    Sifu Lam trained exclusively with Wong Shun Leung for 15 years and was his head coach in Hong Kong for 6 years. As Wong Shun Leung's top student, Sifu Lam put his Wing Chun skills to the test by entering tournaments and destroying the competition. His excellent fighting skills made him the undefeated champion of the Hong Kong full Contact Tournament in 1978-1979, and his trophies and titles are too numerous to mention. Sifu Lam is one of the world's experts in Wing Chun Kung Fu ...

      Because WC mainly attacks 'soft-tissue' and joints to disable or kill. Two scenarios. 1) In the street: im attacked by a guy who wants to kill me. I pac [slap] his arm away with my 'left' and jam my right finger as deep as I can into his eye [soft]. I immediately switch hand position and my finger hand now covers the attackers arm as my left fung-hau crushes his larynx. I drop that hand to cover and use a pivoting right palm to break his neck. Maybe 1-2 seconds. -Who won? MMA frowns on their guys dying. 2) In the ring: RULES prohibit blinding and killing, so.. He throws a right, I pac and now.. I punch. Perhaps my punch isn't too effective on this guy but now he has time.. time he would never have if he's dealing with a finger in his eye.. to follow up. -Listen, will any MMA guy fight a armed samurai? No! BUT, Insert RULES and strip him of his weapon. Now the MMA guy perhaps wins. So obviously.. can't learn sword defense because samurai's suck? Get it?

    Trained Wing Chun in the UK for many years. I am a completely impartial observer but I have to say, I think Gary Lam is awesome. You can tell he has tremendous short power. What WC critics don't appreciate and can't feel from watching on video is the short power that the best masters have. The hardness of their hands is also something that doesn't come across. Most WC practitioners on CZcams don't have it. But Gary Lam does. Good luck to anyone who thinks they could take one of his strikes!

    Gary Lam seems a great teacher. He is very logical and realistic in approach. Some trolls complaining that in real life opponents won't come punching in straight line like the kid does, well in real fight you also won't be standing waiting for the punches. You will execute punches and kicks as fatally as possible and quickly. if you have the right training and mindset such executions have a greater chance than for a guy with no training swinging his arms wildly.

    i am a huge fan of gary lamb and have trained in wing chun for about 5 years now , i think he brings the most realistic street application out of the art , that being said i have one issue and i see this in all arts , a willing partner throwing perfectly straight punches right arm and right foot stepping forward , this is bull you will never encounter this on the street in the ring or anywhere else , people usually try to latch onto you and throw punches similar to how a pitcher throws a baseball , i would love to see this addressed

    • @TheBorgCollective
      @TheBorgCollective Před 2 lety

      This is an old comment, but I came back to this video and was thinking the same. But, I've given this a lot of thought. As a student, you need to learn foundations first. It should be drilled into you so you know exactly what to do at what time, which is why chi sau is so important. Slow = Fast as they say. Even though you're learning with individuals who are attacking with the same thing over and over, you're still getting those movements drilled into your head. They should literally become your default reactions. So, at any given moment, if someone comes at you with a specific movement, you know what to do to counter that movement. Later on, what should become part of your learning repertoire, is including other fighting styles so you know that you can react properly to different movements.
      That said, I do think real sparring is important. The difficulty with sparring in wing chun is that the art was designed to control and disable your opponent quickly. Putting on gloves means you aren't able to properly use a large portion of techniques you learn. Now you HAVE to rely on punching and maybe kicking. You can't control the situation as you could without the gloves.

    About this clip: The distances do not change. Neither person tries to. The balance/structure of the other guy is not affected by either one. Neither tries to. There is the concept : Space = Time = Opportunity. Control space, you control time & opportunity of the other guy. Beginners doing what is shown is understandable. For advance practitioners, we aim to control space & affect the other person's balance/structure. You don't always have to hit to control.

    Masterful - I don’t think I have so far found a master with this level of knowledge and I have trained in so many wing chun systems.
    What he is saying here is extremely advanced. I fully understand it but this is the first time it’s explained - for example when I started wing chun over 15 years ago it was hard - now it’s so soft - students overstretch themselves and then say wow - you were not there it felt like I was fighting with air - because it’s so soft and fluid now almost like water. Yet I can end the fight whenever I want because I’m always in control even without sight.

Once you know the whole traditional system, chi sau is more akin to the CRUISE CONTROL on your car's steering wheel, which allows you to concentrate on other things, like DOING YOUR MAKEUP WHILE DRIVING, READING A MAP WHILE DRIVING, BEING ON THE PHONE, OR EVEN DRINKING OR EATING!!

    There is an old saying in WC: "If you can hit me, I can hit you. Who will be standing?" Treating chi sau as fighting is erroneous. It is just sensitivity, positioning & balance drills. If you want to test ur skills in a fight, then fight. But don't touch someone in chi sau and think it's a fight.

    • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta Před 4 lety

      NO, there is no such saying! The idea in wing chun is to be hit WITHOUT being hit back! As usual, ANOTHER FUCKING IMBECILE TALKS who knows NOTHING about REAL wing chun (the traditional)!

    I dont need to prove anything to myself or to anyone. What works is not the art but the artist. Even a person who knows nothing about MA can fight. Its about reaping great health, sound mind, a strong moral discipline and the developement of your skills thru a lifetime of devotion to practicing your art that truly matters. Besides, we're martial artists, not criminals. So we dont need to fight each other just because of a distasteful trait called "ego".

  • @artistled
    @artistled Před 12 lety +1

    Excellent demonstration of both theory and application that's useful for any art to practice! Bravo! Also want to add for those that know nothing about chi sao...its an exercise to help build reaction time, touch sensory perception sensitivity and self-control under fire! In no way does a WC guy expect to chi sao with anyone. Its a tool to help build other necessary attributes...thats all it is!

    You have to ask yourself what you want from learning martial arts. If you want a fighting career as sports then choose MMA. If you want good health, selfdefense (against thugs or non trained martial arts people) and peace then go for one of those traditional MAs. Most of us who have normal jobs, life ie working 9 to 5, a mortgage to pay, kids to feed... etc just want good health and may be defend ourselves (rarely) and meditate to find inner peace. Sometimes we find coming to the class to make friends, have a chat, laugh... etc. These are the things in life which we need more than being able to win a fight unless our career is an UFC fighter. No doubt the person who trains MMA for career like UFC will mostly like win a fight with a traditional MA trained person because the techniques, the ways they train is simply to fight and win. They train like athletes which require them to last 3 or 5 rounds. This requires extreme stamina. Most of traditional MAs don’t train like this. Also most of traditional MAs have blocking, form techniques which unrealistic towards a punch of a boxer or MMA fighter. Can Wing Chun or any other traditional MAs person block Mike Tyson’s (or alike) punches? Even (just for arguement sake) you can block the first punch but do you really think the opponent just stops or there are more punches to come? Just watch the boxing match and you’ll know. We probably can only these techniques (blocking) to a non trained person (sometimes it’s still hard to apply the techniques to the “non trained” person). In short, MMA training has more advantage than the traditional MAs, period. But why many (if not most) of us choose traditional MAs rather than MMA? It’s because most of us are just normal people who have normal life, jobs, mortgage.... etc and we benefit more from traditional MAs than MMA. The benefits are good health, inner peace, disciplines, friendships, laughs... etc.
    To me, there is no shame to admit that we’d get our butts kicked by MMA people because we know we don’t train like them. It’d only be a shame if you train MMA and you lose to another MMA person.

    Also, one time a student tried that exact same move against our sifu. He was addressing the class and the student thought he had found an opening, but when sifu lost the connection he instinctively hit the guy with a double uppercut and floored him. It was pretty funny to see, and sifu could not stop apologizing.
    We also practice with the intent to strike among senior students, you could not improve otherwise, but with control you can turn it into a simple light tap and not injure eachother.

    @TangoLima1 Yes, he touched him to signal the opening, that is how I was taught to practice chi sau, you don't strike anyone with force, you just apply enough pressure to collapse their structure should their form be off. Lam responded by reaching over the guy's bong sau to jab at him, which is countered by a direct strike(which is unsafe to perform on someone thats trying to do quick jabs)
    And, the strike would have landed on the neck uncontested so in a fight that would be pretty serious.

    It was between two practitioners of comparable skill level. The seminar was a teaching seminar held by lam where he was demonstrating Chi Sau, but that is all I know about it. Also, Chi Sau is not a training tool between a Sifu and student. It is one of the central aspects of the system used to train with others and often times is used to to gauge the relative skill of the users. and again, the Chi Sau ended after the first palm strike, which lam took personally for some reason and retaliated

    @Ankoku15 Před 12 lety

    The best explanation I have heard to describe it is that a teacher can only make you as good as they are at the art they teach. If his cup of knowledge is only half full, he can only fill yours half way and then you are on your own to learn. However, since most practitioners rarely surpass their masters nowadays what happens is that the cup has less in it each time it gets passed down, and the arts are gradually diluted, and many of their secrets lost.

I want to know wat are the benefits? basically, quicker reaction, sensitivity, and dexterity is wat i saw. But is there anything else I'm missing in the drill of chi sau?

    Neither of them are able to compromise the other's structure and balance. Every single movement in Wing Chun has an appropriate counter or 5 that link together in an endless loop of moves. Controlling their center or applying pressure to them is part of the chess game designed to create an opening that you can hit them with. Ip Chun does manage a few strikes on this other sifu by doing that. You don't have to hit, but that would be like opening a book for reasons other then reading it :)
