"There are no animals that we know about who can forgo sleep entirely."
*My neighbour's baby:* "Hold my milk bottle."
The question you should be asking is can we replace wakefulness?
I believe thats called death lol
Sleeping pills and anastetics exists.
Comma's are like a cheat code in life, you enter the combination of your head hitting something really hard, and bam, you unlock infinite sleep! XD
i've tried polyphasic sleep before. slept for two hours 3 to 4 times a day. while its effectively the same amount of sleep, it felt very different because a "day" didn't hold the same meaning, and time felt more like an even ever-flowing thing rather than something divided into hard-edged segments. it was better, but it doesn't work in a world where you're the only one to do it, so i quit.
I think those that can even try polyphasic sleep have to have a job that allowes them to sleep every 2 hours for 30 minutes a day. A luxury to most workers.
If you like being awake at night, try getting a night shift job. Not everyone sleeps at night and is awake all day.
Interesting...but...a good night's sleep is one of the greatest pleasures in life...
Not me, I wish I could have 6-8 extra hours of free time instead of sleep
Renan C Brazil yes
U r right
ammefan You probably spend too many hours at work and you dont feel like you have enough hours for yourself, isnt it?
I hate sleeping. I feel like I waste so much productive time asleep.
I love dreams! Sometimes I wish I would never wake up and could stay stuck in a dream for longer. The only way I would give up sleep and dreaming is if I could have wakeful dreams, but then odds are I would have died a long time ago thinking/dreaming I could fly down a mountain...
we could be more productive at work.... "work", ohhh, shut up you, we work enough already
Alanna Lopez Fact is the more hours you work the LESS efficient you become...
I actually searched what discotheque means. Haha. This channel deserves more subscribers.
oh wow... really?
look sleep for me is a way to escape the bullshit of this world dont try to take it away
Mr X YZ
Same 😂
i know how to replace sleep! go to settings and press "replace sleep with" click anything then press "save and exit"
Why are there adverts on this video when you're using license fee money to make it?
I would just use the time to watch more youtube...
Z same
I love sleeping, it's like going in through time and dimensions 😁💪
Watching this sleep deprived. Gotta say you didn't give me much hope. I'm gonna go sleep now... :)
So I stop watching now. K
I wish I could read books in my sleep like in Doctor Strange
OrangeFreeman lol me to
OrangeFreeman that would be AWESOME!, knowledge is power
Find it very strange that he's only talking about the mental aspects of sleep...It refreshes us physically as well.
I like my beauty sleep, I sleep 10 hours every night, can't do with less. If I was the only one that didn't have to sleep, the nights would be long and boring, but if the whole world didn't have to sleep...I don't know, maybe do the same as I do during the day.
Norma I try to get more but I fail
I've been sleeping 12 hours now it's winter.
Perfect explanation and total understanding)) I sleep 7 to 8 hours a day, everything is okay. But it would be better if we could sleep WHEN we want to and not BECAUSE we need to. I‘m pretty sure that it‘s possible, we just have to do more researches
If you didn't have to sleep you could make more money by having another job. In fact everyone could make more money. The price of houses and general cost of living would go up so you would have to spend that extra time you used to spend in sweet sweet slumber, just working away in order to keep up with society.
why do we need houses if we never sleep?
sa99miy does your house contain only a bed?
sa99miy everyone needs a shelter to feel comfortable and safe or just enjoy the shelter itself.
I disagree, if I didn't need to sleep I would never buy a house.
I sleep two hours per nights not cuz of my phone devices, I usually draw and the weird thing is I don’t feel Tired at all in fact when I sleep but eight hours are usually feel drowsy and I can get distracted more
"...died after just 2 weeks"
lmao i cant even stay awake a whole day.
Right 🤣 2 weeks a long ass time tonbe awake..talkin bout just 2 weeks lol
3:40 uhh... was there a murder at that party?
LOL I didn't notice this till I read your comment :)
builderecks now I can't unsee it & I need answer to that
We are not 'unconscious ' when asleep. Our ears are still alert for danger and this is primeval. We can go from sleep to awake /alert in seconds - a basic survival instinct. ' I awoke with a start' I am quite deaf during the day but at night I hear the slightest noise.
