What Jeff said is absolutely true. Carcass started the whole melodic death metal scene and the Swedish bands just tried to take credit fot it. Also, while I must admit I am a huge Michael Amott fan he didn't influence the band the same way many people think he did. It was all Bill. Bill started Carcass, it's his band, his musical outlet and without him the Carcass sound would be that of shitty bandwagoning death metal bands ( bands that claimed to be death metal in the 90's). Bill Steer is the father of Melodic Death Metal.
guy is so honest no fucking around he is just a working class guy who wants to make some noise. seems really chilled out relaxed guy lets things unfold.
yeah i mean its amazing how they got a drummer that has ken owens special style. i am really glad ken owen had something to do with the record he adds a special element to surgical steel.
Swansong is still one of my absolute favorite Carcass albums. I can't imagine anyone calling it weak, some of the best riffs ever written are on there. Classic stuff!
+Tim MacKenzie sorry man, to be honest swansong got to a level very similar to megadeth or testament. Even Firm hand had a last solo guitar very similar to metallica's The four horsemen. Symphonies of sickness is their best work because till these days no one has ever reached that freaking level, never. Not even Carcass itself today, it is just out of any reference or comparison. Heartwork was a very popular record just for the context of that time being: the 90's, mostly influenced by pantera, megadeth and so on. But symphonies was 20 years ahead of its time. Way to ahead. That record broke the paradigm of metal itself in 1989, the last ray of hope for metal to the future. Clean your ears and you'll hear the abyssal difference to the point of SoS crushing Swansong. Even bill says Swansong wasn't the best carcass record at all. The only one reaching SoS was NDTI, and only maybe.
Gotta agree. It's barely even hard rock. The ironic thing is the songs aren't even catchy. Lyrically it's clichéd. There's zero aggression. It's not impressive on a technical basis. Just my opinion. Very polarizing album
@@mrgvila so because we don't like the album that makes us stupid?. If u like the album that's fine. Not sure why you have to be insulting people for disagreeing.
Only been a fan for 9/10 months and I'm excited to be seeing the band in October this year. Late to the party but I'm always happy to be introduced to cool stuff.
I LOVED Swansong when it first came out and still do. It may be less brutal and more melodic, but it still has a great guitar sound and I can't get the songs out of my head.
Swansong is the best work in their discog. It's the definition of melodic death metal. Their pre-'91 discography is mostly unlistenable, imo. Anyone who likes a band because they're "brutal" is a dumb little kid, no offense intended to you personally.
@@lolYT69 Generalizations are bullshit, I see Slayer and other such brutal bands as enjoyable from teen years onwards for being brutal... but maybe I am just a perpetually dumb little kid
I'm absolutely and clearly that this album got any track as an anthem! The quality for mixing, the Punch and the way their made was really meaning for release it out! An epic awesome album!
Looking back at old interviews, like from Headbangers' Ball 1992, Jeff comes across quite a bit different now days. Back then there was a more, almost pompous aspect, a bit arrogant and more serious. He seem very comfortable with himself and matured for sure... No wonder they came back with a vengeance with Surgical Steel. One of my favorite bands since I was 14 in 91!
Well except a few bands like Def Leppard most of British rock stars/bands are ego-centric, selfish, arrogant and pretentious. Not that I'm glorifying their American counterparts (like GnR) but you can see that in UK bands more, sadly
If I never knew about Carcass and I saw Jeff on the street, I would never assume that he would be associated with grindcore or any form of extreme music.
I remember that! A woman was talking about how her husband wanted Carcass to play for the wedding music, and Phoebe was all like: "Ooh, is that spelled with a "C" or a "K"? Oh my god, it doesn't matter, they're both great!"
