Gene Kelly is a Hollywood icon. Thank you for telling his story.
I agree
I read that his dancing in the scene when he was actually singing in the rain literally, he had a fever of 102 and did it anyway
have heard the same thing
Actors like the rest of us - sometimes ya just have to get a job done - sick or not 🥴
This is true. And the infection Kelly had resulted in a chronic sinus infection that weakened his already high thin Irish Tenor voice. His voice never did recover. Gene's younger brother Fred Kelly attested to this. Incidentally, Gene learned to tap dance from his younger brother Fred, but Gene went on to study classical ballet and just about every other form of dance, which gave his visionary artistry the direction it needed; Kelly went on to be a great choreographer, which was actually his true passion.
Few know that Gene's brother Fred was an excellent dancer as well. I grew up in Oradell, NJ and Fred Kelly had a dance studio on Kinderkamack Road. My cousins attended dance lessons there. Gene and Fred need to be remembered for their contributions to dance. Both amazing dancers and instructors. They will never be forgotten.
I knew you would eventually do the Gene Kelly house and so glad to see this. We used to drive by this house every morning taking the kids to school at El Rodeo, and always said good morning to Gene (in spirit). This is a true throw back to when iconic celebrities actually lived in the Flats of Beverly Hills, which were very modest homes compared to today, right on the street with no security walls and gates. And to think he lived there for 60 years, and as recent as 1996 you could have seen him in his yard while driving by. I often cite Singin' in the Rain as THE greatest movie of all time - a movie about the movies, with absolutely flawless songs, dance routines and acting. Gene was as cool and classy as it ever got in Hollywood, an era that will never be repeated.
Gene Kelly is a national treasure!
Brilliant dancer 💗
I love and admire Gene Kelly. Thank you for this vlog. Amazing talent. I remember at a tribute to him Olivia Newton John spoke. With a huge smile she said, “No matter what else happens in my career, I can say I got to dance with Gene Kelly.”
Gene was my first celebrity crush. I loved him and Judy Garland
Really sad about Gene Kelly's agent. The agent thought of Gene as a conmodity not a person or a great historical and artistic creator for film.
The agent had the depth of a puddle.
Gene has a unique, lasting and significant role in Hollywood films.
Well said! Not only is that agent (and others like him) shallow as puddles as you put it, but are badly mistaken! It would be like saying that nobody cares about history or historical figures. So inane.
sadly a lot of famous people have agents and mangers like that just ask a lot of music groups
It was actually NOT Gene Kelly's agent who said those things; it was a woman who was an editor for a publishing house to whom Ward Kelly had submitted a rough draft outline for a proposed book in the late 1990s after Kelly died. It has been rumored that Ward Kelly's writing skills were not that impressive and that the editor took a hostile attitude when the editor suspected that Ward Kelly was less interested in documenting her late husband's life than she was in what kind of money she was going to be promised ahead of publication of any book. Take these claims of back stabbing with a grain of salt. When Gene Kelly was dying, she fired ALL of his old associates, cut him off from his own family, fired his lifelong dearly loved and trusted secretary, Lois McClelland, even fired all his lawyers AND Gene's longtime physician. She is not the most trustworthy source for accurate information. When Gene died, she had his body cremated the same day, and informed his beloved children that there would be no funeral, no memorial, and no grave site. His three children, Kerry, Timothy, and Bridget, were reduced to planting a tree in their father's memory at a park near his home. All of Gene Kelly's relatives hate her, and she had treated them shabbily. Gene's kids had to sue her twice to get any part of their father's estate: Ward Kelly was instructed in the late 1990s by the courts to share part of Gene's estate, but in Nov 2017, they sued her again because she never gave them one dime of it. After Gene died, she took the money, bought a large French chateau in the middle of Beverly Hills, then went to Europe to buy hundreds-of-dollars worth of antiques to fill it. So, again, I caution you: take what she says with a grain of salt.
That is NOT true. Those of us who grew-up watching him dance, perform, & sing loved Gene Kelly to the very end. His widow held him high in her heart as well. His agent was a PUTZ.
@@kathe.o. He was retired when I became aware of him, but he was wonderful. On the Town is so much fun.
Really excellent vlog.