Polyphasic does not work well. I took four hour naps twice a day for a couple months. I did leave my second job because they changed my shift, so I don't know how much longer that could have lasted. Sometimes I would only get two hours plus four, sometimes I would get three plus seven. The most memorable experience during that time for me was waking up without an alarm somewhere around 830am after only two hours of sleep thinking I was late for my 6pm shift. It was during the summer where the sunlight was just right that the sunrise looked like a sunset.
thetommantom different sleep patterns work for different people. Gotta research and test it on your own
8:03 WOAH! So we could be going throughout the day and all of a sudden our frontal lobe shuts down and goes to sleep, so we loose our sight! XD D:
I enjoy my sleep too much. Whether it's a nap for just a few hours, or a full night's sleep, I really love it. I'm a sleeper. I get 9 1/2 hours every night.
Great video. I have read a number of accounts from war veterans who escaped at Dunkirk. The previous weeks they hardly slept are all. Never felt safe - at any time they could be bombed, mortared, machine gunnned or step on a mine. Hard for us to begin to imagine how they felt. One thing they all did once rescued was fall into a deep sleep when at last they felt safe. We are so lucky never to feel fear 24 hrs. Sleep comes at the cost of safety. Very important indeed, but I don't need 8 hrs a night!
It sure wouldn't be work. I've had 30+ years of work that required I work an 8 hour day programming computers and then be available the rest of the time to fix them when they acted up. I'm retired now thank God and I'm finally becoming myself again.
Poor you
We where never ment to work, no animal is ment to be working outside of working for there own survival, its a depressing exsistance but one that hopefully given time will result in a non-currency driven economy, when we no longer have to pay for Labour
I don't sleep or more accurately I sleep very little, I have 40 hour days with 4 to 8 hours down. I could spend that time doing something useful like learning a new skill, but I often find it difficult to find motivation to actually do something.
WOW all that extra time to think about how much I hate my life and wish I was dead....no thanks I'll stick to sleeping 11 hours a day.
slayerseven7 hahahah i feel ya xD
Dont worry.Everyone goes through that phase sometime in their life
I know how you feel. I sleep as much as possible to get to the other end as quickly as possible
@@stardust4001 no that's called depression and not everyone suffers from it it's "only" about 15-20% of the population and genes have a play in it.
Work, definitely. Get commisions done during the time I would normally spend asleep.
I really like the videos you guys make!! Just one question though, what's the numbers counting up every 30secs or so in the top right corner mean?!
It's a marker for the sources of the points raised. Sources are in the description.
I sometimes don't sleep until I feel headache, very bad :/
I don't really think sleeping with half a brain would be very productive. I've experienced sleep deprivation many times at a time I needed to be alert and if it is true that parts of my brain were shutting down at those times, it may be the reason for the occasional hallucinations and synesthesia episode.
So instead of going completely unconscious for 8 hours, would one instead spend 16 in a weird half-dream state? Doesn't sound very efficient.
Filip .Kratky I used to drive late at night. Sometimes I would have to pull over to sleep. If I didn't I would fall asleep with my eyes open! The body gets to a point where it will shut down and it cannot be stopped. That is very dangerous but proves we need to sleep eventually.
Sleep at night and day also has different effects. Sleep at night (early to bed) is supper compatible. You age better. It's almost as if we have no business being awake at night. No sleep, your face becomes hard and old faster than usual. Sleep people.
I've always wondered what our ancient ancestors (and I mean our earliest ancestors, the first homosapiens) sleep schedule used to be like...they were hunters, but also could very quickly become food for something else.
what about bacteria? tiny insects and worms, do they sleep?!
Quick Look n Teardown no
How can bacteria sleep if they don't have a brain? They are single cell organisms 🤣
MonssterHD their brain is nucleus
I have slept for 4-6 hrs per day for about 2 months, and I have not noticed ANY signs of sleep deprivation. I am an athlete and my sports performance continues to grow and improve, while my muscles also improve and get stronger. Would it be safe to say that I am a short sleeper (SSS)?
You'd be able to do more, but at the same time, everyone else will. So more competition. On the other hand, good for humanity as a whole.
I have an important question since I am an eletronics addicted: how do eletronics influence our need of sleep?
