I never ever throw out food that are past the Best Buy date. As long as it’s in good shape and smells fine. I try to never buy pull tab cans.
The pull top cans are suspect to me. I only buy them when I know I'm using it in the near future. All others are just fine past the BB Date. The freshness does go done with time but usually is still good for years.
What's wrong with pull tab cans? I look for them because you don't need a can opener . Should I not be buying them??
@@Clu925 It's safe for a time but it's not a firm seal like the regular sealed cans. You need to keep a closer eye on them because if you stack them too high you could puncture the seal and not know it. Even in transit from store to home damage can occur. Just know you need to keep a closer eye on those types of seals on your cans.
There's more liquid in those canned pears than pears.
I've found that fruit is one of the canned goods that seem to go bad first. I try to home can as much fruits as possible or dehydrate. Fruits are going to be the hardest thing for me to get in an shtf situation. There's no fruit trees for miles around me!
I understand, and have been stocking up on the number 10 cans of dry fruit from the LDS church and Augason Farms.
High acidity
For those with space outdoors and a temperate to warm climate, you may want to consider planting a few hardy varieties of plum bushes and black raspberry bushes. My Mom always had grape vines with the most delicious dark purple grapes in our back yard (I think her grapes were the Jamestown variety). All of these plants will be producing fruit quickly, don’t require much attention, and do not need to be replanted every year. Plant fruits that naturally grow in your area.
Thanks for the reminders to check our food regularly.
Metal cans of tomato paste do not last. I have not had that problem with diced tomatoes....YET. Tomato paste always seems to have a problem. So, I can my own and IF I buy some commercially made stuff I pay extra and get it in the little jars. I have had some go many years passed the date and it was still fine. If it's acidic and in a metal can...it's not going to last in mid term storage.
Same goes for fruit canned in 100% fruit juices.
I ordered some tomato powder (made from dried tomatoes) from Amazon for long term storage. Hope it doesn’t lose its tomato flavor over time. I will watch my cans of tomato paste and Rotel for signs of deterioration of the can. Thanks.
If I wasn't ready to eat the canned pears that were fine but mashy, I would put in in when I cooked oatmeal, with cream of wheat/rice , in cornmeal muffins, mixed into milk, on top of a cake or ice cream, or mixed into cream cheese for a spread. The latter of those are not good for grid down, but the rest would be.
I have switched to dehydrated fruit more and more. Excellent advice!
Good stuff!
look at the inside of the can too. I tossed a can of green beans last week. The can looked fine, the beans looked fine. The can label did not have any discoloration. But inside the can, near the top seal, on that seam some cans have that runs top to bottom, was a tiny brown spot. I peeled the label back and there was a tiny spot on the outside. A while longer, and it would have been obvious. I only saw it because I carefully looked. And you’re right, it’s not worth risking getting sick just to save a dollar.
Great warning for us to inspect things, thanks.
Great advice. Always checking, even the stuff that's in the store yet. Just bought some daisy sour cream in the squeezeable container this ast week and when opened it was missing the i guess, the aluminum seal over the hole in container. When i bought again i did check to see if that seal was there. It's sad to have to be concerned about what they're selling us in our food these days. Accidents, mistakes happen but seems pretty frequent these days.
I just did grocery pick up, and the yogurt seal was damaged.
I'm glad you posted this, many commenters are always bragging how they eat stuff years beyond the date, I have no luck, my cans puff up, my shelf stable milk goes bad just a few months after the date .
The less climate controlled it is makes a difference. Remember, light, moisture and heat matter.
I have had some unfortunate experiences, but most of my food lasts a long time.
There's the proof, ring pull tins are stronger then they look. 👍 I'll still only stack mine 2 tiers high though, just to be safe.
TFS AG, take care, keep really busy everyone, & a Happy Mothers day for all tomorrow. In the UK, we had ours in March. ❤️🙂🐶
Happy Mother's Day, American style!

This isn't about food I had stored, but last week when I got a grocery shipment and checked dates on things, I found out that the potato chips they included in this order expired in December of 2023! Best believe the other items in the order got checked very closely. Edited later to add -- today there was a new food order. In this one, there was canned food that expires in October of this year--just five months from now. It makes me wonder where and how those cans have been stored for so long that they are about to expire.
Yuck!
That is so pathetic! We are living in harder times. Sorry that happened to you.
There were reports during what they said were supply chain issues that lots of those goods sat in warehouses or on sea containers off shore with no refrigeration or other protection for months. Now they are trying to get rid of them and who knows if they’re safe. Buying things by the case might be cost effective but then you can end up with lots of things either way the same best by/use by dates.
I had horrible luck with all GV canned fruits purchased from 2020 on. None of them have reached the best by date, one burst, and the rest all had a metallic taste to them. Cheaper Chinese cans with inferior lining? Probably.
