  • Wing Chun Kung Fu Open Day Seminar by sifu Gary Lam in Switzerland.
ChiSao is a exercise tool to improve each other, it is not the way of fighting.
improper "competitive" chi sau philosophy can lead to serious injuries (to one's pride or body and head)
Relax and calm your mind. Forget about yourself and follow your opponent's movement.
Do not fight with the strength, absorb it, and it flows, use it.
There is no difference in who started to study first; the one who achieves accomplishment is first.

1:57 That Tan Sao by Lam was freaking quick. The guy’s punch was going directly to his face.

  • @florisvanlingen

Gary getting "hit" the first time is that guy hitting him with his elbow out from the fuk sao position. The roll in chi sao is still mostly cooperative and anyone who does wing-chun knows you can always hit like that. But chi sao is not point fighting but a drill to teach foreward intent, sensitivity ,learning to link waist power to your hand through step in drills as well as learning to use your front hand more often.
If he wanted gary to show off his skill they should have just sparred but since chi sao is a drill he should have been respectful.

I heard that after this guy goes back up to sit down HIS teacher comes down and tries the same thing on G. L but fails also, does anyone have that footage?

This is sensitivity drill and sifu Lam is over 60 years old. For this age I think he shows good coordination, reflex and explosiveness. In reality his punches and kicks are much stronger and I am sure he could finish the opponent in a few seconds but this is supposed to be only sparring.

I don't see much wrong with this, chi Sao should always have forward intention sifu Lam tan was a bit low, even the masters get caught out, does that make him less of a master, no not at all. Much respect to Sifu Lam and all students.

I heard of this referred to as the Gary Lam Incident by some in the past. They have tried to use it to talk down his ability. What I saw in the video was Sifu Lam control and strike at will a disrespectful person looking to make a name for himself.

This video comes up on my timeline every now and again. Correct me if I am wrong but the guy going at Gary is a Bayer student?

    • @sifunenad

No. You are wrong. Its not Bayer student. It is some dishonest guy from Swiss.

He's somebody's student for sure @@sifunenad. This entire exchange is a setup to try to catch Gary out and embarrass him in my view. I have seen such set ups many times now amongst those who follow WSL's wing chun.

What we see in this video is this: G.L. was in the beginning quite "cool" since he thought that they were having a coordinating chi sao. The guy suddenly applied force and passed - taking by surprise G.L. . (Of course this happened because G.L. 's tan sao was very low. If it was in the correct posotion, the guy wouldn't have passed. But i am not sure if we can blame him, since it was supposed not to be a competitive chi sao). After this, G.L is showing him that " Ok man, if we do competitive chi sao, we don't even need to roll hands". And he applies some force/structure and the guy collapses in every attack. The only thing we can understand from all this is this: The guy managed to pass only when he had the chance to "steal a point" and take by surprise his opponent who was just sleeping. When things came to the "competitive" chi sao and the opponent woke up, he didn't have anything. No structure, no balance, no ability to handle some pressure. (Even the next "hit" he passes from above, it is by opening a line for the opponent to his chin). Plus, many things about his character))

I agree with you on all facts on this cause Chi sao is not the way of fightin. But if you declare your self as a master of a martial art as Wing Chun, you must be top ready. The first guy was funny and ready to cooperate, but obviously the second guy want to embarrass GL and in some way he did. Of course Gary fight him when they start to sparr without contact, even than he was relaxed, and what if there came more prepared fighter for sparring to attack him. I know it is disrespectful but things happened in this world and master must be ready. I am student of Sifu Philipp Bayer and few times on different seminar I witness that guys he dont know, try something and Philipp blast them away!!! No chance!
My oppinion is that if you start rolling with unkown guy you must open 8 eyes and all 16 hands!

    • @sokin01
      @sokin01 Před 4 lety +4

@@sifunenad Correct. One should be ready, otherwise he might end up like William Cheung in the past. And make the other guy look like a hero))

what i saw is that not only he got hit by suprise in the beginning but he got hit all the time. And that dude was clearly somebody who doesnt do wing chun all day or himself a master. This is exactly why most demo videos of wing chun masters including this dude are fake. They show off by doing techniques to harmless students who are not there to attack but just to play the dummy who got hit. And this dude didnt do that. He hit GL many times in chi sao and i do believe when it would come to fighting he would be the faster and more dangerous guy cuz he is fitter.
