Maybe I should give more context. If you didn't know... In Japan, this happens close to every single day, in some train line. Usually during peak hours. You end up being crammed into a packed train for an hour or more, and you virtually can't go anywhere for hours. Things start running again after station workers who never signed up for any of this finishes cleaning up, then the trains start running... gradually. If you know Tokyo, cars, ubers or Taxi aren't much of an option in these situations, not to mention being locked in a train in the first place.
What I wanted to convey in the beginning was that I was really tired of the entire situation, and I was coping with everything from thinking a lot about the person taking his own life to thousands of visually frustrated people working around this situation repeatedly in their daily life, including me. So yes, based on this, let me say it again to make it clear, we all took a "L" that day. From the idea that sparked into our minds about suicide, to Japan's financial capital Tokyo haulting for a bit.
I joke about situations that I'm put in, in which I'm literally powerless. Because there's literally nothing I can do about it. I wasn't trying to earn anyone's sympathy, I was just putting it out there that I had an abnormal and somewhat stressful morning. Maybe breezing over this on a vid wasn't the best decision, but it was an attempt at communicating anything else than photography, and telling myself I can move on now after everything that happened.
And yes, of course I feel bad for the person. I had a good 2 hours in the train and the station thinking about life in Japan, mental health and our social economy here. And maybe it wasn't conveyed well in the video... through my sarcastic, unapologetic comment. But I opted not to dive too deep because I didn't want to make the video about a serious issue, which clearly (read my comment section for all videos) isn't perceived to be aligned with my videos on this channel.
It's a traumatic experience for many people- like the people who see this happening in front of their eyes, the train station workers, and maybe even somebody that missed a day of being with their loved ones because the train wasn't moving.
To provide even more context just to make sure people understand where I'm coming from... Although I'm fluent in English I've never lived in an English speaking country. I've spent 28/29 years of my life in Japan. So... I apologize if I wasn't aware of the social/cultural norms that my subscribers live by, I understand that many of you are in the US or Europe. I study a lot and keep up with everything going on overseas, but sadly this was an issue too unique to Japan.

I edited this pinned comment as well (which, to be transparent I toned down a bit) since some of the comments I was addressing are now deleted by myself.

Give your head a shake mate. No one said anything about praying for anyone (not that I can see). All you did was convey that you were experieincing rage and inconvenience and then try to turn it on people that commented, acting like we have a problem with ego?? Just keep diggn.....
Not to get into a stupid internet argument but I do think it’s fair to say that nobody’s brought up praying for anybody or anything of that sort - it’s just that suicide jokes generally aren’t something most people are cool with, much less in a photography video. Of course it’s frustrating dealing with something like this regularly and I don’t know what that’s like but I don’t think mentioning how annoyed you were that someone killed themself is particularly necessary. Still love your videos and obviously this didn’t come from a place of malice, but still
First of all, I LOVE your photos. That's why I'm gonna say this, thinking it's in you interest.
Having lived in Japan I know your way of thinking is mainstream (and in stark contrast with the American way of thinking about this stuff). So it's understandable why you said what you said, but not for your English-speaking audience. Making up excuses (or worse, attacking your audience) won't help you for the same reason, so... own it, say you where out of line in the next video, that you shouldn't have said that, even as frustrated and stressed as you felt, announce that you'll delete this video, leave up the apology video and go on
Ok here's where I have to defend my friend a bit. It's absolutely a very difficult topic to discuss..but I think it's unfair to judge Ulysses too harshly on this. We all know he's a good guy. Theirs nothing we don't know about his character as a person based on all the videos he's shared with us in the past. He's always been honest, thats his thing. Yes maybe he couldn't have spoken about it in the first place but he wants to bring us into his daily life a bit. And that's both brave and really fucking risky.. we're all human and we all know we can't cast the first stone.
SO..that being said, please please everyone realize, the suicide rate in Japan is abysmal. Under the flashy lights and loud happy commercialism, a thick layer of depression and emotional detachment exists for only those to view who actually lived here for years can experience. And one of the most "popular" (sorry to use that word) ways to commit suicide is to do "jinshin jiko".. aka. "Human accident" which is what literally comes on the train display when someone has jumped in front to kill themselves. For the sake of keeping things "proper" this is the translation given to us. And this word is just thrown around so often for decades. We don't even have to describe what happens. You just say "jinshin jiko" and everyone knows exactly what you are referring to.
And why does someone chose to do it in this way? Yes, because they are mad at the world. Some of them have good reason to be. Some of them I truly feel immense pain for. But let's be clear. They know if they do it in this way it will disrupt everyones lives. Thats part of the goal. They are mad at society so they take it out on society.
Now live with this being your daily reality of living in Japan. You have weather delays, maintenance delays and people killing themselves delays. Hundreds a year and going up since covid. Please don't blame too harshly individuals who speak on the issue casually. Even jokingly in a deprecating way, it's a freaking shit show. It's difficult for everyone to internalize an opinion on a daily basis.
Actually bringing it to everyones attention worldwide is very important. Japan should be doing more to prevent this. More walls and doors on open platforms, more security, more prevention and more awareness. As a Christian person myself I can pray and be respectful about the issue all I want but the reality is Japan needs to wake the fuck up on this and yes it's ok to be annoyed by it publicly.
I think your comment was understandable , even though others might disagree they should also be more empathetic on how other might react differently to those situations too

