  • Hi there, it's Eileen. It looks like everyone is quitting CZcams. In the luxury shopping community, it seems like the landscape is changing too. Is luxury shopping really over? Or maybe we were sold an unsustainable shopping model in the first place? Is it time to bid farewell to those Louis Vuitton hauls and Hermes shopping hauls? Let's talk xx

I agree. I'm 45 and my husband is 43. We are retired after really trying to keep it minimal for years. Our first home was paid off last year and we are in the midst of a cross country move to a home we are building ourselves on our own 5-acre piece of land.
I have literally one "high-end" piece, a vintage coach bag, and a few very different pieces from Portland Leather. Yes, Portland Leather is high end to me. I'm very happy to have kept my eye on the prize without losing myself in my things.

As a doctor, because of the pandemic exhaustion, I transitioned from having all the luxury branded bags to enjoying quality time with family, travel, good food, and leaving my work phone while on trip. That’s my form of luxury now.

I look forward to each and every video that you make, and you always give such a thought provoking, insightful perspective! On a personal note, I dreamed of owning a LV bag for so long, and about 6 months ago, I finally bought the LV Speedy 20 bandoliere empreint in black. I was beyond thrilled, but now it sits in the dust bag, and I'm afraid to wear it when it rains, which it frequently does here on the West coast of Canada! Now that I can now afford a lux bag there's not one to be had. The workmanship and materials are subpar. It's such a shame. Someone suggested pre-loved but no thank you. I want my own. I think it's just a cyclical thing, with certain contributing factors such as economic times and some 1st generation content creators wearying of the lifestyle or shifting their priorities. If I recall correctly, during the last major recession there was also a surge in quiet luxury, with non logo bags being preferred. "Stealth wealth" was the term then.

Being honest I’m a bit of a rough user, if I had a Chanel it would be just there decorating my closet so instead I prefer to buy a bag from KateSpade which looks like the Chanel but feel more free to use it. With the luxury frenzy many women who usually wouldn’t have thought of buying luxury got luxury bags just because it was a trendy thing to do.
Now luxury it’s going back to only the women who was into before this frenzy happened. Just like designer jeans bubble exploded. This trend too too but to a lesser extent.

And in the case that was true. I have a big question why better they don’t start as affordable fashion and then slowly grow into luxury. Now one of my favorite luxury CZcamsrs has done the opposite, she started as a luxury CZcamsr and now she is going into more affordable fashion including accessories.
Remember when this style CZcamsrs started how it was all about fast fashion clothes but high end accessories, well shea is not like that. She actually often suggests Amazon accessories. Cool isn’t it.
She still loves her luxury and recommends luxury a lot but now she also suggests more affordable stuff in general. She is like my old magazines where they did suggest high end products but also cheap ones. I remember how fun it was the get the look for less sections including the accessories though sometimes if the bag of the OG look was Coach or Michael Kors they said it go with the expensive one which is not that expensive.
Shea is that way and love her so much for that. At first I thought she was faking it that she liked the less expensive bags or accessories but now I do believe her and not being all luxury makes her a better CZcamsr suggesting a bit of luxury items and a bit of more high street stuff

I don’t think luxury shopping is over. It will never be.
The pandemic and the recession have been eyes-opener for so many.
Some were forced to sell belongings to make ends meet, others had to shift priorities and strictly focus on necessities and some realized how life is fragile and maybe spending your limited time chasing bags isn’t the best way to enjoy life…
Also, with the ridiculous price increases that these brands keep having every other week, it’s getting harder to keep up.
Also, the pollution of these so called luxury bags all over social media platforms have somehow provoked an “overdose”.
Therefore, many have turned to more affordable brands, less “in your face” that still combine style, craftsmanship and reasonable price such as Polène…
I’d much rather spend 300€ on a Polène bag than 3k on a LV.!!!
I still watch luxury unboxing, and when I fall in love with an item, I put it in my wishlist and wait for it to be on sale. If it does 👌 if not…it’s life, I don’t care 😜

My priorities have definitely changed. I’m wearing less make up, I’m also purging my material items. I donate or give to friends and I like shopping at vintage shops and boutiques. I’m single and I had 10 sets of linen sheets, I really only need 2 sets plus one just in case. I appreciate a good cotton blend or linen’s I enjoy high quality friends and maintain people who expect the best from me AND friends who push me to grow and trust me enough to call me out and I reciprocate those values.
I want to enjoy and feel confident in my life. I have already proven to myself that I can kick ass and rise to the top. Retirement is welcoming and my lifestyle is changing for the better.
I mean I don’t have a photo shoot to get ready for right? So no need to pressure myself about my makeup any more or worry about how my clothes look.
I used to prepare myself for doing a painting by brushing sumi circles in black inc to help me focus.
My transition style recently is wearing solid colors to help ground me and use a colorful bag for a nice pop if it’s colorful or or jewelry pieces. Shows can be a pop too.
    My idea with all the glorious beautifully appointed luxury and some thrift store we all do that I hope. Is;
    1.- ground your self
2- something utilitarian and then the POP! Use one piece that’s colorful, exciting, send messages.

