Behind the Bar is the most descriptive, educational, and by far the best cocktail teaching tool out there. Cara describes variations perfectly, as if she was standing across from us as our actual bartender. Love to experiment with cocktails also, maybe add in some variations of your own. So glad I found you guys!
Thank you so much for the kind words pal, glad to have you!
A noble sacrifice you have made for the people, indeed. 😆 Some prices are worth paying.
"really likeable, just like every Irish person i know"
Dawh shucks ❤️😂
Just the ones she knows. The rest of us are pricks to a man.
😂
Tullamore Dew is what got me into whiskey in the first place. It was spring 2010 i think, third year of high school. On a school trip to a sailing school in Sardinia, me and my friend discovered this little hole in the wall close by. Among the drinks there was Tullamore Dew, been one of my favorites ever since.
Jameson's Black Barrel is by far my favorite. It's the bottle I always bring to parties. I bought the March Hare and it's a VERY earthy spirit. I have the Kinahans on my list for when I go shopping next. Thank you.
Very earthy indeed!
Had Black Barrel for the first time last weekend, very good! Def picking up a bottle of that
I think something that was overlooked in both videos is that Irish whiskey does not have to be aged specially in oak casks, unlike in basically every else. Some of the results like the Teeling “Wonders of Wood” bottlings or the Method and Madness experiments are truly amazing whiskeys and it’s a great way to play a bit more with your spirit
thanks for that video series, I'm very much into the history of whisky, the roots in ireland, the development of "new school" with Mr coffey and now irish whiskey getting back into the scene ....also I'm getting myself a Kinahans Whiskey right now!
Hope you like it!
I tried RedBreast 12 and 15 at a Whiskey X event and I've been hunting down as many Single Pot Stills as I could find ever since.
Really enjoyed this one! Always great to hear your thoughts on the different styles of spirits.
Thanks pal, I enjoyed it too!
For the price, I really like the Bushmills Black Bush. It goes for about $30 here in the States. When I want to spend a little more, I go for the Teeling or the Redbreast, both gorgeous whiskies.
Great recommendations. Looking forward to exploring Irish Whiskey a bit more.
Teeling is wonderful! So smooth, with some nice sweet notes! Bravo!
I quit drinking my island poison (rum) few years ago. Started learning about Scotch and Whisky few years ago... It is a universe! Love your videos.
In this video my favorite is redbreast...I also like the one with the little birdie and the 15 on it too.
One of my favourite videos so far. Once I saw the Connemara on the Thumbnail I was hooked. Love this whiskey.
My first contact with peated whisky was Lagavulin 16 and I loved it. And during the time I was living in Ireland I found Connemara and the rest is history. One of my preferred Irish whiskeys. Thanks for the great video. Cheers!
I was looking for Irish Whiskey just recently and turns out you just uploaded this video. Thanks Cara, made my Monday :)
Perfect timing!
I love this content; every time I watch one of your history or style videos I have the urge to go buy at least 4 new bottles to compare. Thanks!
Hahaha sorry about that 😜
Redbreast is tough to beat, Single Pot Still is my favorite style. Powers John's Lane 12 and The Spot whiskies are also exceptional Pot Still Whiskies!
Great video as usual Cara! Cheers!
Love these informative videos. Going to have to find myself some Irish Whiskeys. Mostly drink Bourbons (being an American). I have tried a few Scotchs as well. Time to dive into the world of Irish Whiskeys!
Very well done. I liked the explanation & straightforward delivery.
Thanks Malcolm!
Redbreast 12 is a good go to. Nice video and lesson. Thanks!
Thank you!
great information! thank you. Been enjoying a red spot lately
Yes, I loved it, so informative, I have the same Jamison and I poured me one and checked it out right along with you, that was so cool, Love the stories and the history! You are always so open and honest with your opinion, Love it!!!
🥃
I'm a big fan of Irish whisky. I may be a Scotsman but my family would go back & forth for work & my Dad would always bring back various fancy Irish bottles... Bushmills is prob. my favourite dram
I don’t even drink and I love these videos. Keep up the great work!
Please Lass keep them coming. Much Love, John.
We plan on it- filming again today!