I feel, in India 28mm is still the way to go because of crowd in the streets. You cannot put all the elements you want in a single with a 40mm.

Hi Ulysses, I'm following Sammy from Hamburg, so I've seen you on his videos. Just thought I'd say hello. I'm an old age pensioner in UK, and I've been making photographs for 50 years, etc etc. Nice to meet you remotely. I like your pictures.
I’ve felt this way for a long time. For street shooting I usually use my Fujifilm X-E2 to shoot with the Fujinon 27mm pancake, on my full frame Sony A7II, I shoot manual with a vintage Konica Hexanon 40mm f1.8, great sleeper without much competition in the vintage lens field.
How are you getting on with your 27mm pancake lens? I am thinking of getting one, I also have the 35mm f1.4 and the 16mm f1.4 on the X-T30 which is also very small, so would suit the pancake too. I am also torn between the GR series too possibly instead of the pancake 27mm. Be interested to hear your opinion.

Great video, thank you. The thing about 28 mm is that it’s close to the iPhone. So people might actually be more used to shooting wide than medium (40mm).
Really helpful video, and thank you for the clear explanation. I am so attempted to buy a GR, but I don't know if right now is the best time to buy GR III? or, should I be waiting for GR IV? Or, is GR IV going to be so late just because of GR IIIx is just released?

I feel like there's one scenario which can be added in favor of the 40mm is if you like to go out and about on a trail or something, where the distance scale is relatively big, you may find yourself always a bit too far away from your subject if you use a wider lens. At least that's how I feel when I bring my 35mm with me on a hike instead of the 50mm. But that could just be me. I found myself seeing things in 50mm terms rather than 28 or 35.

Would you recommend the GRIIIx or GRIII and why? I'm leaning towards the GRIII due to having the ability to shoot wide and crop, but I'm unsure which to get for travel/everyday use cases.
Totally agree with the “across the table” example. I’m comfortable with 35mm at that distance, but longer gets cramped. Found out the hard way 50 is unusable.
It worries me how lightly a suicide is being taken nowadays. Poor guy, may he rest in peace

this was very helpful, im new to photography and tried the 40 mm ricoh since everyone was saying it is easier, but i felt that is was harder for all the like smartphone photos i would take, 40 mm seems like too much to think about and a lot more artistic in a way, so composing that shot becomes a little harder, better result in certain situations but not so convenient for someone coming from smartphone photography like me, the real question is when is ricoh going to make a interchangeable lens gr so this phenomenon can be ended
I feel you bro. When I first started I kept watching videos saying to get a 50mm 1.8 so I did. Although it was great for portraits, it was discouraging to use as a street lense, especially on a apsc LOL I always find myself having to step wayyyyy back on a 50mm and a 40mm as I eventually realized I liked a much wider focal length

28mm is my favorite focal length, and since I’m using a Panasonic S5, I often jump into APSC mode and suddenly I have a 42mm lens, so that is kind of the best of both worlds. As far as the person who jumped, rest in peace. No matter how many times it happens, it’s tragic, and just more evidence of how difficult it is for many people to get up every day and survive just normal things for other people. Peace

I love the 28mm myself. Truth be told it was my most used focal length. Partly because of having an 28-75, the Ricoh gr3 and the Leica Q I shoot with. I feel its great to get everything into the frame. But I am mostly a cityscape photographer. For portraits I always do take 85 or us my 24-70. I think I am starting to lean toward 35mm as my favorite now.
What camera and zoom lens do you use for this video? It looks good!
For a street camera a wide angle lens is always better than a trimmed midlevel 40mm lens. As long as you don't get fish eye you can capture great area in a 28mm lens. With a 40mm lens you probably can't take a useful shot in small areas like inside a train or bus or even in a small room.

