Thank you for this, 7 years later it is still relevant. Amazing how hard it is to get good 3-Axis gimbals for FPV today. Looks like I-Flight is getting in the game. Check em out! Anyways, I got a Storm32 v1.32 (non NT version). I got the motors as well, but I need to create a compact frame to hold my DJI Air Unit camera.
Just wanted to add my own "thank you" for taking the time to put this together - I know I'm late to the party. I've been tinkering with a Simtoo "Dragonfly pro" for a while and this has helped me immensely with tuning the gimbal.

Andy, great vid, ...I hope you have time to answer a question though. I was told that the camera IMU (2 axis gimbal) needs to be centered with the tilt motor axis and the roll motor axis to achieve good results or it won't tune properly. I have a CopterLab micro gimbal with 808 cam fixture and the cam IMU is off center of both axis. I have been desperately trying to tune this thing but it is horrible, better than stock pids but still bad. Should I remount the IMU to be centered., Also , this gimbal uses small 1806 motors. Could this be an issue with the difficulty of tuning as well.
Lastly, my quad uses a 3s, would it be better to regulate the voltage down to around 7.4v before tuning.? Thank you in advance for any suggestions or advice. Love the channel. Keep up the good work.

so there is not any option to tilt little pitch without joyistick or something like that ? I want the camera look straight down.. I attached gimbal to bayangtoys x16 so there isn't any option to remotly control pitch.. could You help me a little solve this problem ?

hi I am not sure I follow what you are trying to do?
Be aware that a 4S LiPo may be too much.
My storm32 worked with a 3S LiPo, but when I connected a 4S the controller stopped moving the motors after 2 minutes.
Adding a regulator fixed the issue.
Thanks for the review on this gimbal Andy. I spent months messing around with a cheap ebay frame and a 2 axis gimbal and couldn't get good results unless I was going sssllloooww. I made the decision to buy a decent frame, an XJ470 and was thinking of a branded 3 axis but then saw your earlier video and bought the same gimbal which is less than half the price of what I was looking at.... So much better, thank you! Not 100% but thats probably because I suck at PIDs. The new version of the gimbal has two mounting locations for the pitch arm so you can balance the roll better for the Yi

If you dont have any more rc channels to use are you able to set it up so that you can choose a certain pitch angle on the configurator and fly without being able to adjust on the fly

Might be more than trim. I have the joystick working but it wont hold in a tilt position. I have tried change the defaults: hold hold pan to pan hold pan but not joy. Yaw has same issue; always returns to the default position. Sorry to keep asking questions.

Hi Andy, Really like this video and watching it to setup my gimbal. however when I put pitch control in phantom 2 v2.0 naza the pitch is getting delayed reaction with the quad is pitching forward. the gimbal works great if I remove the pitch control wire. Can you help me with this? :) Thanks
Hi Andy. I’m building a 450 and using this gimbal. I ordered a used GoPro 3+. It turned out to be DOA. Sent it back and am wondering what other current options you would recommend for the gimbal camera? I’ve seen the Yi cameras and they look interesting.
Also, I ordered, and received the aftermarket video cable/bec cable for the GoPro. Would that cable work with another brand of action camera?

Again, another good posting. What do think the maximum distance you have had control of a quadcopter, whether vertical or horizontal.
not very far. its the danger element of it. if u wanna go far it needs to be a plane. as it at least has a chance of gliding down when everything fails. with a 1k plus usd quad hanging in the air u don't wanna go far with it. your mind won't let you ;-)

Hello AndyRC, I know this is an old video but maybe you can help. I set mine up to be in Hold-Hold-Pan mode and everything works great. But if I bump the gimbal hard in the Yaw (pan) direction it will skip about 45 degrees and will stay in that new centered location; until I give it a nudge back to center. It seems like there are roughly 8 section where the gimbal will stabilize in the yaw direction and it will bounce between them if you nudge it hard enough. Any clue how to force it to stay in the center even if nudged hard off center?
My gimbal starts shaking when entering the motor phase, just after the sound, any idea what it could be?

I just got the gimbal and used it for a day after doing everything you have done on the video but realised that on all axis when I go beyond about a 45 degree angle it starts to shake alot then when i pass 45 it just goes crazy!

I bought this nacelle and I would want to put it in front of my drone, thus storm32 in vertical. When I connect storm32 it does not manage to calibrate. How may I solve this problem?

Hey guys, will a 2s power this gimbal? It lists in the specs that it requires a 3s but some of you here say you've used a 2s so I just want confirmation that that is the case. I have a Syma X8 and live at 7200ft so I don't think I will have the power to lift an extra battery. Thanks!

@AndyRC I have a Storm 32 v1.31 and I cant get it to connect thru the FTDI232 my port seting is 15200, 8, N, 1, N. I did test the FTDI232 with hyper terminal by bridging the TX and RX and whatever I send is returned, so nothing wrong with it. Please help.

hi guys, i have Storm 32 bcg brushless gimbal board and has 12c port. I downloaded Bcg Gui software and installed virtual com as well and tried to connect to board via usb cable, but error occurs "serial data corrupt" "ensure correct serial port is selected check firmware/GUI version compatibility"
does anybody know what process im not following? i tried the few different usb cable but still same problem. I don't know what firmware i am using since i can't connect to software. is there any other way to findout firmware and version of my board?