There are crazy things happening in foreign affairs, and we all know it. While the future is uncertain, people don’t change. Priorities will shift, but the community will survive. Maybe, just in a different way. Great video! I am a huge fan of yours. I love this trend because I’m a genXer and we are all a bit anti trend at heart. I personally think that if you have to worry about your luxury items getting ruined and constantly worried to take care of them, you(not particulary you) are not able to afford. There r many people who can enjoy luxury goods with no extra stress and that doesn’t mean that they r missing out of small things in life as well. I am pretty sure u already know this too. It just feel a bit uncomfortable to hear like it sounds like leaving luxury needs to be justified?

Personally, I think.. daily necessities, taxes, transportation, daily foods and monthly bills became more and more expensive, so I've reduce my budget for shopping.
Lately travel expenses became more expensive also. But personally, travelling is became my go to right now because what happened back then in pandemi era so... I want to travel more right now, because the unsettling trauma and depressing things that I've been through because of that time, And as you said, when travelling we will packed the lightly possible so when can moved easily and without too much luggages.
I've lived alone but because all of the expenses became more high than before, so I can't even think about buying luxury goods now.
So, what I've been buying these past 2-4 months was a local designer leather goods or the mid/ affordable luxury brands [their goods actually pretty great tho].
Will all of that happened, the price of top tier luxury goods became more out of hands and decreasing quality, for me that was just disgusting.
Personally, I think we can find happiness without all of that and travelling became one of my way finding my own happiness now, not stuck in luxury goods anymore.

I've been going in the minimalist direction over the past few years, I've lost track of how many trips I've made to Goodwill, just getting rid of stuff that we don't use anymore that now just takes up space. Along with general household items, I've also really paired down my closet, clothes, shoes, jewelry & yes, even purses! 'High-end luxury' for me... My Coach bags, those are real but I found a few nice LV & Chanel dupes that I really like along with a few Nine West, even Amazon & no-name bags that I've kept because I do reach for them but the rest all went bye-bye. There's actually a euphoria that I get when I drive home after getting rid of things that have become 'clutter'.

I think the problem is that most people are tired of luxury unboxing hauls. We’re tired of seeing influencers over-consume and put down others if they can’t afford luxury bags. Also calling subscribers tacky for liking bags like the Neverfull and Marmont will drive people away. Not sure why luxe influencers thinks they can be rude and mean and not think they’ll be any consequences.
I really like Noorie and Je Sui Lou. Tbh those are the only luxury influencers I will ever stand. Noorie has impeccable style and can teach you how to dress and style your bags. Lou educates people on the history of luxury brands. When I first discovered her page, I learned so much about Chanel’s history. If more luxe influencers would be like and not vapid overconsumption rude people then the luxe community would be so much better than it is now.

I am so surprised to hear that those luxury channel youtubers are quitting / changing the direction of their channels. That is good for them. It’s such a blessing to learn that more people are more rational in regards to their shopping habits. Moreover, this change will introduce more balance to the community.
Changes would definitely brings uncertainty and inevitably worries and fears. But your changes years ago is really a very good decision for your life and the channel. Otherwise I would not be a fan. Lol

It's a human thing to have trends, then for those trends to fade, and for those exact same ones to resurface again. That's happened in every single thing in human history, from luxury to diseases to art movements to wars to civilizations -- that's just how we are as humans, with our transient minds and hive tendencies. So yes, right now the 'loudness' of luxury is experiencing a downturn, and minimalism or 'quiet' luxury is gaining momentum, but I will bet you that it, too, will go through a slowing down phase and most likely luxury will become loud, yet again. It is what it is!

You're the only luxury channel I still follow, because it all has been so unsustainable. The reality is the majority of us, including me, really have no business buying or even wasting our times aspiring to these brands. I love nice and beautiful things as much as the next person, but living within my lifestyle and budget is more important. If you have the money and want to buy luxury, that's fine, but let's not normalize it. It's not normal. Most people are just trying to make ends meet and if they are solidly middle class there are better things to be saving toward, especially when talking about multiple bags. Like, if I were lucky enough to win a luxury bag, that would be nice, but actually buying one at this point isn't realistic. Luxury channels aren't inherently bad, but I feel like they're not being held in the correct context.

I honestly feel with the cost of living altogether going up and has been on the rise, so are the luxury goods…but the luxury goods is going up way faster than cost of living, and to me the luxury brands are just pricing their customers out at this point. At what point is enough enough you know? I’m a handbag collector since I was in middle school, and I LOVE all brands, though the majority of my collection is luxury, I still keep what was near and dear to me like Michael Kors his older collections, Coach, Kate Spade…i have plenty of handbags and I’m not looking to add anymore. These LV & Chanel, even YSL now their prices are just laughable…b/c the quality isn’t what it used to be but their price seems to think so…

