I really like your take on the film that it is violent. I totally agree. I have watched it several times now it has become my favorite comfort movie. But as I get older, watching this movie reminds me of my mother, she also suffers in silence. Coming from a male director, this movie does a reallly good job on depicting women's hidden emotions.
Wow! Thank you, this is a fascinating analysis of this film. The idea of Mui and the pianist's romance representing a choice for traditional gender roles never occurred to me. Would you say then that this film is a critique of traditional Vietnamese gender roles, a praise of them, or just a neutral commentary?
the movie uses metaphor image language, so it's very open for interpretation. I would say it's a critique, since it's a common theme in Vietnamese art.

you can look at Tran Anh Hung's Vietnam trilogy with the Scent of Green Papaya as the first one, Cyclo, and the Height of the Summer. Other pronounce Vietnamese filmmakers you can look into are Phan Dang Di, Dang Nhat Minh, Phan Gia Nhat Linh, Charlie Nguyen, Ham Tran, Nguyen Hong Anh, Tran Thanh Huy, etc to name a few
I was so mesmerized by the beauty I completely forgot to even think about what it meant on a deeper level.
