#1 pick one thing to focus on
    - write down a list of things you want to work on
    - where do you see yourself in 5 years
    - write day to day habits that will help you get there
    - are you comfortable commiting to these habits every single day?
#2 forcing yourself is a good thing
    - don't let the resistance get the best of you
    - pretty much 100% of the time, pushing yourself is the right decision
#3 make the process work for you
    - you're on your own side
    - make the things you want to do easier/more enjoyable
    - modify the approach to help you
You could be in a way better place in a year / a couple months if you apply those strategies everyday
(Edit: I love how everyone in this comment section assumed I was a guy lmao)

Actually what i've come to realize is after watching thousands of self improvement videos over the years, and flooding my mind with concepts and formulas of productivity, succes, motivation, etcetera. What really helps you is shuting all of it down, social media, even youtube. And starting to DO, anything, just DO, and figure things out, just think for yourself, you are not going to find a magic bullet that's pain-free, the pain goes away once you start moving and getting good at what you are doing.

ABSOLUTELY correct!!! I found this the solution once I realized what the videos, CZcams, blogs, lifestyles, practice... I have come to this exact conclusion. Its proof that we are all individual people who adapt and adjust to what is fitting for oneself. I admit they helped at first but, I lost myself in it and became too hard on myself. I click the videos, thinking there would be a difference, but it all comes down to the same guides. The same ideas of self love, discipline and manifestation. I still like the way you worded it. Perfect!

This is so true. I started running just 5 minutes a day. The first couple of days was really hard to get motivated but I noticed I always felt great after the run. After a few more days I would be able to run without having a hard time catching my breathe and my mind would go “you know what I’ll go around the block one more time” the 5 minute run turned into 10 minutes. I felt energized all day and it made me want to run longer or do a couple of sit-ups when I got home, and I noticed I would look forward for my run everyday and this is coming from a very lazy person lol Whenever my schedules tight and I can’t go running I would feel like sht. People around me mention I’m more positive and I feel more relaxed mentally and physically. I would easily spend 10-30 minutes watching Netflix I know this sounds dramatic but the 5 minute run literally changed my life for the better.

Like saying it is bs to listen to that voice in your head and doing it anyway. I’ve been listening to that “I’m too tired, I’m too this and that” voice all my life. You express everything so beautifully and clearly. I am in awe. I will listen to this every morning and develop the processes. I will also set the intention to report back a year from now. Thank you. The real gem of this video was the point about how you'll never actually interact with the goal itself, 100% of the time you are interacting with the daily process/habit. Your relationship has to be with the process. You can't interact with "having 1 million subscribers", you have to interact with the routine of making 1 video a week consistantly, atleast as an example for me trying to build my CZcams channel. Great perspective shift!

“Do it anyways + stop acting on feelings” has been an incredible game changer for me in the last month. I used to spend ALL my time thinking about all the changes I wish I could make “if I weren’t so tired, or if I had enough time” … well, after a while enough is enough. If you want to implement something new in your life, please just DO IT. You can decide after a few weeks if those things are worth keeping up or not. Stop psyching yourself out before you’ve even tried. Believe in yourself and the outcome. Give yourself permission to be happy.

This is so spot on. I came to these conclusions naturally last January when I woke up basically on New Year’s Day (it might have been a day or two later, I don’t remember exactly) and was just exhausted with who I was and wanted to change. I have CPTSD with anger issues, so my goal was to really get my anger under control for real. To do that, I focused on yoga and meditation because I had read that it’s one of the best things for folks overcoming trauma. But I also knew that I was pretty pissed at myself for letting my body go for years and losing strength, so I made the conscious decision to approach yoga from a mental health perspective and not an exercise perspective (it’s absolutely both, but I was still a baby to the whole mind-body connection, so I had to make this distinction in the beginning in order to not get down on myself). So yoga and meditation became my method for achieving mental health (along with trauma informed therapy, of course). Omg this lead me down such a deep and rewarding rabbit hole over the course of a year!! I spent the first couple of months forcing myself to do it until I came to enjoy it and it was no longer a chore. I decided I wanted to learn more about it so I didn’t need to rely on YT, so I took a yoga teacher training course that delved into the philosophy and mind-body connection science, and I got competent enough to be certified and I can create my own sequences and teach. Everything I learned on the mat has real world application off the mat: the biggest being able to sit with discomfort, and finding my edge and going just past it. We learn to identify the difference between useful discomfort where you’re stretching into new areas, and dangerous discomfort where you’re actually hurting yourself, and how to pull away from that back to your edge. If that isn’t a metaphor for anger management, idk what is.
But it went beyond that. Now I was learning to heal the parts of me that felt anger, to identify the hurt child inside that was fighting to protect me and to reparent that child. I went from anger management to healing and post traumatic growth. I’m not fully healed yet, but I do feel like fundamentally different and better person than I was a year ago. And it really is that simple: pick a goal and a method to achieve it, keep going even when you don’t want to, find ways to make it more enjoyable or meaningful, and I’d also say let yourself get sucked into the rabbit hole as you learn more and find new ways to improve. One year really can change your life.

