    i've tried polyphasic sleep before. slept for two hours 3 to 4 times a day. while its effectively the same amount of sleep, it felt very different because a "day" didn't hold the same meaning, and time felt more like an even ever-flowing thing rather than something divided into hard-edged segments. it was better, but it doesn't work in a world where you're the only one to do it, so i quit.

      I think those that can even try polyphasic sleep have to have a job that allowes them to sleep every 2 hours for 30 minutes a day. A luxury to most workers.

    If you didn't have to sleep you could make more money by having another job. In fact everyone could make more money. We are not 'unconscious ' when asleep. Our ears are still alert for danger and this is primeval. We can go from sleep to awake /alert in seconds - a basic survival instinct. ' I awoke with a start' I am quite deaf during the day but at night I hear the slightest noise.

    Polyphasic does not work well. I took four hour naps twice a day for a couple months. I did leave my second job because they changed my shift, so I don't know how much longer that could have lasted. Sometimes I would only get two hours plus four, sometimes I would get three plus seven. The most memorable experience during that time for me was waking up without an alarm somewhere around 830am after only two hours of sleep thinking I was late for my 6pm shift. It was during the summer where the sunlight was just right that the sunrise looked like a sunset.

    Great video. I have read a number of accounts from war veterans who escaped at Dunkirk. The previous weeks they hardly slept are all. Never felt safe - at any time they could be bombed, mortared, machine gunnned or step on a mine. Hard for us to begin to imagine how they felt. One thing they all did once rescued was fall into a deep sleep when at last they felt safe. We are so lucky never to feel fear 24 hrs. Sleep comes at the cost of safety. Very important indeed, but I don't need 8 hrs a night!

    I don't really think sleeping with half a brain would be very productive. I've experienced sleep deprivation many times at a time I needed to be alert and if it is true that parts of my brain were shutting down at those times, it may be the reason for the occasional hallucinations and synesthesia episode.
    So instead of going completely unconscious for 8 hours, would one instead spend 16 in a weird half-dream state? Doesn't sound very efficient.

      Filip .Kratky I used to drive late at night. Sometimes I would have to pull over to sleep. If I didn't I would fall asleep with my eyes open! The body gets to a point where it will shut down and it cannot be stopped. That is very dangerous but proves we need to sleep eventually.

    I have an important question since I am an eletronics addicted: how do eletronics influence our need of sleep?
    I ask that because I noticed that whenever I use my pc or smartphone right before sleeping 1) it takes much longer to sleep because my brain is overexcited 2) I see artifacs of light when I close my eyes 3) I need more than 8 hours to fully clean up my brain from toxins (sometimes 10 sometimes even more) and that is very unpleasant because it takes a lot of time off of my day and if I dont sleep for that amount of hours I feel my eyes hurting, im very sensible to light and my head is heavy.
    Also I sleep and stay for the most part of time in a room full of radiations because of the internet router, pc and phone.
    I really want to know what you think, no stupid moralist and obvious comments please.

    • @norma8686
      @norma8686 Před 6 lety

      One thing I know is that PC, tablets, smartphones ansd TVs emit blue light (even if it doesn't seem like that). It's the same blue light that the sun emits telling our brain that it is daytime and it's no time for sleeping. If you use one of these electronic things before you go to sleep, they tell your brain that it's day time and you should stay awake. If you want to not have trouble falling asleep and sleeping, you should stop using electronic devices at least 2 or 1 hour before sleeping. Read a book, a newspaper, talk to a family member, listen to some music and you'll fall asleep in no time when you go to bed.

    • @valenesco45
      @valenesco45 Před 6 lety +1

      Norma Thank you so much for the answer. I completely ignored the existence of blue light and its effects, now that surely explains why i need a lot more time to fall asleep, and I just discovered myself why i need more hours than normal to completely feel awake and reactive. Radiations alter the blood-brain barrier causing my brain to absorb more toxins than what it should.
      The problem is, in the night time I feel a lot more reactive than the day time, and before sleeping I like to entertain myself by looking for informations of any kind on the internet, books only provide a linear knowledge and I may filter the 60% of it because I wouldn't care of the rest or I dont have enough interesting books.
      Changing my bad habits is gonna be very tough but now that I know the problem I can think about the solution.

I'd rather share a dream with a physicist who could take me on a mental exercise of a visit through a black hole, than sit through a boring lecture where their imagination is great for themselves, but lost if they themselves are not a great orator. Facts are great but stories have impact, a beginning, a middle, and an end, a complete idea.

    It definitely would be weird to see people walk around the city 24/7 and shops would be allways open, but really, it would be actually awesome to stay sharp in mind without sleep, i only see benefits if we could manage without sleep... more time to train, ofc more food consumption would happen to, but also more work could be done meaning more money 😁

    Great video, I'd love to not have to sleep. Can we take a second to admire how awful that elephant animation was? And the glory of the phrase 'it's not as easy as squirting some artificial sleep up your snoz'. Haha.

    If we weren't biologically dependent upon sleep, then our society would force more work upon us and we would get no rest literally. Good thing for the need for sleep!

      There's no reason to think they're any less sentient either. I mean can we see better than them? Can we hear better than them? Taste better than them? Smell better than them? Well we certainly seem to think we can feel better than them for whatever reason.
      If the abilaty to think in any way equated to the abilaty to feel, we'd expect children to feel less pain than adults, given that they are far less intellectually and emotionally complex creatures than adults. However although they are less emotionally complex, this speaks nothing of the intensity with which they experience emotion.
      If we think of how pain developed and it's evolutionary purpose, it doesn't seem like something requiring extraordinary complexity and abstract processing power, it seems to be a far more primal sense. And regarding it's purpose, to provide negative feedback to make us avoid noxious stimuli; it's quite possible that the less intelligent the creature, the slower they are at learning and remembering, the more powerful a pain response is deemed evolutionarily necessary so that they can't forget what noxious stimulus to avoid. This would explain why children feel suffering more strongly than adults.