I ask that because I noticed that whenever I use my pc or smartphone right before sleeping 1) it takes much longer to sleep because my brain is overexcited 2) I see artifacs of light when I close my eyes 3) I need more than 8 hours to fully clean up my brain from toxins (sometimes 10 sometimes even more) and that is very unpleasant because it takes a lot of time off of my day and if I dont sleep for that amount of hours I feel my eyes hurting, im very sensible to light and my head is heavy.
Also I sleep and stay for the most part of time in a room full of radiations because of the internet router, pc and phone.
I really want to know what you think, no stupid moralist and obvious comments please.
One thing I know is that PC, tablets, smartphones ansd TVs emit blue light (even if it doesn't seem like that). It's the same blue light that the sun emits telling our brain that it is daytime and it's no time for sleeping. If you use one of these electronic things before you go to sleep, they tell your brain that it's day time and you should stay awake. If you want to not have trouble falling asleep and sleeping, you should stop using electronic devices at least 2 or 1 hour before sleeping. Read a book, a newspaper, talk to a family member, listen to some music and you'll fall asleep in no time when you go to bed.
Norma Thank you so much for the answer. I completely ignored the existence of blue light and its effects, now that surely explains why i need a lot more time to fall asleep, and I just discovered myself why i need more hours than normal to completely feel awake and reactive. Radiations alter the blood-brain barrier causing my brain to absorb more toxins than what it should.
The problem is, in the night time I feel a lot more reactive than the day time, and before sleeping I like to entertain myself by looking for informations of any kind on the internet, books only provide a linear knowledge and I may filter the 60% of it because I wouldn't care of the rest or I dont have enough interesting books.
Changing my bad habits is gonna be very tough but now that I know the problem I can think about the solution.
"More productive at work"... That's a joke right???
If didn't have to go to sleep... I would go to sleep, Going to sleep is one of the first things I do after waking up.
I find sleep to be such a waste, having been a lifelong incurable insomniac. I also have non 24.. with about a 34 hour day. When however my day is forced to 24 to fit the norm I only sleep 4 hours in that time. Sadly this has almost certainly shortened my life, and damaged my health significantly.
Sleeping is not only necessary for consolidation of memory, but also for the rest of the eyes, a high energy-requiring organ.
I'd enjoy the sleep that I don't need by sleeping when I want to, BYW I am an insomniac and struggle to sleep most of the time.
Being a cartoon artist n' animator student, I'd be drawing n' animating films around the clock if sleep wouldn't be in the way.
«no one is completely sure why we do it at all»
thats because you didnt ask me!
Very simple Darwin-esque answer: Those who didnt sleep died in the long run because, when food gets scarce, those who were always active died first. Those who rest can save a lot of energy.
In other words, we sleep to save energy.
But why don't we just rest then?
Idk... if the internet has convinced me of anything, it's that people definitely DON'T need more time on their hands.
Thanks for the answer
If I didn't need sleep, I would lie in bed at night waiting for day to return again. I wouldn't get anything out of it, I don't like being up and about and "accomplishing" things when it's bedtime. Whether asleep or not, bedtime is a time for rest.
Having children will help you to understand why sleep deprivation is used as a form of torture.
Yes
Very interesting channel
I'm watching this because I couldn't sleep
yes i am waiting
I don't know that I would want to replace sleep. I kinda enjoy being unconscious and away from the world and all of its problems for that little bit of time every night.
i'd lie in bed watching netflix with my eyes closed.
If I didn't sleep, I do what I love doing, studying.
I’m a 14 year old boy and I get 4-5 hours of sleep and I need help in order to feel rested and I have no choice because i need the time
What are the things in the top left?
we dont need sleep, we need rest. if you can control yourself, you would consciously rest but not sleep
Stats are not actually science unless we understood the workings behind it. correlation doesn't imply causation
Who's like me who can't sleep 😂 💀 👀 and thinking to chat with friends but however I don't have any🙄😥
i personally love sleeping, i dont think i would change it
There's your answer, why do we sleep. if we don't sleep we die. If we never got tired and rested we'd burn out very quickly so the body makes you rest sleep
i have a question , when you talk about six full hours of sleep , must they be at night ,?? like all ove them ?
Watching this at 11:51 PM 12/5/2018 :3
It would be great to find a way to sleep 8hrs, but every other day. Having 40 straight hours of productivity at a time would be life-changing.