I remember real well the night his house burned. Mr. Kelly was standing out in front in just a cap and a bathrobe right there on the sidewalk as the media trucks pulled up and started filming him and the burning house on live local TV. He spoke to the reporters and said that he mourned the loss of his Oscars the most. That made much of southern California cry seeing him say that standing there in his robe as the fire raged on behind him. He was after all still a local guy. So pitiful. This terrible event made the news for a few days here in L.A.
I also recall him trying to get his Oscars replaced but at the time to no avail surprisingly.
I have always since wondered if they ever did finally give him a replacement Oscar(s). I'd like to know.
These days the Academy does in fact issue replacement awards if need be, but they charge big money to do that.
Great vlog Jordan.
I wondered that as well. I sort of assumed they would just reissue him new ones. Shows what they’re really made of if they didn’t care!
he did get a replacement oscar the next year
Yes, the Academy did replace his Oscars
Hollywood is a tough town with many abuses. Makes me glad I never wasted my time, money and energies in the business. The price of fame is very demanding and cruel.
Yes at the Academy Awards the next year they honored Gene Kelly with a new Oscar in replacement of his old!
Gene Kelly was an amazing director dancer and actor. I always enjoyed anything that he was in, he was always a cordial warm personality that was the better part of Hollywood. Debbie Reynolds and Gene were good friends and often at events together. I didn't know about Gene's home burning to the ground along with all his Hollywood regalia posters and Awards. He was always nice to all his fans and very approachable at the Bob Hope Desert Classic golf tournaments. He was the Best! Thank you Jordan 🇯🇴 for showing us his former home.
It was always my intention to see or meet every MGM star while growing up. I did see Debbie 3X's, never got to see Mickey. But while dating my future hub & I would drive to Dallas from my hometown of Waco, Tx to see musicals in Dallas. I was planning our future ones & Gene Kelly was going to be in one & my hub resisted. I said OK, I will go alone, he said no you want so we did see Gene. He only had one small dance scene(very small) in the show but he got winded due to his age, he stopped the show, someone from the wings handed him a towel, he stood on stage and just talked to the audience. It was such a thrill. My hub was a fan from then on. I love that great memory. Thanks for showing us his house.
I so wish there had been some kind of board or historical committee that could have saved so many of the golden age of Hollywood's homes, from demolition and/or remodeling/ additions, etc. We have lost sooooooo many, it's such a shame :(
I absolutely love Gene Kelly. He was such a great dancer, actor and very very easy on the eyes
I went to the same grade school that Kelly attended in Pittsburgh. St. Raphael's School was built around 1916 and is still there. I attended 1st through 4th grade in the early to mid sixties. My father had said he remembered Kelly who lived a block away from where he grew up in the Bloomfield District of Pittsburgh.
A very nice tribute for him, Thanks for another great vlog. And for the record, many many people still have love for him! He is one of our Hollywood Treasures💕♥️💕
I still care about Gene Kelly. He was a marvelous actor, a sensational dancer and an all around great dad.
What a phenomenal all rounder Gene Kelly was! Very enjoyable video Jordan Thank-you so much. Jah 💞 to you.
Pretty remarkable guy
Love learning new things about old Hollywood! That is a great house and I’m glad it is still being well loved. Gesundheit to little Jah 😉💖
Wonderful vlog....and that agent was wrong, many of us care about Gene Kelly and how he died. ❤️
Please see my comments above. It was NOT Gene's agent who said this.
@@starlightinkwell , where are your comment's? It was his agent according to Jordan!
@@FreddieandBrenda If you click the "Reply" that follows several of the posts here, you will find my sometimes lengthy comments.
Gene was such a renaissance man. :) I always lived him, and appreciate you speaking a bit more about his life and past.
Good morning Jordan and Jah. Thank you so much for doing a video about Gene Kelly. I am a fan of his. I love Gene Kelly❤. He is my all time favorite actor. I really enjoy watching your videos. I hope you and Jah have a great day🌄🙂🐕.
That JAH is something eles, he's too cute 🖤🐾
Love your vlog, Jordan! Your intro is wonderful; you put a smile on my face when I see cartoon Jah wiggling over the Hollywood walk of stars and your sweet face peering over your trademark green sunglasses.
I appreciate your thorough research on your subjects and the passion, respect and joy you bring to all your vlogs.