Purseonfleek now does more investigative vids on luxury houses instead of pure unboxings and reviewing ‘new in’ items and drooling over Hermes. Caitlin Pawlowski also said goodbye to making luxury vids. Leo Lion LV also left CZcams. I think that luxury fashion is now akin to fast fashion in that pieces and trends change sooooo quickly but it’s soo expensive, people just can’t keep up and, apart from the 1%-ers of this world (who the luxury houses prefer as clients anyway) us mere mortals have had to throw in the towel. Hi, I have a loose relationship with the luxury, designer, influencer community. I enjoy your videos because of your information and enjoy listening to you. Since the 2010s, you all have been introducing me to luxury products. Sure, I’ve seen logos on handbags in the wild, and remember that Ralph Lauren polo shirts were popular that one year in college, but that was about it. I liked handbags and shoes in general, though. I just didn’t know about designers. So, I learned a lot. I learned enough to realize that true luxury shoppers buy annually. It seems like if they spend $10k on their day handbag, then that’s what they’ll spend on next year’s, too. Plus there’s a clutch, and a backpack, evening bag of course, and some Loews or Celine tote bags, right? ok i guess I was living the Sunset Blvd Melrose life since i’m from LA.
I know you always espoused a more classic approach. But back to reality, I managed to watch all of it and never buy a new bag.I never saw myself climbing the ladder after the first LV starter tote or that one $3000 G bag I could imagine wearing. Never mind that I could barely get myself dressed and out of the house.
For the world though, during downturns, collectibles don’t lose value. a couple places to park cash is in fine art and in collectibles. I’m a rare bird who lives on little, has some savings i don’t want eaten away by inflation, so I considered buying my first classic Chanel. There was a treasury bond we could buy from the USA govnt for guaranteed interest but max 10k USD. for one year. I’m just looking for similar investments. Im reserved in that price range, but I’m sure you could cover other price ranges, too.
Other people who don’t know about handbags might want collectible items H,C, G, LV, lots of familiar names.
I know it’s exhausting to change formats, but I just want to say at least please don’t disappear. Perhaps be available to consult. Or, use the term collectibles if you think it’s appropriate, even if just as a keyword hashtag
If you’re curious what a OAP in the USA bought after seeing all the temptations…
I used to watch Sophie .. (can’t recall her channel name) she suggested websites where people sell used items
I bought a Hermes bangle bracelet, yellow enamel
a new LV scarf online. on LV site, very hard to navigate to that section
Valentino gold studded beige flip flops unworn i bought on posh mark
and a card carrier ive used ever since instead of a wallet. mid designer like coach beautiful coral color
    total less than $1000.

Evolution. You have evolved and so has your channel. I am just starting a new business and can't wait to start. Exciting and scary to make changes. But always good. Good luck x

I don’t know if it’s just me but the sound is dead on one headphone and is just coming out of the left one

I feel this my priorities have changed last year I brought some very expensive designer items but this year I’ve just moved into a new house and my priorities have shifted to home decor, furniture and landscaping. Our lives change and we constantly evolve. I still love luxury I’m just not spending my money on it now and I’m reassessing how much things cost and what is crazy and what is affordable

I live near high end mall where the first floor is a designer handbags - Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, Chanel etc - about 2 years ago Hermes opened and they are not getting the clientele they expected. There is always a line at the remodeled larger LV and on the weekend at Chanel and Gucci. The SA’s at Hermes say many do not want to pay that high price that is really not an everyday bag or a bag for dress up. I and many others I know just don’t like their bags. Therefore many you tubers i watched for LV or Chanel bags have now switched to Hermes videos and I have unsubscribed.

May people don't want to beg a brand to take their money and be treated like they are lucky to receive an item they don't really want to build a relationship. Hermes is becoming a victim of its own marketing strategy.

I’ve been seeing a lot of people here on CZcams and TikTok saying that luxury bags are been made poorly ,the quality of the bags is horrible and the prices are through the roof just not worth it.

Funny but I can relate on a microcosm. I have a few luxury pieces, but I feel really strange wearing them now with the price of gasoline, groceries, health insurance, home insurance, car insurance, my tax bill. And with everyone in the middle class struggling with this new horrible economy, I just feel weird even wearing a basic Gucci belt. I thought it was just me until I saw your video. By the way, you seem like a truly lovely person

I would like to believe people are becoming smarter. Every time you say yes to something you’re also saying no to something else. Saying yes to a Chanel handbag is saying no to investing that amount into an index fund for example. There is nothing wrong with buying something you love and will enjoy for many years to come, but having 30 luxury handbags and no investments is crazy.

Thank you for sharing, Donna! Yes you're right, the topic of opportunity cost definitely deserves more mention than it does xx

I manage to stay away from LV; strolling in Hong Kong in Tsim Sa Tsui on night on vacation, saw the LV store, they were stocking up and all the bags seemed casually on the floor while doing their jobs. I've always taken care of my handbags, they don't get on the floor. So I decided I'll never buy an LV.
I'm not any influencer or any, that is not in my generation. I rather take my money and tithe with my church.

Luxury brands control the market by destroying stock: burning, slashing, dumping stock that is out of fashion... I know someone who has seen the value of the stock that gets destroyed. It's just pathetic.