If I did not need to rest my gourd, I would start a business/shop when I’m not actually working (a job , not a career by any stretch of the imagination)
Who is also watching this in bed and don't wants to go to sleep?
My sleep is kinda weird. I travel for 2,5 hours to work every day, so I often can only get about 5 hours every night on the week days. But on weekends I sleep for up to 10 hours instead.
That's called sleep debt. It's not weird at all but it's unhealthy.
Pro tip: sleep behind the wheel. 🤣
I wish so...I always seem that I am rushing at life.
Yeah. We do.
What is sleep? Is it that few seconds before you notice your head is about to hit the table?
Learn
So would we still need bedrooms 🤔
If sleeping is like ‘cleaning junk’ by brain, how about generating less junk, in the first place! I mean prioritising day ahead and being at ease & enjoying the work
It's simple, we sleep to clear our cache.
If I didn't have to sleep anymore...I'd still sleep.
If I did not have to sleep the first thing I would do is take a nap. I enjoy sleeping
If I didn't HAVE to sleep? I'd like to schedule productive naps anyway; there's an advantage to lucid dreaming, you don't have to invest in a Virtual Reality rig to get some really off the wall production values, and building a passive brain reading pillowcase might take some research. I'd rather share a dream with a physicist who could take me on a mental exercise of a visit through a black hole, than sit through a boring lecture where their imagination is great for themselves, but lost if they themselves are not a great orator. Facts are great but stories have impact, a beginning, a middle, and an end, a complete idea.
its possible that the brain is defraging like a hard drive and the cleanup process mentoined in this video
I wish i didn't need sleep always go to bed 6am or 5 and wake up to go to school
Some people sleep in the day and work at night?
Have you not heard of Batman, Gregg?
MY MAN! GREG FOOT! :D
Dude's really great, to me. Like a handsome Mr. Bean... if Handsome Mr. Bean was smart and taught me about Science :
It definitely would be weird to see people walk around the city 24/7 and shops would be allways open, but really, it would be actually awesome to stay sharp in mind without sleep, i only see benefits if we could manage without sleep... more time to train, ofc more food consumption would happen to, but also more work could be done meaning more money 😁
Sort answer, no. Now the boss says get back to work!
What can you do if you can't go on holiday
i just do an experiment that for 2 days i dont sleep.after the first day my eyes are very strained but i do it ( sorry my English is poor)
Great video, I'd love to not have to sleep. Can we take a second to admire how awful that elephant animation was? And the glory of the phrase 'it's not as easy as squirting some artificial sleep up your snoz'. Haha.
i have a great relationship with my bed 🛏 ❤️
invdrlzz I will give it a try!
Sleeping is not boring unless it is done excessively.
ICOD73 when I’m sick I sleep 16 hours and I feel genuinely tired of sleep
Why ever bother not sleeping?? Sleeping feels so Good
Summary: we tried, doesn't seem like it.
Saved you 8 minutes and 50 seconds, use it to sleep.
Morpheus - Sleep No More.
If we weren't biologically dependent upon sleep, then our society would force more work upon us and we would get no rest literally. Good thing for the need for sleep!
What else is there to do?
Polyphasic
What the hell will we do on winter sunday morning ???!
Poor rats :/
There's no reason to think they're any less sentient either. I mean can we see better than them? Can we hear better than them? Taste better than them? Smell better than them? Well we certainly seem to think we can feel better than them for whatever reason.
If the abilaty to think in any way equated to the abilaty to feel, we'd expect children to feel less pain than adults, given that they are far less intellectually and emotionally complex creatures than adults. However although they are less emotionally complex, this speaks nothing of the intensity with which they experience emotion.
If we think of how pain developed and it's evolutionary purpose, it doesn't seem like something requiring extraordinary complexity and abstract processing power, it seems to be a far more primal sense. And regarding it's purpose, to provide negative feedback to make us avoid noxious stimuli; it's quite possible that the less intelligent the creature, the slower they are at learning and remembering, the more powerful a pain response is deemed evolutionarily necessary so that they can't forget what noxious stimulus to avoid. This would explain why children feel suffering more strongly than adults.
IndigoXYZ18 yup! We need to give rats universal suffrage too.
Jennings Zhang No more than we need to give equally sentient newborns the right to vote.
If we didnt have to sleep anymore, Id use the all that extra time to get some more sleep! ;D
