Just cold water and sponge is not enough it has to be scolding hot water from the tap, usually runs at 40 to 50c or higher if you have a boiler. Use rubber gloves even though most people can't be assed to put them on. Youre also protecting your health from chemicals in the soap duh. Dish soap such as fairy and a sponge thats been used under a week or depending how grimy it looks.
Better not risk it with poorly washed dishes. You can screw up your gut and intestines with constant bacteria exposure.
I wouldn't expect a small countertop dishwasher to do a decent job either. Good ones start around 400 to 600 eur and save big $ on water bills and it saves you anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes or even an hour over a course of the day and days/weeks over the course of a year. (large family, 4+ people) washing dishes, cups, pots, utensils.
Other pros. No arguments on who does the dishes. You're more inclined to cook at home and eat healthier than disgusting take out junk food or wet foods packaged in horrible plastic packages that leach into the food as they sit in the markets.
Cons: none if it works. Any problems with dishes coming out stained or still soiled is usually user error. Wrong/not enough detergent/prewash. Or haphazard placement of dishes in the basket. That is probably most important and you nail it over time depending on what sort of dishes you have.
Worst case you might have to get a new set of dishes that are more dishwasher friendly. Not as deep or thick etc.