as someone who's been burnt out: when you're on your way to burnout, the voice in your head never tells you you're burnt out. it makes you believe you can and _should_ do everything. in this case, you need to stop yourself, and _not_ do all the things in the world to be productive, but instead focus on rest and recovery (especially if you haven't practiced that before).
however as someone's who's also struggling with depression, _that_ voice telling you that you can't do it is lying. you can do things like eat, exercise and brush your teeth. but when you don't, the voice is gonna tell you that you're lazy, and then it's just a vicious cycle of you telling yourself you can't do anything. you need baby steps and appreciating yourself for completing every baby step.
in both of these cases, you need to be more gentle with yourself, and prioritize self care, instead of tHe hUsTle lol.
for me, burnout was accompanied by depression, but they're extremely different & need to be handled differently (which is hard if they're there at the same time lol). the voice isn't always telling the truth, but it can also lie in both directions. most importantly, seek professional help if you think you might need it (i probably wouldn't have survived without real help tbh)

    • @betterideas
      @betterideas  Před 2 lety +33

Totally! Which is sort of what I was getting at with the third tip. Pushing yourself past resistance is healthy. But it's important to realize you're on your own side. Make the things that you KNOW are good for you, feel good as well. When you can achieve this balance, these keystone habits are things that can PREVENT burnout instead of cause it. Good luck!!

    • @hih1590

@@betterideas damn never thought you’d reply, what an honour lol! that’s really true, and it’s hard when both issues are kind of “against” you, but in completely different ways. i tend to swing between extreme productivity (and then not taking care of myself) and complete lethargy (and then _also_ not taking care of myself - but for a different reason) so finding the balance in which i’m actually healthy is what i have to work on.
merry christmas & thanks for awesome videos!

This was great, thank you. I have been committed to bettering myself since I burnt out from work a month ago and finally took 2 weeks of PTO, my girlfriend broke up with me right when PTO started, but I am still driven, maybe even more so from the breakup. Your idea of recording things before morning coffee is great, and I have created a Google doc to record my progress. I'll leave a link to this video in the doc with a reminder to come back in one year and update this comment with what has happened.
A few things I am not following though are I am not just doing one thing, I know you said that can be detrimental, but I have and am used to a lot of things "cooking" at the same time, I believe without the distraction of my ex and with a little discipline I should be able to get a list and action plan together and record my progress over time. In a way, my "one thing" is keeping this plan of what I need to do... I think the key is not letting yourself say "Ah, I'm too tired to work out" as you mentioned in the video, and being diligent about recording updates in the morning before coffee and setting goals and time into your routine. That's the plan, thank you for the advice!

Its 31st of December today. Soon the clock will strike 12, then past it. But this time, i don't just want the year's number to change; I want to change myself too, for the better, gradually the best. There are three major things I want to work on.

I would want to add a couple of things that I have learned in the past years:
    1. Failure is a good thing. The hardest part is the recovery from that said failure (Doctor K has a video on CZcams regarding this, highly recommend it)
    2. Failure should be associated to your actions, not yourself. There is a big problem in our society where we looked down on people who have failed and instantly associate with the person, not with the actions. The difference might not be apparent, but it's different saying "You are a failure for doing X" as opposed to "You failed doing X". This helped me recover and try doing something else several times.
Also, good video overall! Highly agree with the first point in particular.

Love this! Another thing that helps me with smaller tasks such as chores is that instead of saying “I’ll do it tomorrow”, say “I’ll do this for my tomorrow self” - think how your tomorrow self would feel waking up knowing that the thing you were going to put off has now already been done, leaving you more time to actually do what you wanted to do that day. Also I absolutely love Anker, I only own their portable chargers but they’re by far the best ones I’ve ever owned and I will definitely be buying more of their products!

You're so right about customizing the process so that you will actually do it! For example, I do not enjoy going to the gym because the exercises are not fun to me and I also get so intimidated around other people there. But I love to dance, so I workout in my living room with my TV and watch zumba/dance instructors on CZcams. I am way more likely to follow through with that than I would be going to the gym. Find a habit. Is this habit *realistic* to you, do you feel comfortable?
Wait *one month* before adding the next habit

Finished graduating the first 5 months of 22' then spent the next 6 months on a diet of Taco Bell and weed, just hating myself and wasting my life. In the last month I've started to become really grateful to be alive, I feel like I love myself. Started going hard on my fitness routine/diet, picked art back up again, and started messaging the people I isolated myself from. Have also just started talking to random people whenever I can. I feel a lot of love for humans in general right now. It's a strange high and I pray that I can keep this mindset and energy throughout all of 23'.

