  • With the right options, the BMW 5 Series strikes just the right balance between comfort, refinement and dynamic excellence. But, if you don't add the right options, the 5 Series is disappointing to drive. Those extras aren't cheap, either. Overall, it's a classy, spacious and refined executive saloon with low running costs and excellent engines. It's just a pity you need to add options to make the BMW 5 Series drive well.
Let us know what you think of the BMW 5 Series in the comments section below.

Having done 250K miles in a diesel 5 series I’d claim reliability is way better in the diesel! Why ? No spark plugs to faff with, bigger batteries leading to safer starts when the car is left for a month and longer service intervals.

I bought an F10, N52 with 138,000 miles and the engine had been replaced at 100k miles by BMW ($7000 fix). Had to do with the timing chain which is a common issue with these cars model/year. I was able to get all the service records and saw that the previous owner would wait 15-18k miles to do an oil change. BMW recommends 10-12k which to me seems way too much for any oil and filter. I just stick to what I know for my own maintenance.
I also get a “drivetrain malfunction” warming when climbing up hills or getting onto the highway (not very frequently but still an issue) . It just makes the car lack in performance but I still have a couple things I have to go thru and diagnose before I take it in to a shop.
Another thing that is common with the car is when I start the car after it’s been sitting, the oil in the bleeder valves empty and when it starts up it makes a horrible ticking almost grinding noise that sounds horrible. It goes away after a minute and although it doesn’t harm the engine it’s very unpleasant to start up at times. I’ve used a special additive by liquid molly and it’s somewhat reduced it but still looking to fix that.
another small easy fix is the AC air filter deteriorated and made the fan sound like a jet in the cabin. Took me an hour to take apart the blower motor cover, clean it out and change the filter. It’s a foam but I opted for an hvac filter I found at ACE for $2. While I was at it the evaporator smelled like mildew and I sprayed it with a foam and it’s smelled fresh since.
small little things but overall the car is quite nice, drives amazing compared to anything else I’ve owned. I got an awesome deal for it and hoping to realistically get 5 years out of it before I buy a family car.

With the estate version like I had, you live in fear of the air bags deflating whilst you own it. They will need doing one day, it is only a matter of time. It is not just the air bags either, the compressor can go that pumps them up, or the ride height regulators. These are very troublesome cars as they get old. Best to buy new and then let someone else have the problems.

I had a new 5 series estate, factory ordered car, for three years from May 2016. In a nutshell, this is a dramatically overrated car. Unless you specify Adaptive Suspension, the ride quality was much worse than the Ford S Max I had before it. I had reliability issues with my car concerning the EGR valve and Cooler. The engine was consuming coolant. There was a worldwide recall for this fault, but BMW France never contacted me or offered to replace the EGR. In the end I had the job done in the UK.
Servicing costs were astronomic. The car had poor straight line stability on motorways and needed constant correction. The Comfort/Sport seats were hard and uncompromising, causing my legs to ache. Fuel economy though was excellent averaging a hard 42 mpg overall during three years of mainly motorway driving. I had the 518d model with the automatic gearbox, but I believe the 520d is more economical still.
I am glad I have experienced a 5 series mainly due to all the hype surrounding this car, but I wouldn’t buy another one. I now drive a very underrated car: a Renault Talisman Intens Paris 160edc estate. It is more comfortable than the 5 series, doesn’t need adaptive suspension to ride well, has incredible four wheel steering, is much cheaper to service and repair, is loaded with kit and has the best seats this side of custom made Recaro’s.

Thumbs up for a good review/video but not for the car. It's a fine car but it's aggravating how the German lux brands pad the profits by "nickel and dime'ing" a buyer for things offered standard on lux Japanese, Korean and American brands (I'm in the USA so am not commenting on French nor the Italians who, stateside, aren't in this niche yet). Likely born-again Volvo will offer a better bargain as well ("bargain" being relative in luxury sedan market). This goes for the safety and gas mileage, too. And I'm not so sure that the Germans offer their traditional engineering value proposition/advantage anymore. A few thousand extra to make a 5-series sedan handle properly? Really? Only advantage is the re-sale value. My view is if one can afford crossing this threshold, do so if intending to commit to at least seven-10 years of ownership. For shorter time frame, this car is too expensive.

The new E class killed it. It is really better than any of its competitors in the same class. That car (E class) is no longer just a well made car to compete in the same class, it actually looks like a half million car at a cheaper price tag.
I personally used to love BMWs more than Mercedes-Benz, but this new E class changed everything and blew Audi, BMW, and all others out of the water.

    • @ZastinHuynh93
      @ZastinHuynh93 Před 7 lety +6

I have a late 2015 528i and went in for a test drive the new E Class with my brother last week and I have to agree it's an impressive car, packed with new technology. The interior design is impressive, the seats is great, new technology make driving one can be as relaxing as possible.
The infotainment system, however especially the GPS is not as easy to use as the BMW. The BMW is still considered class leading in handling and driving experience despite the competition is 6 years older to the new E Class. The exterior design, especially the rear is disappointing, I hope they will update it by 2018, when I will have to make the choice for the next car.
Conclusion, the new E Class wins considering it's an all new model and the current BMW is 6 years old. The E Class does come out on top but not by much and it certainly does not kill BMW or looks like a half million dollars car, not with its rear looking so much like the C Class.

What's funny is that I have a 2016 Mercedes e-class AMG Night Edition in Polar White; not the best car in the world, but hardly breadline stuff!
On top of that, I live in Surrey in an £850,000-900,000 house, does any of this strike you as poverty stricken?
Why can I not have an opinion, without being labeled a jealous poorper?
