I have one just like this but as with many people, mine slowed down to a crawl. I have a new tank with a few plants and no fish. Even so, I cleaned it which made it a bit better but by the next day, it had slowed down to the point it wouldn't move the surface of the water around. Yes, I had taken it all apart, and there was nothing wrong. I decided to put it back in the tank but take one of the sponges off. Lo and behold, it started working really well. The problem is that the sponges are more of a water-polishing sponge and the motor isn't strong enough for them. What you can do is to replace the sponges with ones that are courser and flow more water through them. You can also do what I did which was to raise the sponges about 1/4 of an inch above the media cups. Make sure they still cover the last holes in the plastic tubes but give them space above the media cups. After doing this my filter is working better than it was new out of the box a month ago. The flow is working so well that I'm getting air bubbles in the water.
I hope this will help people that have some issues with these filters. I really like mine now and I'm glad I didn't have to replace it.
Thank you for this tip. I am having the same issue. No water flow and the sponges were sucked in. I even put an air pump to help the motor but it still flows super slow. I'll try your trick thank you!

What about oxygen for the water? Will I still have to run an air stone separately?
If you keep the outflow above the water surface it will create enough surface agitation

Running an Undergravel filter with some heavy root feeder plants would pretty much hide all that mulm.
What's some heavy root feeder plants?
How have the motors held up? I heard there was a longevity issue with the motors.

Is there any place online to buy less fine filters? It is a hassle navigating Amazon to find the right product, perhaps I am not using the right key words. I'm running the 5 watt unit for reference.
Do you think that the small version is good for a beta tank or is too much flow for a betta? Great video you just got one more subscriber. By the way I found sold out the small versiono of these filters on Amazon damn it!

Maybe it’s just me overthinking, but I feel like something like this is a huge shock hazard. It seems like a really great filter, but I’m afraid something bad will eventually happen if I get it.
Most aquarium equipment would
Be a shock hazard if it wasn’t rated for underwater use.
Seriously how can it shock?...There are literally no electrical parts inside the aquarium and also, do you know how many safety tests these things have to go through before they are even allowed to be put for sale to the gemeral public?!
If you have read instructions, you would know to wash media and sponge 1st