I really appreciate you talking about how willpower can be useful in day-to-day life. It's the most obvious thing, but one will be surprised how much a "just do it, 4Head" kind of mindset can push someone past a lot of resistance. Most everybody knows what is good for them, yet it's so difficult to actually just go out and do the thing that is good for them! But it also can't be denied how constantly being in pursuit of one's "perfect self" will cause them to lose sight in what is true and benevolent in the moment. Perhaps the action of doing that good thing is exactly what can make it such a good thing.
Anyways, those are my thoughts, hope someone found these mildly interesting. Thanks, man for sharing this video!

Joe Rogan said something like this, he said you just have to do it. But he also said there's a lot of men who aren't real men and they succumb to fear and anxiety. And I had been going through a phase where I would call out of work if I were too depressed, and this offended me. I started doing the opposite, going to work even if I were too depressed, doing whatever it took to force myself to push though the suffering. At the end of the day or the week, I literally felt amazing. I felt like even though I just did the normal, I pushed through my own mental anguish until it didn't exist anymore AND I didn't have to live with the guilt of calling out of work. I developed very good habits in a matter of a few weeks. It's something you have to experience for yourself and you'll have your own epiphany. Hope this helps.

I think another point that could be added when we talk about excuses and evaluating our process before we do it (going to the gym or for that run) is to say people don't tend to burnout when they do things that align to their values. So if your goal is truly aligned to who you see yourself as, then it's not going to lead to or exacerbate your burnout or exhaustion. In theory it should help those issues because you're getting closer to being your authentic self. Obviously there are times to say no and listen to your physical body (who else has tried to train through injury only to get worse 🧐), but when the voice in your head gives you excuses it's important to take a hard look at those and see them for the BS they are. Doing things worth doing should be at least a bit hard and challenging, that's what makes them so damn rewarding when you achieve your goal. Just my humble opinion. Wishing everyone a safe, healthy, fulfilling 2022 💜

Agreed, you don't have to change 10 areas all at once. And sometimes when you change one area it ends up changing other areas of your life, like exercise usually ends up changing your diet and sleep habits.
    Awesome vids, love your work

I think my one goal will be cooking actual meals. I've already been going to the gym for 8 months, but I don't eat healthy meals. I've been eating to put on mass. I feel like cooking nutrition packed foods, should help physically and mentally, Long term.

I'm 18 and I have really important exam(college entrance exam) for less than six months from now. Since its the biggest thing in my life for now and it's start of adulthood, I decided to finally change my habits and life. After a lot of failures and frustration, I think this time it's gonna work out. Also your video really inspired me.
P.S: I gonna write the update after exam.

I wanna change my life in a year. The last couple of years I've been living the same year over and over again. Nothing has changed. I've been dealing with depression since 2019 and now I'm getting a lot better because I decided to change myself this 2021. I took a lot of different medications and none of them helped me overcome this sickness. Cycling has helped me though, and I'm feeling a lot better now, I don't feel depressed anymore and even my psychiatrist told me that I don't look nor feel depressed. I also overcame porn this year. I feel that I'm changing and this 2022 I wanna change even more. I don't wanna change who I am, a shy and quiet man, I wanna break the habit and feel better, live the life I've always wanted to live. Good luck everyone!

For me momentum is the best thing. If you plan to do exercise daily just do 1/10th of it. Want to do 100 push ups. Make sure you do atleast 10 . As soon as you do 10 you will do more. This really works for me.

I love and hate the truth in this. The process (vs goal) focus bit really rang some bells. Such a good way to describe why goal focus misleads us. Your content has been a welcome feature for over a year now; here's to one more, and by the end of next I'd like to resonate more practically with more of these changes. Cheers!

I have strong will and I did things for the last 4 years that I hated in my core. I don't recommend doing stuff you hate for a long time.
    But ,
I do the work every day and I learned a lot about how far I can push myself. So this video comes in clutch at this time for me. This year its going to be great to shift the focus on something enjoyable.
    - Thanks and also ,
    Greetings from July 2046.

Second time I watched this. Very helpful, thanks a lot. Already have a list of things to focus on, one at a time.. i found exercise to be the best starting point for this sort of approach. A stronger body and better shape motivates me to improve other aspects of my life and acts as an anchor when the urge to procrastinate may steer you off. I did a very simple 30 day yoga challenge on youtube, which has evolved into a daily habit that now involves other forms of exercise (pilates, bands, breathwork and meditation), too. Once i saw that i am capable of creating a new habit, it got me excited about all the possibilities. Having a plan (even a simple list with dates) and keeping some sort of journal (can be voice or video recordings or even a selfie of yourself everyday) helps to stay on track and monitor progress, too.