Thank you for putting your heart and passion in your work giving the world your special gift. 🧡💥🐶
You inspired me to read Todd Fisher's book. Evidently, Gene didn't think Debbie Reynolds could pull off the dancing ... until she did. Great book, btw.
Never knew Gene did all that, that's awesome! Thanks for putting this up Jordan, I'm learning things about Hollywood that I never knew.
I love Gene Kelly, He was one of the greatest dancer ever. ❤️🌹
I loved Gene Kelly. I didn't realize he directed Singing in the rain. Thank you for this.
He co-directed with Stanley Donen.
He also directed and I think Choreographed the movie " Hello Dolly" with Barbera Streisand (1969). One of my favorite movie musicals.......The scene in Harmonia Gardens when Dolly enters is just ICONIC , and the dancing is fantastic!
@@deirdreevangelista856 Kelly definitely directed Hello Dolly, but the choreography is , who also did Guys and Dolls.
Gene Kelly was the real deal. His rebuilt home is nice. Jordan, do you know if his widow still lives there? Do you know if she’s still working on that book about him or has she given up on that? His son was his dad’s hero for getting him out of the house safely. He knew how to do things the right way. Thank you for this today. God bless you and Jah
Please see my comments above. His widow sold the house as soon as Gene died, bought herself a large French chateau in the middle of Beverly Hills, and went to Europe soon after his death to buy hundreds-of-thousands of dollars of expensive antiques to fill it.
@@starlightinkwell thank you for answering my question.
Read the book "He's got Rhythm"
The Life and Career of Gene Kelly.
By Cynthia and Sara Brideson.
It's very informative and enjoyable.
@@elissaschornstein9399 Unfortunately, as much as I love Cynthia and her late sister Sarah, out of the few bios that have been written, the Brideson's book is full of errors. Cliive Hirschhorn's 1974 bio was the only one Gene Kelly was involved with at all. Alvin Yudkoff's "bio" was based on Hiirshhorn's book, but should have been labeled as a "speculative biography" because Yudkoff fills it with flights of fantasy about what Gene was thinking or saying, which he could not possibly have known because he never met Kelly and Gene was already dead when Yudkoff wrote the book; it is an entertaining read, and Yudkoff did have input from Gene's longtime, beloved secretary Lois McClelland, which Hirschhorn did not because he had the living breathing Gene Kelly to interview, but it certainly is not a reliable bio. Hirschhorn, even with the direct interviews with Gene Kelly, still got many things wrong, including in the very first paragraph of the book, Kelly's birthdate, which immediately makes it suspect in any historian's eyes. Earl Hess and Pratibha A. Dabholkar's newest bio of Kelly, published in Oct 2020, is a very scholarly approach to Kelly's life and work, but it is a bit of a dry read. Nevertheless, it is fully researched, so has more reliable info than any of the other books. The Brideson sisters took a lot of the info for their book from Hirschhorn's and from other unreliable sources. But their love of Gene Kelly spurred them to write it in the first place. As soon as Kelly's widow found out about the Brideson sisters plans to publish a biography of Gene Kelly, she threatened to sue over one thing or another, so Cynthia said there were things they had to drop or change. Ward Kelly also went after the late Sue Cadman in Great Britain who spent years doing research and became well known and respected for her wonderful blog, Gene Kelly: Creative Genius. Cadman's work is now used and cited by historians and scholars. Ward Kelly threatened Cadman, who took down her blog, but then was informed that Ward Kelly had no legal standing to claim copyright infringement against her. Cadman tried to get the entirety of her wonderful blog back up on the internet, but she died in Sept 2017 before she could restore it all. What has been preserved from Cadman's blog is now carefully guarded by a network of Gene Kelly fans from many places around the globe, including Holland, England, and the U.S. Kelli Marshall, a university professor who teachers film history tried to publish a book about Gene Kelly's work as a director, but before the book was even finished, Patricia Ward Kelly sued claiming copyright infringement, which she does constantly. The judge threw out Ward Kelly's case saying she could not possibly claim "copyright infringement" when she didn't even know what was going to be in the book because it hadn't even made it to publication yet. But University Press and Kelli Marshall dropped their plans to publish because they were not about to get involved in some drawn out legal fight that felt like a waste of their time and Marshall's and University Press' resources. Patricia Ward Kelly has been the biggest obstacle in the way of a definitive biography being published about one of the most important artists of the 20th Century. It is a shame, and Gene Kelly scholars rightly have nothing but distrust and contempt for the woman.
