Jay as a veteran with four combat deployments with Infantry line units....I really appreciate the respect you showed Joe, and your kind words about veterans. Your last comments regarding the populace not having to give up things was spot on. I'm not a car guy but watch your channel for the camaraderie. I guess that's the military in me! Thanks again Jay!

We thank you for your loyalty. What Ragan has accomplished sure is amazing in many ways. I'm not an electric car supporter for several reasons, but I certainly would consider a Ragland Defender!

Hey Ryan - from the land of the Land Rover here in England - congratulations to you, Joe and the Raglan Motors Team. For note - I detect so much more interest in Landrovers here in the UK again - that's both the vintage ones and the new ones! What you have done is impressive!
😂 mate im in Scotland and litteraly everyone i know avoids LR like the plague. They are dying out in the UK the MOT database proves they are less popular than ever mainly because folk know the Japanese stuff humiliates LR vehicles. A Jimny can spank a defender on any terrain. You know fine well the reputation LR have here in the UK, its abysmal.
@@bigduphusaj162 I live in rural England. Land Rovers, old and new, are very popular here and far outnumber Japanese 4x4s. Reliability problems aren't as bad as people think for the newer models. I have a 7-year old Disco which has now covered 142,000 miles without any major issues. Older ones can be unreliable but are cheap and easy to fix.

Being an old guy who’s driven Land Rovers and worked on them, from the series ones through to the Defenders, the Raglan is absolutely fabulous, make no mistake! All credit to the guys that build them, they do a fantastic job.
The one featured on your show is a beauty and make no mistake.
I've worked with Joe and his brother and you could do an entire documentary just with what this guy did after the marines. These guys are true legends and that car is magnificent - I hope to be able to afford one, some day :D

Most of the people who buy cars like this these days are only buying them for show. What these people actually want is a luxury cruiser, and that is exactly what they are getting here.
99% of the people who buy these cars will never use them off road. It is just how the market is.

I think it's time to do a review on the Vincent Black Shadow because it's been such a long time since you guys have featured a motorcycle on the channel, Plus...It's one of the most famous and important motorcycles of the last century and definitely deserves that uncle Jay do a fully detailed review on it.
100% if he can find an imported UK one would be impressive indeed. Im sure someone famous that now lives in America has one of the prototypes that set the record. I cant remember who it is they were defo in a band in the 60s though

@@OmarDenarziyeah mate they things still look good now they still fast too not exaggerating they were doing 11sec quarters with decent riders. Unbelievable performance at the time they pushed the power balance up an entire 2 magnitudes by themselves.

To me, there is a noticable change in Jay's persona. I've been seeing Jay since the 1970s. I am concerned for his health.
Well, he's 1, getting older, second, the whole having his face set on fire, had rather expectedly, an effect on his health.
He did ask the same question 3 times about how the batteries are cooled.

Absolutely. The dash looks amazing and everything just looks "right." I am not a fan of EVs but I would totally rock this thing.
I like these guys as im ex UK military myself.. but a Land Rover refurbished by people who dont know about them then powered by a junk Tesla motor is one of the biggest turn offs in the UK. Im amazed Americans still bother refurbishing them they last 5yr between refurbs they are fraught with easily rotted materials and if theyve not glued and backed some of the Alloy up it will be needing another refurb in 3yr. Go have a look on UK green laner forums and even the experienced LR refurbishers the cars need constant attention. Seen a thousand LR refurbs that fell apart in months not even years.

I popped the hood on the first Land Rover I've ever messed with a little while back and started having old Buick Nailhead flashbacks from my wrench spinning days. They definitely favor those masterpieces of old automotive mechanical art. Just a slightly smaller version of those incredible engines. You can keep your electric motors. I'll always prefer my horsepower produced by a series of controlled explosions. Like any old real gearhead, true to tradition.
EVs are shocking offroad they overheat the lot. An absolute no no in the UK they fry up here when wading too and are the worst Boat Tow vehicles ever created they fry up on the ramps. Poor decision EV belongs in an EV chassis not an ICE chassis.
I really do love and respect Mr. Leno as much as a stranger can.

British Car Services in Inglewood, CA sold me an absolute lemon Land Rover Defender. It was a nightmare to own breaking down immediately out of their driveway and weekly thereafter.
At the time, I didn't know what to look out for when buying and got taken advantage of. Finally got to sell it to another Defender seller, but at a huge loss.
Still in love with the trucks though; lesson learned for next time.

Very nice example of an electric conversion with stock running gear. Glad to see it! Hand built cars are always higher quality than those built on an assembly line, just look at a home-built classic, or specialty shop-built car. No comparison with "manufactured" cars. Thank you, Mr. Leno, for showcasing a veteran-owned and operated business. They know the value of practicality and what really matters, they get it done well and, like he said "on time and under budget". ;-)

Fitting that these guys are military vets, Raglan is a beach in NZ but that place is also named after Field Marshall Fitzroy Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan. He was in the Napoleonic wars and Crimean war.
Raglan is not the most auspicious British military name - a byword for incompetence - not entirely unjustified for one of the architects of the disastrous Charge of the Light Brigade.
@@Tourist1967 He had quite a distinguished career over a period of 50-odd years until the Crimean War (by which time he was in his 60s) where he is best remembered for the debacle you mention, which unfortunately overshadows his many earlier successes.

