NO CRANK NO START AFTER STARTER REPLACED! Diagnostic Steps To Help Find The Root Cause Of No Crank

  • Starter Motors are a common failure but this component is often misdiagnosed. The incorrect diagnosis often occurs on X3 vehicles. I had a subscriber reach out to me asking for help after replacing the starter and then after a short time ended up with another no crank situation. I show you how to perform voltage and voltage drop testing and a quick way to check to see if the underlying problem is a corroded engine ground strap.
I would recommend the bulb style circuit tester. The LED digital ones cannot check amperage. Using the bulb style tester you can detect a dim light which would denote a loss of amperage.

Thank you, man. Very professional explanation. I own a 2007 BMW X3 and for a month I couldn't start it up. I had to push it up in the garage because is too cold outside (living in Canada) and checked everything except the ground, then I came across your explanation, and BINGO got my car back. Thank you and you should know that you made a 77-year-old man very happy. TWO THUMBS UP Continue doing what you do, you are good at it, and thanks again. John

Thanks for the video I got several BMW thru the years 3 series and X3 and X5 I noticed that on E9x series of cars It causes some fault in one particular module I can’t remember what module But when you do a full scan you will see it one time I got a X5 Diesel with a no crank no start L did a full scan of all module and the engine module had a lot of fault if I remember all glow plugs and think injectors faults too I did the booster cable trick and the engine started right away but when I do the booster cable trick and I doesn’t work then I go and remove the junction box cover on the passenger side to see if I have 12 volt when the key is in the crank position obviously you have to find the correct wireing diagram and I think that on most BMW the alternator stud shares power with the starter positive terminal. Nice job of explaining the voltage drop concept.

    Excellent diagnosis.
I've got a friend with a Ford ranger. He went to the grocery store last night and his truck would not start. Battery seemed good. We clean the battery terminals a little bit but it made no difference. The ground to the front core support is rusty, so I wouldn't be surprised if an engine ground is bad also.
The truck has those clamp type battery terminals. The kind when you put the bare wires into the terminal and tighten them down. They look kind of iffy. I think I'll go down to the store and pick up some new ones and clean all the connections.
Tho the pickup itself doesn't have much rust at all, the ground connections could.
Living on the coast has its benefits but also.......

Watched your whole video that was great that you found the culprit. My e92 had a similar problem but wasn’t the ground wire after changing the starter and push button and still not starting my friend certified bmw mechanic told me to replace the fuel pump along with the fuel filter soon as I did that the car started up . The e92 is notorious for it from what all mechanics have told me and I’m not the only person with the same problems my friends n52 x1 bmw did the same thing within owning it for 5 years but luckily knew what was wrong with it and he had the same parts I had replaced replaced as well with the same list of problems . Those cars aren’t reliable I guess unless you have money to keep them maintained most of the parts are plastic so they crap out in you fast . Thank you for this video, I have BMW x6 35d e70 and had this issue, I now replaced the earth strap to the engine. The old one just disintigrated when I took it off. But now I have a new problem, when I try to start the car the starter motor tries to turn then stops as if the battery is flat, but it is fully charged, actually it is only a couple of months old, so I know the battery is good. If I cross the two polls on the starter motor boom the car cranks and starts! I have no voltage drop, I checked like you showed in this video, I checked all the fuses, back and front fuse boxes, I checked the Voltage control unit that sits on the battery and it is all good. Changed the starter just in case it was a bad solenoid, nope same issue, press the starter button, it starts to crank and then dies. I am lost, any ideas?

    • @AskTheCarExperts
      @AskTheCarExperts  Před 2 lety

This does sound like a confusing probkem Mark. Thus may be the starter relay which supplies the activation signal to the solenoid. The starter relay is internal in the CAS module if my memory serves me right. If you put 12 volts to the starter solenoid and it cranks this could be a wire issue between the Cas and solenoid or the Cas itself.

@@AskTheCarExperts Thank you, this has helped me try to diagnose the issue a bit more, The CAS is working and sending the code to the key and it is synchronized. I have full version of Bimmer code and it shows two errors which tie into what you have said. 1: A0C1 Treider_KL_50L_KS - there is no explanation to this one. 2: 29 Dynamic stability control MK60 E5 - 5D95 Valve relay: VR open, voltage supply _VR during startup test too low (compared to UZ supply voltage terminal_15) ; fuse defective - (DSC: Valve relay control unit)
Not an expert, not sure where to look but, I have checked all the fuses in both the boot fuse box and the one under the glove box. Could this be a relay or a fuse under the hood where the ECU is?

Thanks for help, you were right, it was the CAS starter relay on the board was totally fried. BMW are aware of this issue, it is caused sometimes by the earth strap from the chasis to the Engine.
To anyone else with this issue, I would check your earth strap and replace with genuine BMW part, then check you CAS which is located just above the pedals, three small screws, and the CAS is just tucked up inside, ping the four clips and have a look at the board, easy to spot.
CAS unit from BMW is currently £680.00 ($840.00) which comes with new keys, locks and CAS which you will need to get fitted, there is also a three week order lead time as special order from Germany. The CAS then needs to be coded to ECU, quite mission if this happens!
I went for and alternative option, motortronics in the UK offer a repair service at £250.00, you get to keep the same keys as no recode, unplug and replug, 24hrs turnaround. I am in no way promoting this service, it is entirely your choice, I would recommend using genuine parts but not everyone, Including myself can afford to keep throwing money at your car.
I hope this helps someone who has the same issue and helps you avoid repairs that are not needed, like new starter, power control unit and battery

My issue is that the starter just clicks once and does nothing. Right after I replaced the starter the car started, after I turned it off and tried to turn it on again there was again just a single click. The reason I replaced the starter was because I measured power from the signal wire to the selenoid but not from the small braided wire that runs from the selenoid to the starter thinking the selenoid was bad.

Give me the full make model and year plus the vin and I can take a look at wiring diagrams. But you should check for voltage to the starter solenoid. You can even apply 12 volts to the solenoid and see if the engine cranks.

Hi Brandon, You will need to check a few things. The first thing I would check is spark with a spark tester, second would be fuel pressure and fuel quality.

Hello, A no crank no start situation can be very frustrating. What led up to the situation you have? What is the year and model BMW and what have you checked so far?

So many ways for a BMW to trip your ass up.. Everything from bad ground to EWS not talking to the DME. To fuses....Why you have to do the whole procedure to make sure you fix it right the first time...

LOL You are so right! There are so many things that can prevent starting! It is good to know some of the common causes to help rule them out quickly.