Gene Kelly was the epitome of dance just as Fred Astaire was. That agent was just wrong. Thank you Jordan for the wonderful vlog today. Informational and entertaining as always. My favorites of his movies are Singing in the rain and Xanadu.
The agent did NOT say that. Please see all my comments above.
@@starlightinkwell I did watch the video and at 14:47 minutes Jordan says that Mr. Kelly's wife contacted his agent and the agent said no one cares about Gene's end of life.
My parents were from Madison, WI, and my mom took dancing lessons as a kid at Kehl School of Dance from Leo Kehl who had actually hired Gene Kelly as an instructor for a short time at the school while Kelly went to school in Ripon. Leo Kehl also taught Shirley Temple the drum dance in her movie "The Littlest Rebel" and agents in Hollywood wanted him to move out there but he liked to teach dance in Madison with his family and turned it down. I took some tap lessons from Leo Kehl's daughter back in the 1980's, which was so fun. Their family is still teaching - I believe they are on their fifth generation now. Anyone can go take dance lessons - it is open to the public. Also fun fact: Fred Kelly - Gene Kelly's younger brother - taught John Travolta how to dance as a kid. Love Gene Kelly movies.
When I meet Mr. Kelly he was so very nice. I was able to work with him on "Xanadu" and watch him direct. The scene where he and Olivia danced was filmed in one shot. At first the cameraman told Mr. Kelly it couldn't be done. I saw Mr. Kelly slowly rise from his director's chair, turn to the cameraman and said "Yes, it can. You figure it out." And with that he turned and went to his tailor. I knew all that had to be done was to mount the camera onto a boom. I guess the guy was just too lazy to do it. Later when Mr., Kelly returned the camera had indeed been placed onto a boom. I shall never forget meeting & talking with Mr. Kelly. What a GREAT Man & Star. };-)>
I loved donald o connors dance scence where he runs up the wall in "singin in the rain " amazing
Jordan your a breath of fresh air for me. Not sure why, but I always feel a little better after watching one of your videos.
May life treat you kind, God bless.
I love Gene Kelly. What a talented man. I feel bad his original home burned down and he lost his awards and memorabilia. More importantly, thank God he and his family escaped the fire. thanks for a great vlog!
He is a Legend. One if the greatest ever. Nice vlog 👍🏻😎
Thank you for honoring Gene Kelly my absolute favorite dancer!of all time. Your description of him is perfect!
It goes to show how very short sighted Hollywood can be. I found this very interesting and many many people love learning about notable people in their “heyday” as well as after. What does that agent think about biographies of people who are past, as if no one cares about history?! Pretty shallow and heartless. What’s worse is that this was someone who knew Gene and that’s his attitude! Fortunately there are smarter people like you and Patricia who help us celebrate such a great talent! Love the image of the two of them eating hotdogs and watching the World Series. ThankY0U.
Gene Kelly is my favorite, next to Errol Flynn. Gene was an incredible man, dancer and seemingly a true gentleman. Thanks so much Jordan. xx I really enjoyed this one.
Wow ... his Agent had a lot of nerve👎🏽... I’m much younger than his era but watching Gene Kelly movies with my mom and sister I will forever remember 💜 his dancing 🕺🏽 and acting was impeccable. And Yes Mr. Agent worth CARING ABOUT‼️
This is not true. Please see my reply to Sue Prov's comments above.
I think everyone watching this is much younger than his era not too many old timers left.
Great Vlog! What a guy!! Yeah his first wife Betsy gave him a daughter Kerry and his second wife Jeanne Coyne gave him a son Tim(which you mentioned) and his youngest daughter Bridget. Really great job on this one!
I absolutely LOVE Gene Kelly! Thank you for showing us his lovely home and telling his story, Jordan. As always, another well-researched and beautifully presented vlog!!!
Gene was an amazing person. Such a great actor and dancer. Good vlog Jordan. I like watching when Jah is at the dog park and how he reacts with the other dogs.
