Battle of Stäket 1719

  • Dear viewers. The other day I remembered that sometime a long time ago, I posted the Battle of Stäket video on CZcams. I can't remember the thinking behind putting it there, maybe someone wanted all involved associates to see it. Anyway, imagine my surprise when it had almost 300K views. And as I'm writing this, it has reached 355K.
The film was produced by Christian Arnet and Svea Television, commissioned by the battle field museum 'Hamn' (that's 'harbour' in Swedish). It is projected on to an almost 180° screen in a circular room by three overlapping projectors, and the idea was to let the audience have some small feeling for what it might have been like to take part in the Battle of Staket 1719.
The battle field museum is located in the Stockholm archipelago, almost exactly one nautical mile from where the fighting took place and as for the actual events during those days in July of 1719, a good place to start if you want to find out more is the Wikipedia article (if you can't visit the museum in Fisksätra yourself of course).
I will only mention that this is the closest any Russian force ever got to the Swedish capitol, and it is doubtful whether they actually wanted to push for Stockholm, had they won the battle. The events at Stäket was part of an operation more designed to force the peace negotiations between Sweden and Russia in Russian favour, rather than actually being an invasion.
The action scenes were shot during one day in June 2013. I used a Canon 5DMkII on a shoulder rig and (as I recall) mainly three lenses, the Canon 24-105, a Sigma 300 and a Sigma fisheye. Post production was done in fcpx, Motion, and I also made some use of blender 3D, I think. Live pyrotechnics by Bo Knarrström and props by Uniform Collection - that is, all garment and utensils that wasn't supplied by the reenactors themselves.
Thank you all for watching, commenting and subscribing!

Oh, this was quite good! I rarely like videos but this gets one. I like how it's mostly first person but not overly much and shows things from one side, it's gritty and realistic, the trepidation, the defense, the assault, the regroup, the ending, the beginning. Really solid stuff. Now as usual, time to go wikipedia the battle :p

A good foundation for imagining the real thing. Add the damage that musket ball would do in such situations and range, with heads being the most available targets. Never mind dying, imagine your injured comrades around you; wounds likely would not have been "neat" little holes with a little blood. The sights and smells of ordure. And when your enemies breached your defenses, they would've done a lot worse that rifling through your belongings.

I don't know if they did it on purpose there, but there might be occasions you might wanna do this, especially when faking a retreat as a bait.
      1) You lure the enemy to attack in pursuit by a quickly broke off skirmish
      2) Retreat back right behind a slope, concealed from enemy vision.
      3) Form a firing line with enough concentrated fire
      4) Let them come so that they are silhoueted against the sky, making perfect targets.
      5) Fire the massed volley as you are prefered and the enemy is not.
If the enemy has the sun in the face it's even a better tactic. This tactic is more effective with more modern weaponry, but doing it with muskets and cannons at 60-50 yards could be devastating too.

A surprise Russian attack from the sea resulted in a battle (skirmish) with a local detatcement "Södermanlands Regemente" on the 13th of august. 1200 Swedish soldiers defended good ground against 3000 Russian soldiers (more in reserve but never used in the battle). After an entire day of fighting the Swedes fell back towards their reinforcements in forms of the "Västmanland Regemente" and Dalaregementet", when the Swedes counter attacked the Russians retreated and in the cover of darkness they boarded their ships again.
Sweden had about 100 cassaulties and the Russian between 400-500. It is debated today if Sweden won at all since dead bodies were plundered by the Russians, and it seems more to have been disemarked baval men rather than an actual army unit who had attacked. But in either way it is deemed to have been a Swedish victory non the less.

In reality, a close quarter skirmish like that wouldn’t devolve into both sides standing and exchanging close range volleys, the Russians would have got close, unleashed 1 or 2 volleys, then charged with bayonet and go into close combat, they’d probably have smaller units attempting to flank too. It is still a really good scene, but exchanging volleys with an enemy that is entrenched and you’re in the open wouldn’t happen for long, in such circumstances closing the distance was the usual method.

Donovan Overcash If I understand it correctly this battle was fought in 1719, the later stage of the great northern war. The hard elite core of the swedish military was destroyed after the crushing defeat in the battle of Poltava 1709. After that the swedish army was more and more made up of finnish conscripts and old swedes who were not trained in battle. The russian army on the other hand got more professional during the war and posed a real threat to swedish troops and the declining swedish empire. So its safe to assume that this army fighting in 1719 is not the battle hardened and feared swedish army that set off in 1700 but more a bunch of finns and old swedes trying to defend their homeland.

Its possible that the Swedish army was running out of modern rifles at that point. Also there is a girl to be seen in the film. This too is not entirely unbelievable as some women fought in the Swedish army during this war.

Lost its empire in this war, Sweden gained its empire after the 30 years war and the deluge war against Poland. The great northern war saw Sweden against Poland, Russia, Denmark and Saxony, they started out very well and won most battles, but after a few years they ran low on manpower and the Russians gained the upper hand. This battle scene is towards the end of the war

Nice work. There was a battle at Staket in 1719. Okay. Great. It'd be nice to know who the combatants were and where Staket is. Why not include who where when and why in the description and not leave people to go out and search for it? Not everyone in the world is familiar with every other group's history and combat.