Without succumbing to the atrocity of labels and carving their niche with the perfect equilibrium of melodic and grindcore. Hats off to these blokes. They are gentlemen who are always willing to converse with their fans. Total antithesis of Metallica because they progressed as musicians while Mesoldoutica placates to the masses who started strong with Kill Em All and kept getting less creative and more saturated with every subsequent album. Carcass does not care for popularity. They do it for the music and that is evident with a career verging on 40 years and never compromising their roots. I WANT ANOTHER ALBUM!!!
I think surgical is an incredible freaking record, especially considering that they were coming out of a hiatus... quite a few bands could learn from that
Swansong was something the band was pretty much forced to put out, probably to fulfill a contract before they called it quits. Hence the name, Swansong. It was well known back then that the band wasn't happy with the album, which is why they released Wake up and Smell the Carcass. It's an ok album but listening to it after listening to Heartwork, Necroticism or Surgical Steel, it just sounds like they didn't put their all into it.
3:40 im not sure where that comment about ken owen and michael ammott came from, ken is an original member and michael is a very seasoned musician. Anyway, it was very clear from the answer how wrong that statement was.
Damn Jeff dissing Mike with “he was given a bit too much credit” and then pats Bill in the back praising his work as if Carcass and Mike didn’t split ways amicably
swansong is a great record, you can argue it all you want but it doesnt matter. fans, especially in metal, get such an entitlement over what kind of music bands make. its really none of our fucking business, if you dont like it dont listen to it. people need to stop demanding bands make the same shit over and over and over again. im gonna support my favorite band no matter what because i care more that theyre happy with the material theyre putting out than if theyre making necroticism vol 2 or whatever yall expect from them. fuck, they could put out an album of elevator music and id probably still buy it
I'm sure swan song did sell well..I remember seeing commercials for in on tv......"pick up the new carcass album swan song at Sam goody"....fucks sake...
But Surgical Steel is weaker than Swansong in every aspect imaginable. I know they had to push the new record but this is ridiculous. Carcass had 5 LPs in total.
I could stare at Bill Steer for 24 hours
bill is among the most underrated guitarists ever
Criminally underrated!
He is
Jeff is always the funny guy.. bill is always the charming one.. both of them are very very sweet n I miss them so much..
They're not dead
How did you get to meet them?
Bill is really nice to stare at
When Surgical Steel was released I remember tears filling my eyes. I couldn't believe they finally put out a new album. And I wasn't let down.
What Jeff said is absolutely true. Carcass started the whole melodic death metal scene and the Swedish bands just tried to take credit fot it. Luis Mejicanos couldn’t have said it better myself!🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟
And Grind
Spongebob The Godfather of Grind
YES!
A bit unfair plenty of bands take influences from other bands
I love Jeff's honesty, he really is a genuine as can be. I wish more musicians in all genres weren't scared to speak their mind like Jeff is.
I like how honest Jeff is. No PR speak from him.
guy is so honest no fucking around he is just a working class guy who wants to make some noise. seems really chilled out relaxed guy lets things unfold.
2:35 Reporter has to give Jeff a mic because Jeff has totally forgotten he's got one in his hands. :D
Jeff is the cutest old man i've ever seen 😂
Old ? He’s like 50.
he's always been baby i will hold him
@@onepercentofone434 it's not young either. You can have grandchildren at the age of 50.
Hell, even 30 y.o considered old what are you talking about?
Jeff is anything and I mean ANYTHING...but cute. WTH.
@@rhysioeren3203 yeah, got a problem with that?
probably the best comeback in metal music!