pity there is no chargers on lanes/trails ..as probably only 75 mile range when loaded up and off-road

@@jamespaul2587 it will depend on where you live in the world ..this is in the USA with plenty of trails 100s of miles long ..my last camping/green lining trip here in the UK i went to the Lake District was 250miles away,,we drive most of the day and camp in the middle of nowhere at night for about 5 days ..this 4x4 will be impractical for recreation or work

My late 90s Defender 90 had a Buick V8 with a bit over 260hp. It was the last year for the manual trans.
Remember having a Connoly shop that would convert your interior to leather . They would do any make and model . They did an amazing job !
Great work! Converting this classic vehicle into a modern electrical car, at the same time to keep his authentic vibe is quite difficult as well.

Wow! This is the first time I've ever seen Jay in a shirt that wasn't blue denim. This Defender 110 looks great, but I'd much prefer an original diesel manual one. Bio-Diesel is more environmentally friendly than any of the electric cars. Just remember where all that electricity comes from. Thank you.

not my kind of car but for a farmer with solar panels on their roof this must be a dream. well done
none of yoy seem to realise solar on a vehicle can barely charge a 12v battery😂 My boat has £5k worth of panels and a £2500 controller. The entire cuddy roof is panels and it stuggles to charge two 12v scania batteries from 11.6v to 12.4v within 3 days. Solar is only good ofroad for charging your second 12v deep cycle battery.
It seems strange seeing the old style of a Defender that has a functioning parking brake.
But is nice seeing it back to its roots as I grew up seeing a lot of ex-military Defenders that had started a new life on surrounding farms still in their colours.
you mean LR series? the defender was a production LR that came after the LR series. Both junk tbh
@@bigduphusaj162 I know dad after having a ride in a td5 land Defender 90 around a farm about the time we were looking for a replacement farm vehicle for checking the livestock and towing the trailer on the way back said, "I don't care what we get but we are not getting one of them! I have bounced around an Austin A35, a Mini van, a mk1 Transit I'm nearly 80. I want some comfort and not feel twenty years older every time I get out."
@@bigduphusaj162 most to begin with were LR1s then LR2 with battered canvas some that had been farmer adjusted to fit their newer replacements, never really saw and Series 3s. A lot of the Series 2 were swapped for defender 90s with some 110 that would fill the car park on market day. Though there are still a few series 1 and 2, an ex copper has a multicoloured series 2 and our insurance broker has a series 1 that you can hear coming long before you see it.
The friend who used to do all our repair work reckoned the best farm van he used to have I'm not sure if it was when working for the Queen's cousin or their neighbour was a 60s Mini van with town and country tyres as it was light enough they could go out in the fields when nothing else could and when either the body or chassis rotted out with four people you didn't need and cranes, lifts or hoists to get it swapped over with in a day or two. I think an incident which nearly led to death by anvil in his brother's one put dad off them.
LA version of a Land Rover doing the Paris - Dakar rally would be a good comedy show.

They should have made this a hybrid. That would make much more sense, given the original intended use case. You can't carry extra batteries with you, you can take a extra can of gas/diesel.
You can make it a hybrid yourself anytime, just put a generator in the back.
Well, the customer base is likely retirees taking it to the golf course. Not an issue they’d likely have to deal with.
Not in any way knocking the creators, but one’s got to think of the demographic that has such disposable income.
Lord Raglan was the commanding General of the British forces in the Crimean war in the mid-1850s. He is the one who famously ordered the "charge of the Light Brigade", and whilst he didn't take part a share of the blame for the disaster must fall on him as the one who gave the order which could be misinterpreted so badly. He was also generally an ineffectual and weak officer, who wasn't widely respected.
You've made a nice job of that! If you want a better/tidier solution to the Air Conditioning, which doesn't loose the passenger footwell, there's a kit supplied by Ministry of Defender which puts the evaporator in the same place as the OE heater box.
I have no connection with the company - but I liked their solution.

Their website says: It cannot use the Tesla Supercharger network. At the moment, Tesla supercharging is locked via a ‘handshake’ or ‘handoff’ mechanism. Since our parts come from upcycled vehicles, these are taken out of the supercharger system by Tesla and thus we cannot achieve a successful handshake.
I love the mention of the non -working horns on ' rebuilds '. Never gets old, especially when U know that there is always at least one viewer who has never ' heard ' it before, These Veterans and their fellow Veterans make me proud to be an American every waking moment,

lost me with the EV bit.. you can not use it as intended.. will have a very poor range with 3.5 ton behind it which is its rated towing capacity and no charging points in the wilderness ..so what the point

What about a portable Hydro generator unit to dip into the rivers that one might find. We’re just so used to the status quo the refineries, and the pipelines that we can’t imagine anything else it’s not like us to be so unimaginative.

Agree, easier to generate electricity than create gasoline for the zombie apocalypse.
My farmer friend has the turbo diesel in his and after it was chipped it pulls a sheep box and a second trailer with no problems I know this as I have driven it . electric has its place but off road ? No way

So, the Tesla drive unit takes the place of the transfer case. That is pretty cool. I wonder if the unit can lock together or if it is an open differential.