He was a Classic ❤️❤️❤️
Great video :)
I always wanted to become a tap dancer when I was a kid because of Gene Kelly. He was amazing!!!! He is multi-talented and such a Legend.
You're a master storyteller Jordan , thank you for another great vlog.
I once saw some pictures of the burned house, which I cannot find anymore on Google. The basic structure was still intact, but was large;y gutted. From what I understand they rebuilt it to look like it was before. There are some great pics of the interior, pre-fire, where you can see his wife in the upstairs bedroom, and you can see the ceiling matches the shape of that front roof. Also, Gene is part of the Forever Beverly Hills Club - meaning he died AT HOME in 90210. As did Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, Rock Hudson and Sergei Rachmaninoff. Frank Sinatra would have died at his 90210 home but was rushed to Cedars Sinai, which is where so many famous people have died.
Yes but there is no grave for Gene in Hollywood whereas there is for Dean martin & Frank Sinatra!!
Congrats on your new home purchase! You seem like a very nice person may God continue to bless you each an everyday
I love that you mix in some dog park action.
You really let your little dog' s character shine! Thank you for all you share with us.
Gene Kelly will ALWAYS hold a special place in my heart! On my very first trip to California, after just graduating from University, the film Xanadu, starring Gene Kelly, was playing on the p[lane on our way to the Golden State. It's a long story - but - that first trip to California was one of the most special and magical times of my life. And it all began with Gene Kelly! Thanks for posting this Jordan - much appreciated!
Jordan - Thank you for sharing this. My heart goes out to him and the way the Hollywood movie machine treated someone who gave us so much entertainment and lined their greedy pockets for years - what disrespect. Not so much the physical home but to have your memories and memorabilia wiped out - so sad. I don't remember if you said. Did his first wife pass away or were they divorced? Did either child follow in his entertainment footsteps? Have a great day, my friend. Blessings-Judith 🎵🎭
Jeanne starb 1973 an Leukemie. Über seine dritte Frau, die er 1990 geheiratet hatte, sprechen wir erst garnicht.
One of my first screen idols. I'm amazed how you can stroll around and film a house in Beverly Hills. Years ago I went on a tour and they wouldn't slow down for a second or two so you could take a picture. They told us they weren't allowed to make a stop in BH, they had to keep the vehicle moving.
Hi Jordan loved this, watched them all as a boy with mom who was a big fan.
Gene Kelly directed a movie I love----A Guide For The Married Man . It's absolute comedy GOLD
Very interesting I love hearing all the backstories of these famous people. What a gorgeous house
You are amazing! I love watching your channel it's the best. You nailed it❤❤❤🇺🇸🎥🎥
Us Pittsburgh people hold Gene Kelly with the most respect. I'm not of that generation but seeing him in Xanadu first made an impression on me. Going back and watching other movie made me respect his art and looks. He's definitely a treasure.
I wished the Heinz Museum would make him more of a presence there. I was disappointed that there was one little piece of him. There was an entire floor set aside for Mr. Rodgers, not that he didn’t deserve it either...
👍👍👍☮️
I wish with all my heart that Gene Kelly was honored in East Liberty & Pittsburgh where he began his life & had his Dance Studio as Mister Rogers has been honored in Pittsburgh with a Statue, but that will never happen because although Pittsburgh Officials began that process for Gene, Patricia Ward Kelly made it known she would personally have it taken down!!
@@Cardoo46You don't understand that his his widow threatens the life of anyone that even thinks of honoring Gene's life!!
@@cynthiawilliams737 Geez! I don’t understand that??!!! What the heck is wrong with her? I know she’s young enough to be his daughter but you would think she would be happy to have him be honored 🤨
The co-director of "Singin in the Rain" was Stanley Donen, who was pretty famous in his own right.
His wife has a Facebook page dedicated to Gene. A new generation has discovered him.
Thanks. I will look it up.
That "agent", is an ass! How rude and wrong he was about people's interest in Mr. Gene Kelly! Great tribute to EVH! ❤🙏🍀
This is not true: it was NOT his agent who said this. It was an editor for a publishing house. Please see all my comments in replies to above posts.
Thank you Jordan for a great vlog Gene Kelly loved to see him sing & dance great smile sorry to hear his agent didn't care about him only the $$ but Us his fans will always remember gene will never be forgotten
Beautifully done! Loved Gene Kelly. How sad that his life was nothing to those who ran the studios.