Album Blows. NECROTICISM will always be their best work. They are my all-time Favorite band but sorry, not sorry Swansong is complete crap.
Gotta agree. It's barely even hard rock. The ironic thing is the songs aren't even catchy. Lyrically it's clichéd. There's zero aggression. It's not impressive on a technical basis. Just my opinion. Very polarizing album

bill and jeff - legends!
very rare to get answers as honest as this from established artists. Jeff saying it exactly as it is, awesome guy
Only been a fan for 9/10 months and I'm excited to be seeing the band in October this year. Late to the party but I'm always happy to be introduced to cool stuff.
I listen to swansong regularly and surgical steel is amazing!
Omg, jeff is fucking hilarious, how he made a joke out of 'injection', what a cool fucking dude, both of em!
I LOVED Swansong when it first came out and still do. It may be less brutal and more melodic, but it still has a great guitar sound and I can't get the songs out of my head.

slim people don't age
LaMom Jojo being a vegan has done him well haha
He hasn't been vegan for a long time now.
Bill cut off his vegan diet since 2011 sorry m8
Wow I didn’t know that! So how long was he actually vegan?

Smart people doing smart brutal music.

At least American rockstars don't take themselves seriously.
same here!
Yeah man! I have always had time for Carcass. I have a number of their releases and even still got Tools of the trade on 12 inch! Cheers guys!
I absolutely love there latest album beautiful album!!
Ladies and gentlemen, the lost beetle: Jeff Walker.
Carcass are the greatest ever.
Jeff is so honest like the old metal bands used to be no matter if you sell or not ... This guys are the best
Cool interview. Please record a new album!!
If I never knew about Carcass and I saw Jeff on the street, I would never assume that he would be associated with grindcore or any form of extreme music.
Been a carcass fan since the early 90s. Surgical steel is in my opinion the best album they have done.
This is the band I discovered in the most weird way.
Pheebe from Friends said she loved them.
Good things can come from strange places.
I remember that! A woman was talking about how her husband wanted Carcass to play for the wedding music, and Phoebe was all like: "Ooh, is that spelled with a "C" or a "K"? Oh my god, it doesn't matter, they're both great!"
Weird i didnt know that that was on the show freinds?lol so weird
They were on red dwarf too
I saw carcass during the necro tour in st.louis. I wish they would come back..
These guys are great blokes. Nice guys as well
cant wait to see these guys on November 17th with Amon Amarth going to be great

My guys from childhood. 2 bands i want to see before i turn 60. W.A.S.P. and CARCASS
Awesome
I think surgical is an incredible freaking record, especially considering that they were coming out of a hiatus... quite a few bands could learn from that
Hoping Ken appears more on new records with those guitar parts!
Bill looks like he is so laid back and happy. He should be playing ABBA, but thank got he's playing CARCASS!!!!!!
Carcass the best of the best
Farking legends
steer has not aged 1 minute lol hes .. \m/ '-' \m/ inhuman
CARCASS!!

The Dickies!!
I fucking love Swansong!!!
Swansong was the album that got me into carcass. I only heard the bandwagon hate later
Swansong is fucking great
What are the songs they show live in this video called?
buried dreams, Unfit for Human Consumption, This Mortal Coil
Swan Song, Heart Work, Surgical Steel are my favorite albums. Shoot me. \m/ (Also, Despicable)
3:40 im not sure where that comment about ken owen and michael ammott came from, ken is an original member and michael is a very seasoned musician. Anyway, it was very clear from the answer how wrong that statement was.
Swansong is a damn good record. One of their best
Definitely a bromance going on here.
Swansong is the best for me...
That's bass he plays is sexy
Jeff has turned into John Peel !
A bit of Lemmy too
Technical gore death metal. First time I heard them I thought they were bizarre but I loved the record.
Genius!

LOVE SWANSONG!!!
I'm sure swan song did sell well..I remember seeing commercials for in on tv......"pick up the new carcass album swan song at Sam goody"....fucks sake...
I liked Swansong.
anyone knows how tall Bill is?
Taller than Jeff. Jeff is the shortest in the band I think he just looks taller cause bill hunches over a lot when he plays
Looks 6'0 at least.
Bill reminds me of Melanie Laurent.
Jeff please, brush your teeth...
Grove Back He's British, what do you expect?
Dumb fuck, there just crooked English teeth
Jeff sounds just like Paul McCartney, you definetly hear he is from Liverpool
Also his old-fashioned bass he plays here and there (like in the Heartwork video) adds a bit of odd extra resemblance
heartwork is my favorite anyway! new album is not my favorite, also it is some disappointment
Why does Bill always look so annoyed?
But Surgical Steel is weaker than Swansong in every aspect imaginable. I know they had to push the new record but this is ridiculous. Carcass had 5 LPs in total.
wrong
I think you're in a very small minority on liking Swansong over Surgical Steel
Surgical steel is probably there best album its crazy how good it is front too back i find it gets better as the album goes along
