want. I mean enough for luxuries like vacation and maybe a nice house. My next instinct is to look out for how to grow my income. I could either choose to learn a skill (paid or free) depending or choose to seek the assistance of an expert.

I didn't file until two weeks after my hours were cut, will I receive retroactive payments from the date of the last day I was paid?
Unfortunately, you only get paid for the weeks you applied and certified. (So you won't get anything for those first two weeks.) Riveterworks.com has more information if you join their email list!

If your job loss was a result of a disaster such as Covid-19 then it should be marked as "Yes" and then select "Public Health"

@@erickcornejo5553 if you received your customer account number notification, you can make changes to your claim through the online portal. Once you have signed in, you go to "contact us" on your homepage. On the drop down menu you select "claim questions" and then on the next drop down, you select "made a mistake on claim filing application." Then click submit and you should be good to go.

Apply the same way he showed you. Just fill out the "employer" section to the best of your ability. If you are self employed then you are your employer. You must apply in order to get the Federal UI stimulus.
@@coronado609 On the application it says, if you are self employed don't put yourself as the last employer, it says to put your last W2 employer in the last 18 months.
If you are self employed you are still eligible for the "Federal stimulus". You can still fill out the application as stated by Miss Coronado !

Great video! Thank you. Note that a "Quarter" is "3 months" NOT "4 months" as you calculated. "Quarter" means divided into 4 equal parts. 12 months divided by 4 is 3 months.

I was on the same boat. What i did was put the Friday of the week where my hours got cut. So say on Wednesday March 18 my hours at work started to get cut from then on due to COVID. Under the question of when the the last day I “worked” I put March 20 (Friday) and then I can’t remember if it was the same page or the next one there was one specific question that was asked and I can’t remember exactly what it said but I do remember there being options and I chose the one that stated I was still working but my hours got cut due to COVID. Although I was a bit concerned that it might be misleading to put that my last day worked was the 20th since technically I was still employed but only had reduced hours but I still went with it and submitted my application. A few days later EDD sent me an email that my claim was accepted and I’m eligible to receive the money that I would’ve been receiving had my hours not been cut. Basically they’re going to be sending me the difference because I was originally working 40 hrs/ week and now I’m only working 20. My advice is to just apply and put the Friday of the week where your hours were affected and then after your claim was accepted by EDD then just call EDD before you start claiming your money to get some clarity if your claim is correct so that you could avoid problems. Hope this helps!

Just a FYI..I found out the total quarterly gross wages are NOT required to fill in , it does not have the red asterisk next to it! You can just skip that part makes it so much easier to complete.

I didn't fill that part out either, and it's telling me I have zero benefits, could it possibly be beause they have my wrong date of birth?
I'm pretty sure they'll get your wage info from your employer. My HR gal told me she received a letter to verify my earnings. EDD couldn't verify my identity so I had to send in forms, paystub etc. It's cuz maiden name/married name. So yes your date of birth, if incorrect, could be an issue. It's been 2 1/2 weeks since I applied and my letter says $0 benefits. 😲 Hope after wages & ID get verified I'll get my unemployment.

@Mengnan Liu, after you create an account, wait for 5 to 7 days then you will receive a letter in your mailbox from EDD that has an account number. You need to log in again so you can input the account number given to you.

UPDATE: after 3 weeks of hearing nothing from EDD and even though I skipped the part where you have to state your wages (hadn’t seen this wonderful video then)
I finally got a reply today. I’ve been approved! I received my 10 digit account number (praise the lord) and I can breathe again! A big thank you to Digital Sage Nomad and David Boston for taking the time to answer my questions. Don’t despair folks! Even if,like me ,you cannot find a way to contact the agency or your calls don’t go through they will answer. It just takes longer now. Good luck everyone and God bless.

miguelmunozbarba , there was no way for me to communicate with them and believe me I tried. I just waited and after 3 weeks they sent me email with approval and pin.
Wally Davidson ,I know how you feel,believe me! As you can tell from my original comment I had given up hope. Today I received my debit card with $3000 on it, now the stimulus check is another matter,lol. IRS has an old address and there’s no way I can fix that right now. So I’m “status pending”

You should get it around 3_5 days after you certify the first 2 weeks. I'm waiting for it myself. Good luck and hopefully we'll get the $600 as well very soon.
Michael Hunt i certified for my first two weeks on March 29th and the website still says “payment pending” for both weeks and i still have not received my debit card.
@@frankperez5217 if it's pending there must be a reason.? I certified first two weeks just yesterday, and I heard I should receive debit card within 3_5 days. But who knows when for sure? At least you filed and once everything is certified you'll get it all retroactively.

I made a mistake and didn't put in my total quarterly gross wages...and accidentally put "No" that I did not work during a certain time frame when I actually did. I logged in and there's no way to update employer/wage information. Do I have to wait for the letter in the mail before I can update my information? I know I have to put in that information to determine my eligibility... Thank you!
Digital Nomad Sage man I think I did the same thing. I got a letter in the mail today basically just a copy of my claim information and the section where it states employee information and quarterly earnings it’s blank. Have you been able to find out any information on how to address this?
@@Chardy221 I was supposed to get my letter today but it didn't come in. I was hoping they'd give me forms to clarify my wages.... I did log onto the EDD website for California. They have a Contact Us area. I Sent them a direct message with a clarification on my quarterly earnings. I doubt it will help though. Under the old rules I barely just qualified.... but I saw this stipulation about Independent Contractors needing to earn minimum $4,600 in California. This whole thing is a mess...

@@Chardy221 I haven't received any letters at all. I was supposed to get one today according to the Summary at the end of applying for benefits. My claim benefit is 0 at the moment online.... but I think it's because I didn't originally post my wages :(

You can put your "DBA" as your employer. The second section will ask if you are self employed and you can fill out the drop down box. / Apply the same way he showed you. Just fill out the "employer" section to the best of your ability. If you are self employed then you are your employer. You must apply in order to get the Federal UI stimulus.