Hi Jordan, well, all day and FORTY TAKES for the 'Good Morning' dance and they kept the first one, I'd be so mad. I like that he made annotations in books about him like 'that never happened', 'this is wrong' etc. It's a pity more of the old Hollywood greats didn't do that with books written about them, and then we really would know fact from fiction. Great vlog Jordan.
Mary and I are movie buffs and that is how we found your channel and you have kept our interest for all time, we enjoyed this video because we like Gene Kelly and why are we not surprised that people in the business throw away the people who make the movies what they are today. His agent should have put in is place for the meanness he showed and he should be ashamed of his self, but sadly I am sure he was not. Gene Kelly was a very talented man and contributed to Hollywood in a very big way. It's ashamed we throw away lots of our older citizens. Thank your for sharing Jordan we really enjoyed this video.
💋Always the best narration on every vlog! Already knew about Gene Kelly now I know more. Thank you again for your superb videos. Continued Blessings to u and Jah. ~Love&Light💖Carli
On the town best musical ever to come out of states in my eyes Gene Kelly will always be the best you have done it again dude top marks 🤘🏴
Agreed. On The Town is a dvd that I re-watch and never get bored
Thanks for a great job. Learn a lot that I did not know. Keep up the good work
Totally love Gene Kelly. We share the same birthday. He was so handsome. His dancing skills were fantastic and l still love watching his movies. I miss the movie stars from the good old days.
Gene Kelly fan from way back don't know all that much about him but I really love this dancing
Thanks Jordan!! Gene Kelly's great legacy of work will never be forgotten. Truly talented and driven personality.
I really enjoy your vlogs. Fred Astaire was the one who insisted and started the filming of the whole body when dancing.
I always loved seeing Gene on TV from a child,, he was a beautiful dancer, and so handsome...
Jordan that tribute to Eddie VanHalen was awesome. Be cool if you could vlog more about VH. Cheers James.

Wow, what a great video, Jordan. In addition to being very informative and entertaining, Gene’s story had drama, romance and pathos. Very well done 👍. One of my all time favs. Gene Kelly. What a legend of the classics.

Another fantastic and respectful vlog. 😊
Sad to hear how his agent reacted. How can anyone say that no one cares about Gene Kelly anymore? He was a genius and icon and that whole era is history that should be repeated but never will.
Keep on being you, Jordan! 🦴🐾❤️
His agent did NOT say it. Please see my many comments above.
What a sweet thing, to add that beautiful photo of Eddie.
I fell in love with Gene Kelly at a very young age and am still in love at 62. I thought he was the most handsome man I'd ever seen. I loved every movie I saw of his. Singin' In The Rain is a favorite as well as Brigadoon. He was an amazing dancer and singer. I loved his smile. I was devastated when I heard he had died.
I loved Gene Kelly. He was handsome and very talented. Never knew he had such a young wife. Sad about his agent.
Fantastic Vlog Jordan! Gene Kelly was such a talented man.
And of course it always makes my day to see Jah! Especially at the park ❣️❣️
Thanks Jordan, love Singing in the rain and Gene Kelley.
Very interesting I didn’t know much about Gene Kelly so this was very insightful 👍 thanks for sharing
Thank you for your respect for Gene Kelly and this vlog. I honestly did not know anything about him prior to 17 minutes ago (besides the Singing in the Rain song) but of course once again you have me like someone just from you sharing. Very sad to hear about his agent's attitude!
Ty for Sharing...
Gene Kelly!!! My favorite!!!! God Bless you Jah! and Jordan of course!
Absolutely amazing this is Win movie stars were really movie stars. They actually have real talent. What is out there nowadays I can’t even explain most of them can’t even play an instrument or sing. Great video
Another great vlog Jordan, sad to see how cold showbiz can be when stars pass away but great finding out about him and his life. Thank you 😀
The likes of Gene Kelly, will never fade from my memory. Thank you for checking out his residence even though it was rebuilt.
@pumpupjam9648 Das Wohnhaus von Gene Kelly wurde nicht umgebaut. Gene hat es naturgetreu für sich und seine Kinder wieder aufbauen lassen.
Well done Jordan, that was great.