Very frustrating.
ya I heard to avoid GREAT VALUE... the canned I opened said made in china.... I might try ALDI'S
I've found that canned fruit in 100% fruit juices will develop that "tin" taste before the "best buy date". I've learned to only purchase fruit canned in heavy syrup for long term storage. I've just 3 or 4 cans of pineapple and peaches with a "best by date" of 2019 and the ones I've consumed with those dates are still tasting like fruit in syrup supposed to taste like.
@@paulawinstead5660 that tin taste happens with canned tomato products also.
I ate some pears that were out of date. The can was fine, fruit looked okay. They were a little mushy but edible. The price of canned fruit is ridiculous! Thanks, AG! 😁
I agree!
My grandma would whirl them in a blender and make pear sauce cake. Which I loved more than applesauce cake.
Thank you AG!
Yep. Time for me to go thru my stock. TY
I mark with a market on top of each can. Very easy then to see the date without looking for it with magnifiers. I opened geen beans from 2011 and it was delicious. Thanks for the useful videos, AG, I wouldn't have come so far if it wasn't for your channel.
Great tip with the marker!
Could also inspect the inside of can for seam discolorations, just to be sure.
NEVER BUY POP-TOP CANS
Many foods there is no choice.
Lot of brands only make pop top cans so if you want certain things canned you have no other option.
I always buy pop-top cans, and I prefer them. If I could get ALL my canned food with pop-tops, I would. Never had a problem with them.
Just about every can is pop up
I have started keeping my canned fruit separated from my other pantry items as they are the worst offenders for this. That way I can keep an eye on them better. I may put tomato products and canned artichoke in the same place later. Cans are such a problem. I don't think those K**** cans are made as good these days. Try squeezing them while at the store - sometimes you can hear them sucking air. Are the "name brand" cans made better (always and for sure)? It is a dilemma, you can get twice the food by purchasing the store brand but it does no good if it goes bad.
I have lost very little so far.
Luckily!
I've never thought about dehydrating from canned. Something I'll have to try.
It's simple. Here is a link to my video. czcams.com/video/XS8QhNFabZ0/video.html
My local Walmart had some Hillshire farms sliced chicken with sell by dates a month over ... check dates on everything these days nobody is half $#@ doing their job anymore.
Granny I love this video thank you 🙏🏻 for sharing it 🙏🏻✝️☮️Happy Mother Day Granny 💐🌹🌺💜💗💙❤️🍀🫂🥰
You are so welcome.
Sara Lee Bagels are now 5 in a package, not 6 that's shrinkflation. ❤😅
Wow, I have not bought bagels in a while.
Completely off the subject 😊, but something I have noticed over the last few months, especially with canned soup, is that there seems to be more liquid than solid contents. Definitely less meat. I know that some canned meats will list on the label the net weight and the drained weight, so you know there is an ounce of liquid. It would be nice if they would all be able to do that.
I think that, too. Also there seems to be a lack of flavor in a lot of foods.
Wow great idea! About dehydrating canned food!!
Here is a link to my video on how I dehydrated canned fruit. czcams.com/video/XS8QhNFabZ0/video.html
I've had trouble with tomato soup. The can didn't reach its expiration date but it still exploded.
Wow, thanks for the warning.
Thanks AG!!! Great video!! Happy Saturday
Same to you!
I haven’t been checking, my prepping pantry, for weeks, too busy, but God willing, I will give it, a good check.
Thank you, for sharing.
🙏🌷👍✨☘️💫🪴❤️
Glad you are keeping busy, and know that God is there.
Goodmorning AG😊😊😊
Thanks, AG!
ok so just a side note the best by date is a real date. I know that some food will last longer that the date on the can but I personally stretched it to far. A can of premade cooed beans was 2 years past the date and I cooed and ate it not thinking to look at the date. No I did not get food posing or botulism and YES I did heat the beans before eating them however a day later A tooth that had a cavity in it became inflamed and turned into an infection. NO BS the dam dentist refused to pull it gave me antibiotics instead. I had a Week of instance tooth pain due to the infection and although the antibiotic did "solve the problem" It goes to show that disregarding the best by date can cause problems for sure.
Thanks AG❤
Good video, thanks for sharing YAH bless !
Great reminder!
Glad you think so!
Thanks AP
You're welcome!
Brave woman eating them peaches !
I would take the juice and make popsicles
I can almost guarantee when the SHTF and people are starving they will take a chance and eat that bulging expired can of fruit. Unfortunately many won't make it past the first month.
I would be willing to share the bulging cans with the zombies!!
@@AlaskaGranny hahahaha funny

Wow, how disappointing. Walmart should issue you a full refund.
😁☕👍 Great job Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Canned fruit is mostly from China. Dole(in Central California) use to send their fruit out on ships middle of Pacific Ocean and it was processed by China. Not sure what they do now. Thank goodness I don't like canned fruit(except pineapple).