Glendalough is a good budget Irish whiskey. They also have a tasty gin ;)
Thank you for your sacrifice. No really, thank you for the overview. I appreciate your point of view here. I've had a lot of Jameson in my life and now I am very interested to expand my Irish portfolio. (ha)
The Whistler 5 yr single Malt has to be my new favourite! Wow
One interesting thing you touched on is that Irish Whiskey doesn't have to be aged in oak. That isn't the case in the US, Scotland, or Canada which have to use oak. There are good reasons why oak is the standard, but I am excited to see what Irish distillers discover with all the experiments that they are now running. I'm going to look for that Kinahans so thank you for making me aware of it.
Ms Cara,
I would like to thank you for these videos. I first began watching them out of curiosity, but began to really enjoy them for the way that you present them and there educational quality. Your presentation is exceptional and worthy of a Master's Class presentation.
Cheers,
J.H. Parker (the H is for Hamilton)
Thanks John, so glad you like them!
That was just a really good no nonsense review ! Thanks Cara . I've been thinking about trying some Connemara for ages, will definitely give it a try now.
I love the Teelings and have been awaiting your Irish Whiskey video.
Finally subbed. Sláinte!
Yay, thanks pal! Teelings definitely at the forefront of changing the game 😊
The Bushmills single malt for me - my favorite Irish whiskey!
I've been waiting for this video, love it. I lean on the Irish side of whiskeys, bought a bottle of Redbreast and loved it, maybe a little too much judging by how little of the bottle was left the next time i went to have some lol. Love your work.
Haha I know that feeling!
I met a barman in a hotel in Italy who put my knowledge of Whisky to shame. (They apparently have formal qualifications in Italy on wines and spirits). I’m catching up thanks to you. So interesting and as a Scot..... a little disappointing but hey.... I’ve yet to meet an Irish person I didn’t like so I’ll take pleasure in searching out one or two of those to taste.
There are some world wide ones - WSET is a good place to start if you’re interested, gives you a good grounding 😊
Love this channel! Thnk you for breaking down the somewhat confusing landscape for modern Irish whiskey!
So glad you like it 😊
Always wanted to know but I was afraid to ask about. Thank you
Very interesting thank you
Really informative and kept me going until the end. Thank you!
So glad you liked it!
I completely agree with you about how exciting it is to see what new Irish whiskies make it on the marketplace in the coming years. Personally, I'm a big fan of the cask strength Redbreast 12. Flavors of the regular 12 yr bumped up to "11".
Grea video! My favourite is Redbreast!
Would love to have access to more pot stills. Tough for me to find here in Sweden. I was visiting a friend (happens to be president of an irish whiskey club) and got a wonderful evening of trying things from redbreast up to Midleton very rare pot still. A great variety there with some fantastic different taste profiles.
Been enjoying your videos great stuff
Brilliant. Thanks.
Connemara has been a favorite of mine lately, neat or in an Irish Godfather. (the slight smokiness goes great with the sweetness)
As a Scotch fan, I'm rather taken with the taste of Writer's Tears -- Copper Pot ( a rather "Scotchy" dram, to be sure , and a fine one at that ), and quite enjoy an occasional splash of Kilbeggan... Both are fairly mild and very pleasant to sip neat, or with a wee drizzle of spring-water. Love your content, Lass. Stay safe. Hugs from Canada.
I got to admit, I come here for Cara's lovely voice. It's almost as beautiful as she is. Learning is also nice but purely secondary in this particular instance.
Simp alert.

@@-Wreckanize- MAGA I presume.
Her accent is barely Scottish very watered down.
I really love irish whisky- especially Jameson, and Tullamore, which are the really aprochable ones, but I recently tasted Sexton Single Malt, which is really endulgeable :)
Ooh, I love Bushmills Black Bush, my favourite.
Hi Cara - A great knowledgeable video. Well done.
Thanks pal!
Thanks for the education! I never knew much about Irish whiskey or what makes it distinct (and I *still* don't know that about Canadian whiskey). I recently got a bottle of Irish whiskey for St. Patricks called The Sexton that is matured in sherry casks. It's a curiously inexpensive single malt. I definitely notice those green apple notes you mentioned on the nose, it was the first thing I thought of when I uncorked it. In the mouth it has a kind of honey quality to the malt that combines with the apple to make like a ripe stewed pear taste. Definitely on the sweet side, but it dries out just a little on the finish. Very easy to drink.