Most of us shoot at a "28" everyday with our phones. So it isn't a stretch to use this focal length or is it more "difficult." If a "40" focal length looks "prettier" then I say - mission accomplished.
28mm is good when you are in dense areas with a lot going on and you can get into the “action”. Also true with a 35mm .
50mm is perfection for less dense situations .
There’s something really special about a 50mm. Not sure what it is but there is magic there. If I’m too close to shoot with a 50, unfortunately I will be missing that shot and I’m fine with that

40mm is better for abstract shots imo, but for documenting the street is better 28mm. You can alwas crop in a little bit, but you can't fisically go back on a narrow street
I'm really heartened to read that you feel the gravity of that death. My brother committed suicide, inconveniencing nobody but devastating many. It's a terrible truth that this is commonplace in so.many cultures but that doesn't make it acceptable or trivial, as it seems you've been told.
awesome video. I like my GR III and it's a great daily compact all purpose camera for me, especially with the snap focus. I was contemplating getting a GR IIIx, but simply can not convince myself to fork out the cash and also I can use my Fuji XT-4 for that focal length. Your tips are spot on when it comes to indoor confine space living in an Asian country. Also my take on the 28mm is that you can always crop the picture, but with a 40mm, you can not expand beyond the photo. Always enjoy your videos. Cheers and happy holidays.

Everybody acts different which doesn‘t mean that there are not troubled by suicide of other people. People are just so quickly offended. Im saying this as a person whos uncle was commiting suicide last year. Look forward Ulysses, the guys from Steidl photo books already looking to publish a book with you. Not a follower but just came across your “quitting” video and had to look up what the “issue” was. So here I am.
I will not say that I blame you for what you said. As you elaborated these situations happen way too frequently in Japan to where many including and especially Japanese people find it to be mondain.
Many of the negative comments against you are I assume from people who do not live in Japan or have very little knowledge of the life in Japan.
That being said suicide is a very very tough situation to deal with. On one hand we can’t help but feel sorry and hurt by what would push a human being to such a destructive behavior.
But also we cannot ignore the fact that suicide is maybe the most selfish of acts a human being can engage in. It destroys and disrupt way too many lives, from families of course to a multitude of strangers completely detached from the event or the individual.
Everybody likes to be offended nowadays and common sense and rational feelings and behavior is a thing of the past. We like to blame others for their reactions as they did with yours but nobody commenting is able to say without a shadow of a doubt or any certainty what their reactions would be to a similar scenario. It shows how individuals love to pass blame, criticize and finger point others, acting as holier than thou … I want to believe that it is coming from a place of not knowing themselves how to deal with such despair and even maybe a coping mechanism? … but sadly I have to believe it’s the day and age in which we live in where everybody has something to say and usually it isn’t much or positive at all.
Because people lives SUCK!
Nobody wants to admit it. Everybody puts on a big show, a smily face, a facade but even before Covid hit humanity was depressed and beat up. Today more than ever.
you do not have to quit. You explained yourself. You made amend. And if people cannot find a way to forgive you (not that you have to be forgiven honestly. But if they think you need to …) then they are no better than what they blame you for. Lack of understanding and compassion.
Ultimately. You aren’t at fault, they aren’t at fault, the poor soul isn’t at fault …. Japan however has been dealing with serious mental health issues for many decades and it’s not getting any better. If anybody should be blamed here it’s the Japanese government and their lack of action to remedy these ongoing tragedies.

Glad to hear you say that because I decided on the GR iiix . I don’t have any experience shooting on a 40 prime but I have extensive experience at 55. I hope I find it different enough to be its own thing.

A 40mm doesn’t make things prettier same as a 28mm doesn’t make them ugly. 40mm shows the world as it is and a 28mm pushes it outward. I know people what look better in a tight closeup on a 28mm than on a 90mm.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but sometimes we look at things from a standpoint of how our lives are being impacted by a situation.
There is nothing wrong with expressing dissatisfaction with your day being interrupted.
It doesn't mean you lack empathy. It means you are a human being and you can't expend that amount of emotional labor for every stranger that dies. You wouldn't be able to function.
Also, making jokes is how some people process their emotions. Seriously.

You lost your edge some time ago if judging from the recent photos we’ve seen from you and the videos which seem to be parody of reality. Parody is often entertaining except when the parody becomes a parody of itself. There is considerable scope and opportunity for social documentary work in Japan. The inherent pressure in Japanese society is unique onto itself. Documentary photography related to personal tragedies and inner conflicts which often lead to suicides for one thing. The camera is a powerful tool. I think your comment was not only insensitive, it seemed to show that you’re inured to such events that it can be spoken about carelessly. Like another leaf floating in the wind. Perhaps put the camera aside and just talk to people in trouble. Rather than making videos for a global audience and hawking prints.One’s humanity should shine through what one does or says.

I work in healthcare full time though I take 2 months off in a year and volunteer my services unpaid to do work for those who can’t afford decent health care. I lived for a year in Japan and observed society at large especially the fringes. Work often finished after 3 am those days and insomnia was a companion. Well I admit I do not know you. But shouldn’t someone doing sustainability work preserve their sanctity for human life no matter what the circumstances ?
