    I've had the privilege of sitting in the engineer's seat of this locomotive and it is massive for sure. Not real good visibility looking through the windows either.
    They say this locomotive pulled the freedom train through Texas but the first time I saw this locomotive at the TSRR I immediately recognized it as the locomotive that pulled the freedom train to Mobile, AL where I live.

    The texas & pacific was the first railroad to ever aquire the 2-10-4 and they got the right of way to name it, so they called it the texas type, therefore atsf and the other railroads acquired 2-10-4's after the T&P

      610 would need MORE than new tubes ultra sound of the boiler etc. she needs for sure a new pilot truck because her original pilot wheels were worn BEYOND their maximum use. Especially on curvatures and bends. She also needs firebox sheet work as well. Trailing trucks also need question marks on whether to repair or replace them. My personal opinion, the name is all caps WLLIAM S PURDY because he was at the throttle of the 610 in the late 1970s .

  • @trainknut
    @trainknut Před 4 lety +12

    All things considered, she's in a lot better state than I would have expected... Considering how they can just move her at will without needing to remove the connecting rods or piston caps.
    Personally I'd love to see either 610 or ATSF 5000 return to steam, we really need a nice ten-coupled excursion star back on the rails.

      @Connor Lee It's sad because there's really nothing like them running at the moment, they really were beasts. The closest we have is 4014 and even she's a dual service engine.

    • @trainknut
      @trainknut Před 3 lety +1

      @Connor Lee 3985 is more than "out right now" they've straight up said they've basically retired her.
      As for stability, I'm not sure how true that is, the immense weight of big steam locomotives generally negates any unstable characteristics, however that immense weight also limits where they can be run, because heavy locomotives need heavy rails and well maintained right of way, otherwise they'll completely shred the tracks with their piston strokes.

    I would love to see this thing brought back to life... Unfortunately, the railroad on which it resides makes it impossible to turn it around. Also, something about the trailing trucks being prone to running ground when backing up. Other issues also come up, some which I can't quite explain... But at least it survives and is stored in an excellent facility.

  • @ralfie8801

    So after showing the video of it coming home under steam, how come you didn't even mention that it went back home to Ft. Worth for a period of a few years before it went to Palestine? Probably half of your video, most of the video you showed of 610 under steam was shot at the old Federal Quartermaster Depot in Ft. Worth where the engine originally came home to. The building you showed it steaming into was its first indoor storage in Ft. Worth. That building has either been expanded or completely replaced by the City of Ft. Worth and now serves as their city garage, it's off of James Ave. in South Ft. Worth.
    Edit: I'm old enough to remember 610 sitting outside the Will Rogers Exhibition center when I was a kid. It was sitting on tracks that were still connected to two different railroads at the time, they were used to transport the livestock to the Fat Stock Show back in the day, but were long unused by the time I can remember them.

    • @ralfie8801
      @ralfie8801 Před 2 lety

      It's at the old Federal Quartermaster Depot in Ft. Worth, Texas. Unfortunately no, it was disconnected from both railroads that served it about 30 years ago, and I think the tracks have all been removed now. It was served by ATSF and MKT.
      You can find it on google maps by looking at south Ft. Worth between James Ave. and Hemphill Street a little north of Loop 820. The building they were moving it into was either expanded or completely replaced with a larger one and is now the Ft. Worth City Garage on the map.

    Why won’t they restore no.610? Is it because they need to raise funds or they just want to keep it unrestored

    • @LouisianaRailProductions
      @LouisianaRailProductions  Před 2 lety

      Lot more to it than that. While a restoration of 610 would need tons of money, the track at TSR would need an overhaul due to its size. Also from what I was told, it simply wouldn’t be profitable at the time. Not without running 25 car trains daily.

      Another reason it may not leave its current home in Palestine, Texas is because Union Pacific apparently has a policy in which only steam locomotives from their heritage fleet can operate on that railroad's tracks.