Cheers!
Thanks for the great video. It would be great to see a Scotch masterclass like these Irish whiskeys and the American whiskey series.
It’ll be coming, I promise!
I am salivating!!!!
Serendipitously I picked up a bottle of Teeling to try.
Bushmills single malt (green label), and Power’s are my go-to’s, but I will now go sniff out the Redbreast. Many thanks! Oh, and Rye is the purvey of 🇨🇦. So many new ones popping up as well, eh?! 😁
I'm sad to say I've only really tried Jameson and Powers. Think I really have to give Redbreast a try😋🤔
Loved the vid! One of my recent favourites out of Ireland is Roe & Co blended whiskey originally got it to sip neat because it was on offer, great for siping but turns out also amazing in cocktails! I make an old fashioned with it which is:
60ml Roe & Co
10ml Demerara 2:1 syrup
2 Dashes of Angostura bitters
1 Dash Bitter Truth Aromatic Bitters
I usually build it in the glass directly with a large cube of ice, zest an orange peel and it’s this winter’s favourite for me, got the idea of mixing Ango & Bitter Truth bitters from the Death & Co Old Fashioned! Also makes a great Gold Rush at a 2:1:1 ratio Roe & Co, Honey Syrup & Lemon, over ice with a twist of lemon! Definitely a whiskey worth playing around with!
Yum!
Wonderful review. I really like how you highlight the different styles. Would be interested to see your take on the Cameron's Kick cocktail. I made a variant last year and found it quite tasty.
Oooh your wish is our command- stay tuned!
Paddy's Old Irish Whiskey...nice, smooth and no headaches from it.
Incredible knowledge.
Thanks pal!
Yes, she really does know what she is talking about!
Jameson has been my go to for years.
It's popular for a reason 🥃
Redbreast 15 is incredible
💯
I’ve only tried Jameson’s and Tullamore, of which I prefer Tullamore. I should probably give some of the others a try, as my wife is Irish!
This makes my Monday. Great video as always. What are your thoughts on the Green Spot Irish Wiskey?
Yay! Thank you!
New one on the block: Waterford. They do single farm releases that are really interesting.
Yeah I’ve heard of these guys, will have to try it!
Quite the fan of Tully when in comes to Irish. Their main whiskey is, similar to a Jameson, a smooth and easy-going whiskey, but they‘ve also produced some rather interesting new ones in the past few years :)
Yeah, love the top! 🥰
Looks like I'm gonna have to dig out the bottle of green spot hiding behind the bottles of Bourbon and Scotch in the cupboard now...
I'm a big fan of the tyrconnell 10 madeira cask :D
Method and madness has become the standout for me if you get a chance to try some. Keep healthy, stay safe.
Ooh I haven’t come across it here yet but have read good reviews!
@@BehindtheBar Theres loads of them. Funky bottles and at times funky flavours. I think they only do short runs despite coming from Midleton distillery
Tullamore is my go to drink when i drink it neat
I really like Slane for a mellow, cheap option. I've also been drinking Roe & Co. and West Cork, which are pretty nice.
I was underage. The one and only time I tried any. It wasn't pretty needless to say.
I remember when the whiskey bars were on the rise and popping up
everywhere around here, so many do like!🍀! 🙌!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge Cara. I checked out Bomba Rooftop. Nice place, and you Would be a Wonderful, Manager! Cheers my friend 🥃🍸😉
You came in? I hope you enjoyed!
@@BehindtheBar No. I checked it out on line. If I had been there, I would have found you, believe me! 🥂😊
Cheers mate Irish whisky is my fave
Cheers
First batch made by Cooley distillery was Tyrconnell. My favorite single malt.
Not familiar with that one. Might have to add that to my "try list" 🤔
I really like Redbreast Lustau for kinda special occasions. Another Irish whiskey that I found in a little mom and pop liqour store is Lambay which is very light and sweet
The Lustau is probably my favourite!
Connemara is my favorite, but I also like Islay scotches and mezcal, so it's not too surprising. I just love smoky flavors.
Hmm redbrest is a fine wee drop bit of a fave, thank you for your sacrifice! :-)
You’re so welcome 😜
A few to look out for -
Irishman
Dunville's
Dingle
West Cork
Waterford (doing some really interesting, single source, terroir whiskey)
Glendalough
This was a great explainer. I feel smarter now.
