  • In this video I unbox the Vevor Beehive Starter Kit and take it for a spindrive. I also install a swarm of bees that landed in one of my traps several weeks ago. I had quite a mess on my hands! 🫣🤨😩😁

    Man I hate it when I forget about the traps and the bees build beneath the frame, but at the same time, it's great to see them build all that comb. God's peace brother.

      Haha, yes Jeff! What a mess, huh? 🤦🏼‍♂️ I was able to salvage a fair amount of the brood and harvest some beautiful new wax though. Cheers!

    I have bought the same hive. I have yet to get any Bees into it yet, but I couldn't resist the viewing windows. 🐝

    I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that drops the frames

    Went ahead and just ordered it..they should give u an affiliate link.. I’ll also keep updated as well how it works.. got my mom into bee keeping this year and only has a deep atm but bees bee busy and she running out of room.. Pretty sure she’ll enjoy the viewing windows. My question to you is how to deal with small hives Beetles haven’t used pesticides yet but running out of options of how to deal with these things this year.. last question would u cut a notch in the top cover?

      Hello! Glad you enjoyed the video. The links in the description are affiliate links. 🙂. Very cool that your mom is beekeeping as well. I wish more people would get into this wonderful adventure. As for SHB, I just don’t have to deal with them. I’ve seen maybe 5 this year. I attribute this to strong, healthy colonies and also location of the hives. It’s very important to have morning sun. SHB hate light. Make sure your colonies are not located in dark, shaded areas and are getting plenty of morning sun. I have fellow beek friends that use the beetle traps with oil in them. The ones that go between frames. I’m sure there are several CZcams videos out there on how to use them. Best of luck!

    Agree with you on the window placement. I expected it to be on the side. Makes more sense to me. Would be nice to have both.
    Interesting they used fir. I wonder if there is a benefit or if that was a business decision.

      Thanks. And I am assuming it was a business decision. I would think pine is cheaper but then again these are made overseas.

      By looking at the grain ,I’m thinking it’s cedar

    Did you have many foragers go back to the swarm trap location?

    • @beesintheweeds
      @beesintheweeds  Před 2 měsíci

      I did not as I made sure to close them up the evening before. Of course there were still a few that went back. They cleared off after about a day.

      @beesintheweeds  Před 29 dny

      Yes, they are Langstroth frames. The kit includes both deeps for the brood chamber and mediums for the super. Hope this helps!

    The flaw with these wax coated hives is that they are quick dipped and wax has not penetrated wood.Wax need to be 300 degrees to penetrate wood. 2 months in the elements and the wax wears off and you need to paint after 1 season. Bees don't like observation ports and is a problem spot and allows rain/ moisture to collect within the hive and is only a gimmick. Of Course they call these starter hives and that is true. It is just to start because bees will out grow this in no time and you'll have to add boxes a swarm or Nuc out grows a single deep in 3-4 weeks during April/ May

      Good feedback, thank you! I'm not that familiar with the wax dipping process. I have watched a few videos Kamon has done. Are you certain Vevor uses a quick dip method? It's also the first time I've had a hive with an observation window. If I need to move the bees to another box I certainly will. Kind of fun to play around with these things.

      A solution to the plexiglass leaking would be to just back caulk the plexiglass. Problem solved.

    • @davidpotts3844
      @davidpotts3844 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@beesintheweeds Kamon has posted videos on wax dipped boxes and explaining that unless wax is around 300 degrees, wax doesn't penetrate into the wood. and did state that the wax coated hives sold are not being dipped with wax being at such high temps. for complete penetration and just more or less an outer coating. They look good for retail sales but wears off quickly.
      I have watched videos regarding observation ports and again in these videos they explain how these ports will collect and hold moisture in between the wood access and plexiglass and during winter in colder climates will cause heat loss, moisture intrusion and over work the bees to maintain internal temps. These designs are just gimmicks to sell the product and designed for people and not really the bees. Vevor sent you the hive to try out and give feedback so you'll just have to see how well the hive bodies do. Nothing better than having another hive to house bees.

      @@davidpotts3844 Excellent info, thank you David! I will definitely keep everyone posted on how the hive performs, lasts, and upholds through the winters here in Kentucky. Thanks for the feedback! Much appreciated.
