Marathons are always emotional especially when they don't go to plan. Galen Rupp left his Family for 2 months to prepare for Chicago. He still ran under 2.15. He's an inspirational runner. There are thousands of us out there running because of Galen Rupp. Huge respect for everything he's done.

I respect him for finishing and not having so much ego that he couldn't humble himself to admit he wouldn't get a spot in the top 3. It sends a message to those watching, especially elites, that you need to finish what you start, especially if there is youth using your example to stay encouraged and fight through the mental and physical battle of the marathon and what it demands of you.

He's 37. Leonard Korir is the same age and he came in 3rd... Kipchoge and Bekele both ran their PB times in the marathon at this age. I still think he has some good runs left. Everyone is different, tho.

Galen Rupp and Mo Farrah were my IDOLS when I was doing Cross Country and Track and Field in High School. Hate to see them get old with one already retired and soon Galen probably will too. Two legends for sure.

His best moments as a professional have already passed, many of which were Gloria's, but he is still young enough to continue running and enjoy this beautiful sport. We must also give space to the new generations whose evolution is getting better every time.

It takes a good man to face the press like that when he’s hit rock bottom and realises his time is up. I think marathon is so hard because you only get a couple of shots per year with such a massive commitment and massive build up, only to have a bad day on race day. It’s happened to him so many times. Not sure whether he really is done or just has a mental block / burnout? He could, like Bekele, still have a lot left 🤷🏼‍♂️ Maybe he needs a break to get hungry again. He doesn’t look like he wants it anymore but is going through the motions. Feel sorry for him regardless.

I don’t think Galen is completely done. What I do Believe is that he is no longer able to beat everyone without being 100% and training at his best. In 2020/2021, he wasn’t at his best but it was good enough. Now it’s now. Knowing Smith personally, I wouldn’t put him in charge of someone of this caliber’s training. Truth is he’s not a pure marathoner he is a marathoner off of track fitness. He should take a year to get himself back to being an elite 3k/5k runner then crack a good 10k then go back to the roads.
