what a beautiful looking plane!
I have 1050 hrs in this aircraft. It was exceptionally advanced for its time and incorporated multiple leading-edge technologies that did not exist in other aircraft. Feel fortunate to have done what I was privileged to do.
I was NATOPS qualified RAN in 1971. I had about 400 hours in the RA-5C. I was about 3 weeks away from carrier qualifications when the Wing found that the loss of Viggies in Viet Nam and elsewhere left them with too few aircraft and too mant aircrews so about 20 of us were told to call out detailer and find a place to go. A bunch of us went to VAQ-33 at NAS Norfolk. It had 4 A-3's, 4 TA-4's, 1 F-4, and 1 EC-121. I had about 300 hours in A-3's and 300 hours in TA-4's. The problem with A-3 is NO EJECTION SEAT. On October 11, 1972 my former room mate and two other officers wee taking an A-3 (former hanger queen) from Norfolk to Pensacola. Immediately upon take off they had an emergency and were trying to get it on the ground. The pilot blew the hatch and my former room mate jumped out. He had a good parachute but his helmet was too loose so the wind stream broke his neck and he was dead before he hit the ground. The pilot and nav couldn't get out and dug a hole in the ground. The A3-D (all three dead).

A few comments; the Vigilante was not retired in the early 70’s, their last deployment was on the Ranger in 1979. Three planes made up a deployed squadron. The fastest approach speed of any carrier based aircraft about 156 knots. The fastest carrier based aircraft, some may think F-4, open for discussion. A difficult aircraft to fly, I watched one go over the side on takeoff during my 1974 cruise. All in all, a very neat plane.
Hi - thank you for the comment - with the end of the Vietnam War, disestablishment of RVAH squadrons began in 1974 - which in our book is "early". You are correct - the last Vigilante squadron, RVAH-7, completed its final deployment to the Western Pacific aboard USS Ranger in late 1979. We agree they were pretty cool.
As an A-6 aviator we tanked many of these ‘birds’, as I think you mentioned they definitely needed ‘gas’🙈 On our Alpha Strikes, those boys really had to power back so we could keep up.

This is an aircraft I don't think I've ever seen in person. Either in flight or as a static display.
It simply wasn’t as versatile as the A-3, tanking is just one example of the many roles the A-3 was well suited for. A-3 variants include: A-3D, KA-3B, EKA-3B, EA-3B, RA-3B, ERA-3B, NA-3B, NRA-3B, TA-3B and VA-3B. It was simply the most versatile plane the Navy has ever had and not only was it versatile it was an excellent aircraft for each and every role it served.