Andy, I've been about 2 weeks on figuring our all thinks Storm32. I'm gaining on it but here is what I have not been able to understand: 12C and NT. How do I figure out what I have? Or can I upgrade to NT? Bought from GearBest it shows V1.30 and came with V.90 firmware installed. I have not figured out how to update firmware. I see that the GUI and firmware versions go hand in hand but I get not supported on you board if I try to update to version .96 using the 96GUI. There is a vast amount of information on the Storm32 but some important pieces are missing. It would be great if someone, like you, did a "This is a Football" (aka Storm32) video.

I just received this Gimbal based on your recommendation. It came very well calibrated out of the box and with ver8. I do plan to follow your process to really fine tune as my sensitivity increases.
What landing gear to do have? I picked up a similar set, but its MUCH bigger lol.

hi, I don't know much about gimbal so but I have a few questions. I would love to buy this off ebay to use as a handheld gimbal however I found it on eBay for £38 but I dont know if that includes all the components that I need to work the device. I see some people connect it to the computer but I don't understand what this is for? is this a necessity for the thing to work? I wish to just use it straight out of the box but I do not know if this is possible as it all seems very complicated! Some notes: Received new Storm32 board and it is working. It will not flash later version but I am not worrying about it as v70 seems to work Ok. I have tuned to a state where gimbal seems pretty stable. I have added a DYS joystick and got it working, too. Only issue is on extreme pitch movement it starts kicking and goes nuts. What should I reset? Or should I do a total re-tune with Joystick plugged in?
These are the events that don't seem to be discussed anywhere so any help will be appreciated. kaw

I started over from scratch. It is a bit better but I have not touched the trim. I'll have to do a bit of study first.
What I don't know is should I tune with it set to JoyStick use? Or doesn't it matter. It is the little things that one can't dig out of the docs.
Sure wish there was a proper forum for the Storm32. The one Ollie uses is awful. RCUniverse is not much better.
Hi Andy, I have seen your videos and was truly inspired and bought the gimbal. Now when I connect to the power, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I tried to follow your video to flash the firmware, but got stuck at the vcp download part, just cannot find any page that gives the driver. All download has some text file and another file. if you could give me a link, I would be really grateful...also pls excuse me if I am asking for anything stupid... :-P coz I am really new to all this...!! thanks a lot...

hello. great video! because of it i just bought this gimbal for myself. can you please tell me, is there any way i can control the pan for tilt, yaw and row without connectin the gimbal to a pc and manually doing it? ex: i have yaw-fix, row-fix, tilt-pan and want to make yaw-fix, row-fix, tilt-FIX by pushing a button let's say :)

Here is my question: Do you think it is possible (or practical) to repurpose the Storm32 to be used as a hand-held gimbal? PC board and battery all repackaged and located at the carry end with the motor assembly/cam at the end of a selfie stick.
I can't see spending $200 for one of the offerings on Amazon.

All I want is for cam to stay steady. No need for pan, etc as in flying. Looking to do selfie record of my own inline skating. Off/On and reboot about all I would need. Do see any issues I should be aware of?
i think the longer a selfie stick gets the more wobble it will create so just have to play around with it

+JohnnySlash with my version i found 7 volts were the best. they have changed the motors since this review as you mentioned. I do have one but not tried it in the air yet. I dont think it balances as well as the one in this vid!

Andrew Smith I dont have apm setup yet but I always prefer to put the control inputs direct to the receiver. its much easier, not sure the benefits of running it through apm?
Great tutorial. I am getting this gimbal in the mail in the next few days. Can you tell me if you can keep this gimbal in one of the 3 modes (heading follow, heading lock, heading and pitch follow) once the RX power is lost? I would prefer to keep it in the last mode that it was set to but wasn't sure if this was possible.

+AndyRC I am not using it in a drone. I have it on a different application, but I don't want to keep the RX hooked up to it all the time. I only want to use the RX to change the modes and that is it. I want it to stay in the last mode I set it to.
I think it will reset its position if u unplug the RC but i havent tested it. best thing to do is ask the quesiton in the storm32 thread on RCgroups as it sounds something really specific you are wanting to do.
Andy, can you tell me why this gimbal makes some crazy vibrations when I move it little more on any side ? I mean, when I move my Phantom in hands by little it does work but as soon as I lean it in any axis by more than like 30 degrees it vibrates and it does not stabilize. WTH is that ? Can I tell it to level like 45 degrees on all axis, it has free space for that so it can level the whole time when I drive.

I have a similar gimbal with the storm32 board and vibrations from the quad are coming through into the video. I suspect the vibration balls are to blame. do you have any recommendations for good vibration mounts.
Balance the props would be the main thing.
Quick tip; use a dremel sanding tool and widen the hole on the supplied gopro velcro strap to get it to fit your xiaomi yi. Took me 5 mins to make mine work.
yep good tip. on the old version the arm was long enough for a tripod screw to the xiaomi
+AndyRC The bolts that keep my roll arm have just loosened to the point it fell off. When I was reattaching it I noticed there are 2 sets of holes you can use - if you use the adjacent ones it moves the camera platform to the side just enough to get the Xiaomi Yi to fit on the camera platform better with it's lighter than GoPro weight.