I vote for The Dew. (And I'm quite surprised that she isn't pushing Scotch whiskeys) I expect seeing this person leading an Edinburgh lecture class pretty soon.
Oh don’t worry, I will be soon haha
Wow! Throwing down the Redbreast 15yr! Good for you! I’ve always considered the 12 to be the quintessential Irish pot still. Currently working through a bottle of Yellow Spot and a West Cork 8yr small batch. If you ever get the opportunity, try Dingle whiskey; very small distillery in, you guessed it, Dingle. They were the first new distillery to open in Ireland back in 2012. Unfortunately, due to their limited production, they’re the Pappy of Irish whiskey.
Yes, we do get Dingle here - really good whisky. Cheers!
They actually just released their first “core” release which will be coming continuous and hopefully help them to get a bit better distribution
Irish, unfortunately, is a region of whiskey I often overlook, but whenever I do drink it, I'm always happy! The Sexton and Redbreast (12 & 15, haven't had the others) are my 2 favorites, but I really need to try a lot more!
Ooh I haven’t tried the Sexton to be honest, will look out for it
Pass the Bushmills black bush fair lady it's my favorite
6:02 - you need to try Dunville's 3 Crowns Peated, from the Echlinville distillery.
Black Bush is one of my favourite cheap mass production whiskeys
Bushmill's 10YO Single Malt is the only Irish whiskey that makes my lineup regularly - I'll definitely have to look into whether Teeling's or Redbreast is available around, those sound fascinating to try, as to Tullamore/Jameson's I find it fine as a sipper when I want something rather cheap and simple, but 9 times out of 10 I'll reach for a bourbon/rye for a cocktail or a glenfiddich 12/Tallisker 10/Bushmill's 10 to sip.
I've got Redbreast 15 and 12 Cask Strength, Connemara, Jameson Lively and Bold. Definitely nice chill out whiskeys. Over the lock down, did do an zoom tasting for Teelings, they have some really interesting things coming out, including a New Zealand exclusive... Just need to convince the hubby to expand the shelf first...
Haha just be careful, it’s a slippery slope- we barely have a shelf that doesn’t have whisky on it now 😜
Might try going ahead and buy them, him seeing them setting around the kitchen might inspire him to go ahead and get it done, make sure a couple of his favorites are mixed in with them, good luck!
@@little_billy I love how this channel is filled with enablers :D
Just the kind of positivity we all need right now lol
I cut my teeth on Knappogue Castle whiskey, and it's all been downhill from there. I attribute it to my fondness for bold flavors in my whiskey -- flavors that stick with you all night and into the next morning. Sadly, I haven't had it in a long time.
Thanks for taking us through that. Very interesting. Just got my first bottle of Jamiesons!
Is that a new tat?
None of them are particularly new but the weather is getting better here so some might have been covered before haha
Connemara is the best drunk. It's amazing all round. Very different pungent.
Bushmills is nice for drinking neat or on the rocks. And Paddy is good for Irish coffee. Irish coffee has long been the only (sort of) cocktail i've known that requires Irish whisky rather than from another country. Maybe an idea to do some coffee cocktails?
Coming up!
I watched this video at breakfast and then went to buy a 12yr Redbreast. No regrets!
Yas!
I like the way you think! 😋
@4:40 It's the quality content I signed up for. Watching grown adult struggling against the teeniest things in life.
Hahaha it was out to get me!
@@BehindtheBar Nothing messes with Cara! Show it who's boss! Drink the whole bottle!
Jameson is what I call a "friendly" whiskey.
Totally.
The stout edition is sublime.
@@BehindtheBar - Just friends, or friends with benefits?
Great, now I have to go finish the remains of my redbreast 12 that's been sitting on the shelf for a while...
The things we do...
I'd love to know about single malt whiskeys❤
Roe & Co is delicious. Its a typical Irish whiskey flavour (I can't remember the grains, distillation or blend right now) but finished in bourbon barrels. It's smooth like Jameson on the tongue but you get a lovely smokey, sweet bourbon finish. Well worth checking out.
That’s the Diageo one I mentioned! Tasty stuff.
